Satisfactory Films (Excluding Animated)

  1. maymayasahan
  2. Maymay

This is a list of must-see films in my opinion. They are those who got 3 1/2 stars or more.

These are listed in no specific order.

NOTE: I may have forgotten to include some. And another thing, I did not include animated films. Don't get me wrong though. Numerous animated films are brilliant and are products of genius storytelling. It's just that I would surely forget to include a number of them because I've seen a lot since my childhood- the time when I wasn't aware of this whole Flixster stuff. I didn't include short films short films as well.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory 2005,  PG)
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
"Charlie Bucket was the luckiest boy in the entire world. He just didn't know it yet."

Another Tim Burton masterpiece. I really adore the way Burton handles films. This is a pretty good story about wishes, pleasure and family. The cast was amazing, especially Johnny Depp. He surely gave a splendid performance. Freddie Highmore was did pretty nice, too. The other kids were also good. All of the characters acted so well. I loved everything about it. The only thing I wasn't fond of was the song numbers of the Oompa-Loompas. The story was one of the best ever told.

"Life had never been sweeter."

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl 2003,  PG-13)
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
"Over 3000 islands of paradise - for some it's a blessing - for others... it's a curse."

A really good film to jumpstart the world-renowned trilogy. It has a very enjoyable and charming story. This was filled with breathtaking and action-packed scenes. But, the two things to be commended most are the magnificent special effects and the ever-extraordinary Johnny Depp. They raised the film to its peak.

It's a film everybody would surely enjoy. A good selection for the family. The best choice for some bonding time with your buddies. An ideal film for the kids, and even those who are young-at-heart.

It's just so fun and cool that anybody to see this film could surely absorb it. The awesome effects and Depp saved this film from sinking to the bottom of the Caribbean waters.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End 2007,  PG-13)
Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End
The first part where the pirates and suspected pirates are captured by the government and are denied of their rights such as habeas corpus was, perhaps, my favorite scene. It was the scene were they were singing the Pirate Song in a creepy tune and voice.

Not bad, and I like the ending. Still action-filled, loaded with breathtaking scenes and good humor. Captain Jack Sparrow was one of the coolest guys on the silver screen. I really like him, like how he's liked and adored by the rest of the crazy and fun people on earth. After seeing the trilogy, it's no wonder I wanted to try to be a pirate as cool as Captain Jack.

Edward Scissorhands 1990,  PG-13)
Edward Scissorhands
"His scars run deep."

A highly superb and deeply touching film about a "man-made man" who was never complete. Actually, his story starts when a scientist with a superior and inventive mind decided to create a man. He taught him all the things he needed to know, he taught him how to become human. Unfortunately, when the day came when the inventor finally finished the hands he made for his invention, he died leaving the poor creature with his scissorhands. He stayed up there in the castle for so long until the Avon lady came.

The rest of the story were fame, mishaps, heartbreaks, disdain and most importantly, love. My favorite line would be "Because you asked me to." It is up to you to discover the story behind it. All I can say is that it clearly showed how much Edward loved Kim.

It is surely one of Tim Burton's best and his first film with Johnny Depp. Personally, I really admire the inventor. He never failed to give Edward his most important part, his heart. A heart so big that he's always able and willing to contain all the hurts for the sake of love.
5
Secret Window 2004,  PG-13)
Secret Window
"The most important part of a story is the ending."

I admire the story of Stephen King. This was really interesting for me. It has the right dose of suspense. But, I'm not so sure if it was good or not. It is so true that its most important part is the ending. Its ending redeemed the whole film. This film made me fear Johnny Depp for a moment. I loved it.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street 2007,  R)
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
"Never forget. Never forgive."

It's time for paybacks. Behind this dark, morbid film, lies the beauty within. A tragic yet gripping story of a man who did nothing but to love. Very good portrayal of characters, good direction and the best ending. A film I'll surely remember for all of my life.

Surely, this is another film to celebrate from the master director Tim Burton. The actors were splendid, especially Johnny Depp. The music was also good. In addition, it also features jaw-dropping set, well-done costumes and gripping cinematography.

Revenge. Perhaps, that's the most evident matter of the film. But for me, there's something deeper and greater than this- love. The only reason why everything happened, why they did what's seemingly wrong, why they gave all that they can is because they love.

Right after seeing this, I thought it has no moral lesson after all the blood, deaths, revenge, anger, rage. However, I was wrong. It implies that it may seem that the whole world turned its back on you. That nobody cares. That they took everything dear to you. Despite all of these, never ever let revenge consume you. For if you do, you'll surely regret the time when the wrongs you've done asks for its cost.

Finding Neverland 2004,  PG)
Finding Neverland
"How far can your imagination take you?"

When the acclaimed playwright Sir James Matthew Barry was beginning to lose is touch, a family came into his life. It may seem wrong, but Barry loved the widowed Sylvia Llewelyn Davies and her children. He became quite close with the family which is frowned upon by some people in their lives especially of Sylvia's mother and occasionally, Peter.

This film opens the story of how the world-famous classic, Peter Pan, came to life. It was really beautiful and touching. Superb performances from Kate Winslet, Freddie Highmore and Johnny Depp. It was really moving especially for Barry. He just loved. But in the end, he lost his wife, his new-found family and the love of his life.

Sylvia and James were like Peter and Wendy. They were in each other's company for a while, the greatest times of their lives. But, the truth is they're never meant to be together.

Chocolat 2000,  PG-13)
Chocolat
"What do you see?"

A beautiful film about a very conservative little town locked up in its tradition and stiff beliefs and is fully-controlled by its firm mayor and all his care about "morality". But is his concept of "morality" the best and right for all? Or is this just to keep traditions that are meant to be modified for good? These changed because of the inhabitance of a single mother and her daughter not under the mayor's power. She loves making chocolates and these sweets are forbidden as form of abstinence for the coming holy week. This movie shows a person making a difference, which is first frowned upon by the society because of those silly beliefs that locked them up into something they're not happy with. It was deeply moving. Even Vianne let her life be changed. Though the North Wind blew, she stayed. It's all about changes. Changes to make things better.

What's Eating Gilbert Grape 1993,  PG-13)
What's Eating Gilbert Grape
"A story about the love you find...in the last place you look."

My first remark: It's totally underrated! This one was a masterpiece. I'm really glad I watched this. The story was profoundly moving and heartbreaking. A story of romantic love, unconditional love, family, imperfections, challenges and the process of making it through.

What's eating Gilbert Grape? Here's what's eating him. He has to be the one to be in charge of the family after his father's death. He earns pretty small in the slowly dying convenience store. He has this overly obese mother. And he has to take care of his mentally ill younger brother, Arnie. That was before, though. The new thing eating him up is that the free spirited Becky and her grandmother arrives in town and makes him fall in love. When Gilbert tries to slightly shift his focus on his personal life, things get worse.

The bond between Arnie and Gilbert is more of unbreakable. That beyond the quarrels, reprimands of the older, misunderstandings and weary, they're meant to stick to each other through thick and thin. That nothing in this world can separate them. That Arnie, despite being unwell mentally, is sure of one thing: nobody in the world can love him more than Gilbert.

Johnny Depp was okay. But, I don't feel the chemistry between him and Juliette Lewis. Leonardo DiCaprio was extremely outstanding. Early signs of being a superstar. The story captured my soul. Good direction.

If you watch this and you didn't even feel a thing, you surely are heartless. Try to see this film and be moved by the Grape brothers.
10
Catch Me If You Can 2002,  PG-13)
Catch Me If You Can
If you see this movie, I assure you one thing: it will surely make you smile. It was fun and smart. Imagine presenting a biopic which turned out to be very unique and never boring. Excellent job for Mr. Spielberg. The story was really exceptional. Frank Abagnale is someone, whether you like it or not, you'll surely remember for such a long time. Thanks to the magnificent portrayal of Leonardo DiCaprio. He has enormous talent. Amazing. Tom Hanks was good, too. But obviously, he's outdone by DiCaprio. The character Abagnale, I must say, is a risky role which needs a gifted performer. DiCaprio is a perfect choice.

Abagnale is a really interesting man. He's really cool and he rocks. He makes me smile once in a while. He's got the personality, he's got the wits. I really believe that he's worth admiring. It's just that he used everything stored in mind in a not-so-good way. Everything he does makes him even more exciting. Every duplication he executes makes you engross yourself into the movie further.

Carl Hanratty (Hanks) was once said, "Sometimes, it's easier livin' the lie." Clearly a direct remark for Abagnale. You see, he and his family faced financial problems. Actually, he discovered this "talent" when he moved to public school and pretended as their professor. And the rest, he did flawlessly well. A doctor, pilot, lawyer and he even dressed up in a James Bond guise. Not only with fake tickets and checks, he's also good with girls. But the moment he actually fell in love, you'll never guess what happened. And I don't want to spoil that for you. Better check it out.

He tricked almost the whole country and gained millions of dollars before he even got 19. But you see, he's not bad. He just wanted to have a taste of a better life. A better life for his mother, for himself and for his beloved father. Yes, there are times that lying is the easy way out. That sometimes it feels a lot better to live in your fantasies instead of facing the harsh reality. But, as the world-famous quote said, the truth will set you free. Frank Abagnale may be a fake, but I assure you that he's someone a whole lot more.
11
Forrest Gump 1994,  PG-13)
Forrest Gump
Forrest Gump. Clearly, he has a very low IQ and it would be very much appropriate to remark that he is a complete idiot. But, I think a kinder and still proper description of him in my point of view is that he is a man of innocence. He has gone through a lot in his life. He was bullied at school. He met the girl of his dreams and her only friend as a child. There are times when he had her, and often she's gone. He gained and lost things along the way. But, what he retained until the end is his innocence. This innocence made him a laughingstock of the world, but, this is also what made his life extremely extraordinary.

Wonderful direction from Robert Zemeckis who has made the adaptation of a story full of facts from history twisted to create Forrest Gump, producing a moving and interesting film until the very last scene. Good set of actors and of course, the outstanding Tom Hanks. The story was really unforgettable and filled with valuable life lessons.

This is a movie where you'll get the perfect amount of drama, comedy and romance. And I tell you, Forrest is not stupid as his mother believed so. The world is stupid. They struggle to do things, even ruining others, to achieve their ambitions and as presented in the film through some characters, they end up losing. And where's Forrest? He's there seeing the world with pure simplicity and innocence.

Saving Private Ryan 1998,  R)
Saving Private Ryan
One of the greatest war movies ever made. Director Steven Spielberg has done another WWII masterpiece and it was a stunning success. It surely is a heartbreak seeing this wonderful work be nominated the Best Picture, and remain a nomination in the Academy forever. The movie is filled with overflowing emotion, adversity and difficulty. It surely isn't a film to watch with family and eat popcorn.

A moving screenplay, effective acting, flawless direction, and the emotional and distressing intensity of the film itself brought me into a world not completely understood and grasped by most of us. Spielberg not only let the viewers see the film, he made them to feel like being in it.

It brings the story of a special unit of eight soldiers led by Capt. John Miller brilliantly portrayed by Hanks to rescue the only surviving soldier of the three Ryan brothers, Private James Francis Ryan (Damon). The eight, who eventually had a strong bond among themselves, were put into an extremely dangerous mission where they lose each other along the way. Miller is very admirable here. You see, he has this burden to appear strong and unmoved to his men who are losing the faith and wanted to abort the order while in his inmost self, he feels vulnerable.

This movie shows how precious life is and how duty, honor and service of country are very much glorified during such times. And that sometimes, these things valued could risk your life into something you may not fully believe in.
13
The Terminal 2004,  PG-13)
The Terminal
Viktor Navorski lives in an airport. Yes, after literally losing his country while on flight, he finds himself stuck in the JFK airport. Frank Dixon, the head, thought that if he leaves Navorski there, he would eventually escape to New York and become someone else's problem. But, he was wrong. Navorski is an honest man and will be waiting until he's free to leave.

It got good shots of comedy, drama and romance. The Hanks and Zeta-Jones team-up is good addition to the story, not misleading the film to its real purpose. It's a Spielberg work and it's a really funny and light movie, with the right doses of sentiments in some scenes. It may not be as big and celebrated as the other Hanks-Spielberg collaborations such as the funny and humorous Catch Me If You Can or as groundbreaking as Saving Private Ryan, but, it's still a movie that captivated me a lot.

Tom Hanks was really believable and fascinating. The colorful people around also alleviated the film. Many movies are vying to be groundbreaking, rare, notable and revolutionary. Those are the kind of movies we usually set our eyes on. Yet sometimes, we just want to lay back and feel good, so we go see The Terminal.
14
The Green Mile 1999,  R)
The Green Mile
Perhaps the best movie adaptation from a Stephen King novel ever. The production staff and the cast made another piece of art. The movie is heavy for me. It's not something wherein you could possibly relax wile watching. The lives of every character, little or great, were remarkable. Tom Hanks is always great. Michael Clarke Duncan surely deserves the Oscar nod.

Really interesting and never dull. There are times that miracles happen in the places we never thought of and with the persons we least expected.
15
Cast Away 2000,  PG-13)
Cast Away
What an interesting movie with a valuable story. When I was younger, I tried to watch it and I was killed by boredom for the first ten minutes. And after seeing it, being old enough to soak myself into the fine details, I was impressed. At first I thought that a film that will be handed over to a single actor during most of its running time is quite a risk. But now, I'm pretty sure they just made a stunning work and certainly never regret to have Tom Hanks do the job. He was really convincing. I pretty much loved the film. Occasionally funny. And by the way, I also loved Wilson.
16
You've Got Mail 1998,  PG)
You've Got Mail
It's more of a typical American chick flick, and yet, a lot better than average. It's extremely better than expected. I thought it's just another "boy meets girl" kind of thing. It's something more, of course with a good set of actors like Hanks and Ryan. A perfect choice if all you wanted is to find contentment, be happy, feel good, and fall in love.
17
Road to Perdition 2002,  R)
Road to Perdition
It shows that beyond crime, murder, sins, betrayal and death, a father's love will always prevail. And for a gangster film, this one's a tearjerker. The right mix of action and drama. A film I'll surely treasure for a lifetime.

Highly remarkable and magnificent film with a moving and poignant story within. Tyler Hoechlin and Tom Hanks were great and they perfectly complemented each other. Paul Newman was remarkable. I also think that Jude Law is noteworthy. It was brilliantly acted. The cinematography and sound editing, flawless. The setting perfectly fitted the movie. Good direction as well.

Michael Sullivan. Was he a bad man? Did he die a good man? We all have different views about that. But, one thing's for sure. The ending clearly proves Michael Sullivan's undying fatherly love.
18
Apollo 13 1995,  PG)
Apollo 13
A true-to-life story of a mission that failed but produced better men. The actors were good. The direction was fine. The effects were marvelous. Pretty enjoyable and thrilling film. From the moment they encountered problems, I was really nervous as if I'm with them. But, before they went on their journey, it was kind of slow and boring. Overall, good film to see.
19
Philadelphia 1993,  PG-13)
Philadelphia
The movie throws us into a world of pain and prejudice. It was the best gay film I've ever seen (actually, the best out of two but I'm pretty sure it's one of the best out there). A heavy emotional drive even though you're not gay and you don't have AIDS. Tom Hanks was such a convincing and talented actor. I really look up to him especially in the scene where he said that he likes opera songs and actually sung with overflowing emotion and heartache. Banderas was also an effective one. Though he and Hanks never did something intimate, you could somehow feel the love they share. A very timely film during that period when AIDS was disdained instead of being cured, and when gays have no place in the society.

A really important film for those with that illness without cure and most especially for those unaccepted, judged, hopeless and downhearted.

Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events 2004,  PG)
Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events
Ain't like any other. Good cast and wonderful story. Jim Carrey is a really good actor, and he has proven it many times. For me, it is almost like a "Tim Burton" film, only a little brighter. I surely loved its dark ambiance in the wide world of fantasies. And I will always adore the good looks of Liam Aiken whom I've known through this amazing film.
21
Titanic (in 3D) 2012,  PG-13)
Titanic (in 3D)
This is a really beautiful film. It won't be forgotten for such a long time, maybe forever. The cast was really good. The effects were awesome. The story is beautiful and romantic, and touching. The death of every person on the ship is heartbreaking, especially when there's a mother telling a story to her children at some point near the end. After all the feats of this legend, James Cameron surely is the king of the world.
22
The Notebook 2004,  PG-13)
The Notebook
The story was beautiful and deeply touching. However, the movie itself was not as good. I find the body somehow weak. It all started with summer love, and ended up as forever. Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams were good. The ending surely did pierce my heart.
23
Gladiator 2000,  R)
Gladiator
I loved this epic. This is another big thing. The effects were good. The actors were convincing. Russel Crowe was superb. He did very well in this movie. This film showed not only the cruelty Maximus and his family faced due to jealousy and envy, but also the tough lives of the slaves-turned-gladiators during the reign of the Roman Empire. Though it's almost three hours, I didn't feel the time because of the finely created craft.
24
Life Is Beautiful (La Vita è bella) 1997,  PG-13)
Life Is Beautiful (La Vita è bella)
A beautiful masterpiece about the Second World War from a slightly different point of view. It presents a fable filled with imagination, courage, hope and love in the dark and harsh reality of the war.

The story was exceptional and so were the actors. Roberto Benigni was really convincing and even more superb thinking that he also directed the film. In less than two hours, it was able to show the terrors the Jews had to suffer at war, the radiant and tender Juliet-and-Romeo-like romance between a despised Jew and a well-heeled Italian, the enduring faith and hope of a mother, and the undying and unconditional love a father could ever give.

Actually, this film's a school project. So, I didn't intend to watch it. It was already late at night when I viewed it because it had to be passed the next day. I was really sleepy and I was sure that this film is boring. I found it somehow boring during the first few minutes, but the rest was marvel. It was really creative, moving and inspiring. I must say that it is a tear-jerking historical tale that will surely leave a mark on your heart.

Beyond the condemnation, beyond the war, beyond all the burdens, beyond death, comes the unconquerable power of faith, imagination, courage and love. This is no less than one of the finest films ever made.
25
The Phantom of the Opera 2005,  PG-13)
The Phantom of the Opera
This musical is certainly a masterpiece. I wonder why many critics didn't like it much. The story and the music was great, as well as the cast. I fell in love with the film, the characters and with the music of the night.

I could never blame the people to fear the Phantom. He's really dark and mysterious, and he murders. But, it is a crime to loathe him. Actually, he's a very accomplished man with pure talent. But, all because of the disfigured face, nobody loved him. You can never blame him for all his evil deeds because it was the society that turned him into a monster. All his life he was disliked. It's quite wrong to ask him for compassion when he himself didn't feel any.

The Phantom's wasted heart all just for loving Christine broke my heart as well. I really admire him as the film reached its ending. If there's one thing that's certain, his love for Christine was pure, true and unconditional.

The Passion of the Christ 2004,  R)
The Passion of the Christ
One of the most heart-wrenching films I've ever seen. Very beautiful cinematography and superb actors. Just beautiful.
27
Dead Poets Society 1989,  PG)
Dead Poets Society
A very astonishing film. Everything was great. The story, the cast, how the film was carried out, everything. Robin Williams did a really good job and so did the other characters. I fell in love with this film and I'll never fall out of love. This is a very inspiring film and one of the most unforgettable movies I've ever seen. This is a certified must-see and undoubtedly a masterpiece.

A heartwarming and moving film. Angelina Jolie is very remarkable here. A really, really beautiful movie. A must-see.
30
Atonement 2007,  R)
Atonement
Atonement is such a marvel. The movie is really beautiful. The screenplay was excellent and a bunch of terrific actors. Just because of a false accusation, the lives of Robby, Briony and Cecilia were drastically changed. The ending was one of the best I've ever seen.
31
Seven Pounds 2008,  PG-13)
Seven Pounds
What a remarkable Will Smith we've got here. The story is good and moving. Remarkable.
32
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button 2008,  PG-13)
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Really nice. A very promising movie. Somewhat similar to Forrest Gump for all the adventures Benjamin has gotten himself into. I really liked the idea of this film. This is a sad film. This shows a very peculiar story of a man who's never meant to be with anybody.
33
The Great Debaters 2007,  PG-13)
The Great Debaters
Nice movie though the ending was predictable. The cast was great. I loved the story. My favorite debater would be Henry Lowe. This is a film where you'll get a lot of stuff. A movie that battles discrimination. Really wonderful.

A great fantasy film from promising young actors. Well done.

36
Iron Man 2008,  PG-13)
Iron Man
This film is awesome. A very good action film, and an unusual but great superhero film. It is true, heroes aren't born. They are built. Robert Downey Jr. is such a remarkable actor. This is one hell of a ride.
37
The Incredible Hulk 2008,  PG-13)
The Incredible Hulk
I liked this a lot better than the other earlier version. This has a better story, better special effects and a lot better ending. Another thing great about this is the very excellent actor, Edward Norton. It is one great action film that will satisfy its audience with breathtaking and action-packed scenes.
38
Spider-Man 2002,  PG-13)
Spider-Man
A great comic-book-superhero-story-turned-movie. Fun, sentiments, drama, friendship, action and romance all packed in one. If I'm not mistaken, this movie led superhero flicks into being massive hits. A thrilling and exciting feast for the eyes, and a touching and moving tale for the heart.
39
Spider-Man 3 2007,  PG-13)
Spider-Man 3
This is my favorite Spider-Man movie. Toby Maguire did a very good job here, especially when portraying the darker side of himself. Really cool! Makes people demand a sequel. We all love Spider-man.
40
Spider-Man 2 2004,  PG-13)
Spider-Man 2
It still lives up to the expectations, being a Spider-man sequel. I don't agree with the many that this is the best sequel. The weakest for me in terms of the story. Still, simply amazing.

Oliver Twist
It has a nice story, as well as the film. Really touching and moving. I loved its dark theme. A real classic.
44
Inkheart 2008,  PG)
Inkheart
I find it imaginative and wonderful. The effects were great, the costumes, the cast. They were good enough. I heard the producers wanted a bigger actor here, but the author of the book where the film was based wanted Brendan Fraser for this. Well, she was never wrong for choosing him.
45
I Am Sam 2001,  PG-13)
I Am Sam
It was really nice. It was a very heartwarming film. Sean Penn was worth to be nominated best actor. He did a really good job. Dakota Fanning was also good. I loved its story. It was moving, but not the best ending.
46
Jerry Maguire 1996,  R)
Jerry Maguire
I guess I enjoyed this film. Tom Cruise did a very good job, for which he was nominated for best actor. Cuba Gooding Jr. is also good. This film has a good story. This is a very good film to see. It shows that despite the mishaps and breakdowns, it's better to keep our hopes up. There might be something better waiting to happen.
47
Shakespeare in Love 1998,  R)
Shakespeare in Love
This is very beautiful. A very romantic period film. This is worthy enough to win Best Picture, though I liked Saving Private Ryan a lot more. The cast was also amazing. The story, oh its story is just great! The costumes, neat. The ending, unpredictable and brilliant.
48
Frost/Nixon 2008,  R)
Frost/Nixon
Indeed, a sophisticated film. It is worth to be nominated Best Picture in Academy Awards. Refined actors and heavy dialogues.
49
Juno 2007,  PG-13)
Juno
I changed my former review about this film. At first, I didn't like it much. I thought it was just another typical American film that was lucky to be in an Oscars awards night. But sometimes I think about it over and over again. If it isn't good enough, then why does it enter my mind frequently? Maybe I was wrong. It deserves its seat in the Oscars awards night. It is not just any other film. It is a good coming-of-age, modern-day film.
50
Nim's Island 2008,  PG)
Nim's Island
This is a perfect family film. The story was very good and unique. Gerard Butler, Jodie Foster and Abigail Breslin were all wonderful performers. I also liked the "Alex Rover" thingy.

American Beauty
I didn't appreciate it at first. I just thought that it was too liberal. But behind every scene, behind every moment, we just need to... look closer.
52
Poseidon 2006,  PG-13)
Poseidon
I forgot to rate this before. For me, this isn't a bad film. I liked it, and it made my heart beat faster than usual. There's the feeling of being nervous. This is intense. Imagine their struggle in order to survive. The deaths of some of them along the way were devastating. Powerful ending.
53
The Pursuit of Happyness 2006,  PG-13)
The Pursuit of Happyness
This is a very inspiring and touching film. A very good performance by Will Smith. Definitely a must-see.
54
War of the Worlds 2005,  PG-13)
War of the Worlds
It is far from what I expected, but it is still good. Having Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning here is a good idea, since both of them are good performers. Justin Chatwin is also good enough. I'm not that into sci-fi films, but this is a good one. I was never bored watching it, because there are sci-fi films that seems boring for me. The best thing about this film is its special effects; all of which are great. Another thing making this film great is having it seen from the point of view of a usual American family struggling for survival. But amidst those, it is not one of Steven Speilberg's best. But there is no doubt that the critics would like it, and there is also no doubt that the ordinary viewers won't like it that much. I think it's because it lacks emotional connection and it's more of technical.

Valkyrie 2008,  PG-13)
Valkyrie
This is a good World War 2 film, having it viewed from the German soldiers' side, soldiers who realized that Hitler is being such an evil leader. They stood for what they believed is right. Usually, World War 2 films are all about American soldiers at war or victims being shown to suffer from the cruelty of Germany led by Hitler. It is good that this movie stood on the different side of the story, but retaining the human dignity to stand up for justice and for the welfare of their beloved country. This is a very good film that surely thrilled its viewers without so much action-filled scenes. There is a bunch of great actors here. This is a good film to see.

The Reader 2008,  R)
The Reader
The story was beautiful and heartfelt. I loved the story, and even the ending. I loved the way the story evolved. The actors were also pretty good. David Kross was really professional, after everything I've seen. Kate Winslet once again proved to be an accomplished actress. There may have been explicit scenes but I find them necessary for the film.
57
The Duchess 2008,  PG-13)
The Duchess
It is a beautiful period film. Keira Knigtley did a wonderful job. A good film about the tragic yet beautiful life of a woman in the earlier times.
58
The Dark Knight 2008,  PG-13)
The Dark Knight
About awesome special effects, action-packed scenes, brilliant set and costumes, and a bunch of amazing actors, there's no question at all. All of those were supplied greatly by this film. While watching, I don't find the beginning and some parts in the middle that good. I thought they were way down below my expectations, after hearing a lot of good things about this film. But as it gets to its end, things were becoming a lot awesome. The actors, all great. Christian Bale was unquestionably a very good actor. And as for Heath Ledger, he was extremely outstanding. He deserves every recognition he got from doing the role of The Joker, from the smallest recognition up to the Oscars trophy. Bruce Wayne, or Batman, is a lot more than a hero. He may be the one of the most noble characters ever seen on the big screen. The ending was also really wise and great. The concept was also great. Its concept, "dark knight", is really amazing. This superhero film have done way more than what I expected. It's true that a true genius doesn't live up to expectations because a true genius shatters them. And every one involved in this film are all geniuses. Almost everybody, from ordinary viewers to movie critics, admired this film and I would never wonder why. This may be one of the best and most unforgettable superhero movies I've seen.

Mission Impossible 1996,  PG-13)
Mission Impossible
This film can be regarded as a good classic action movie. Its story is not that deep and interesting. It seems to be just like any typical action film. Still, the story was quite satisfying and the film is worth-watching. The director is quite good. The effects were not great, including the blood stuff, but all of which are understandable because this was made in 1996. But those are tolerable for me. Well, I liked the disguise of Ethan Hunt (Cruise). Tom Cruise dignified his character pretty well. And the scenes, they were excellently thrilling. I'm looking forward to see its sequel. All in all, it's pretty neat.
60
Angels & Demons 2009,  PG-13)
Angels & Demons
It is a lot like Da Vinci Code, of course. The plot is very much similar, a man got killed and Prof. Langdon called for help then it would turn out that it has something to do with the Catholic Church. But it is a thousand times better! This is a great Dan Brown fictional novel turned to another Ron Howard masterpiece. This really is a good film to see. Tom Hanks did good, as he always does. Ewan McGregor was great and very convincing. Again, just as Da Vinci Code, Dan Brown touched a very sensitive aspect. But what the heck, it's merely fictional. The problem about those is that they bring confusion to some. I hope those who have seen The Da Vinci Code and this that doubted their faith come to their senses. Though controversial, but not as controversial as Da Vinci Code, this is a good film to see. Films like this are meant to remain on the big screen, and not to go through breaking our faith. I strongly suggest for this film to be seen, but keep in mind that this is merely fiction.
61
The Island 2005,  PG-13)
The Island
This is one good futuristic and sci-fi film. The set, special effects, oh gosh. They were all jaw-dropping. I loved the cast, especially Ewan McGregor. Ewan and Scarlett look good together. And its story, it is a powerful one. This movie is a nice piece of art! I liked the chase scenes, the concept, everything. Though action-packed and thrilling, it retained its neat story. This is a film where you'll get both fine story and brilliant scenes. I was never bored watching this. Everybody should see this. I know that for many it is not that good, but for me it is good enough.
62
Mission: Impossible III 2006,  PG-13)
Mission: Impossible III
It seems to be the best of all the Mission Impossible films. It got good action scenes, awesome thrilling events and brilliant special effects. Tom Cruise did well in this movie. This is the most intense and thrilling installment. This is an excellent classic action film.
63
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone 2001,  PG)
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
This film is definitely magical! Well, I mean it rhetorically. Though it would also work even if I mean it literally. Fantasy may be one of the best movie genres ever. Now I know why almost the whole world is crazy about this. This film is great! Every second of it is enchanting, though some effects were quite laughable. I spent 14 years of my life without seeing this masterpiece. Where have I been all my life? I'm glad I had the chance to watch this. I would love to see all the other Harry Potter films.
64
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets 2002,  PG)
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Another impressive film. I just love fantasy films. I think they are intelligent, given enough effort and amazingly brilliant. Going back to Chamber of Secrets, it is awesome just like the first one. Technically, I think this one has improved far better than Sorcerer's Stone. But in terms of its emotional connection, both are great. I also loved the twists, both here and the first film. But the twists in this installment, I think, are greater than the first. But I don't like the appearance of the basilisk though it only appeared for a few minutes. This one gave a little more intense and thrilling scenes than the first one, but I love them both. Amidst all that, I personally think that the first installment is more remarkable. They're both unquestionably remarkable because they're both excellently made but I just think that the first one's more remarkable.
65
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban 2004,  PG)
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
This is so much better than the first two. Everything was undoubtedly great! This film is flawless. I loved everything about it. It's amazing. It has improved a lot. Every little thing from start to finish are far off better than the first two. The first two were brilliant, but this is much more. I never knew that I'd live to see this. I don't know what else to say. I'm deeply impressed by this film. Words will never be enough to express its brilliance. A great evolution of story. Better characters and storyline.
66
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire 2005,  PG-13)
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
No wonder, another Harry Potter masterpiece. I think, since I haven't watched all, Harry Potter films are truly nice works of art. While I'm watching it, I think I had the same kind of feeling while watching the Chamber of Secrets. But this has a lot better special effects. Like the past three installments, this is another one I admired. Fantasy films are just brilliant. But, my least liked among the HP films.
67
Moulin Rouge! 2001,  PG-13)
Moulin Rouge!
It was a very beautiful musical. For me, it's one of the best. I liked the music, admired the cast, adored the set and fell in love with its story. The set was definitely great. No wonder it had its Oscars for the set design and costumes. I love seeing such set designs. The story was quite alike with Shakespeare in Love. As for the story, it's not the typical love story often seen. It was like a fairytale in reality. It's the occurence of love in an unlikely place. It's the expression of love in the purest way in a place never so pure. This film shows how powerful love is. The ending was quite good. "The greatest thing you'll ever learn is to love and be loved in return."
68
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull 2008,  PG-13)
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
I forgot to rate this before. Since this is the first and only Indiana Jones I've watched so far, I don't know if this one improved. As I see it, there's thrill, action, humor and little bit magic all packed in a single film. This is never a bad film to see. It's worth the time.
69
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix 2007,  PG-13)
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
I think this is the best Harry Potter film so far. It is the most polished film, but we're yet to see the later installments. It's also the most emotional film, which is good. It's quite different from the first five, maybe because it freed itself of the drastic twists. It's a good thing they loosened the film up of the shocking twists, for a change. Change is not bad. But the twists were nice, though. Still, the HP film I like most is the Prizoner of Azkaban. No wonder, HP movies are getting a lot better.
70
Vanilla Sky 2001,  R)
Vanilla Sky
I don't know whether I liked it or not. I'm so confused about my reaction on this. It's like a not-so-good movie worth the time. I got a lot of headache because of this! But for me, of all the Tom Cruise films I've seen, this is his best performance yet. And he actually looked good with both Cameron Diaz and Penelope Cruz. I'm only sure of one thing, this is the film with the most drastic twists I've ever seen in my whole life.
71
Miracle at St. Anna 2008,  R)
Miracle at St. Anna
Overall, it was quite beautiful. The story is like "Life is Beautiful" and "Saving Private Ryan" combined, but never better than any of those two. What I don't like about this is that I didn't understand most of the dialogues, which are spoken in Italian. Yet, the final scenes were sad and beautiful. The film was also an interesting one, for the fact that I admire period and war films. The effects were not that good, knowing that it was released not so long ago. The film is very inspiring and soul-lifting. It is a nice film to see. It's just that it's so hard to watch a film wherein you never know what exactly they're talking about. The ending redeemed the whole film.
72
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring 2001,  PG-13)
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
It's a beautiful fantasy film. There is no doubt about that. I'll never question why the critics and ordinary viewers loved it. The viewing time is almost three hours, which is quite long. But all the three hours were well-spent, if you ask me. I admit that I got tired focusing my eyes on a film for three hours, but I'll never regret getting tired if I were to see a masterpiece. It's hard to put into words the magic shown by this movie. I'm so happy and fulfilled that I've already seen this. I'm glad I've already watched the beginning of the greatest trilogy to date.
73
Coraline 2009,  PG)
Coraline
I loved it. I loved everything about it! Dark-themed films are usually great. This may be the best animated film I've ever seen in my whole life. This is well-crafted and beautifully made. I really love it. I don't know how to put into words the greatness of such masterpiece. Henry Selick is a good director, almost like Tim Burton.
74
Apocalypto 2006,  R)
Apocalypto
It was, overall, a good film. The set and costumes were admirable. The actors were all good. Really good. They act very well. The direction is also okay, as well as the story. The film evolved beautifully. I didn't like the way the first few parts of the movie appeared on screen. Technically, the first few scenes seemed less than satisfying. I also felt bad about the special effects. Knowing that it was released in 2006, everything must look real. The body organs were obviously unreal. The jaguar, the tapir, some killings were obviously fake. There are movies released in the 90's which looked a lot better than this in terms of special effects.
75
Public Enemies 2009,  R)
Public Enemies
It's excellently made. Michael Mann got the skills. The actors, especially Depp, were all great. I loved the set and the outfits. It's not your ordinary action film. It's something deeper. And inspite of the intense scenes, it's a kind of action film that won't get you exhausted. It's a film most of the critics would undoubtedly applaud. The long months of waiting is finally over, and it's worth it.
76
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince 2009,  PG-13)
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
The film was great! Really beautiful. Perhaps the most beautiful installment so far aside from the Prisoner of Azkaban. Every little thing in this film is great. Though its being 3D only lasted for about 15 minutes, it's worth everything. The only thing not that good was when the Half-Blood Prince was revealed. They should have given more emphasis. Well, I don't have anything more to say. It just gets better and better. I can't wait to see Deathly Hollows.
77
Ghost 1990,  PG-13)
Ghost
This is a lot more beautiful and awesome than I expected! I never thought that a ghost story would be as great. I'm really happy I've seen this film. It has a good story, and good actors. I loved the film.
78
Broken Flowers 2005,  R)
Broken Flowers
A very deep film. The plot is really interesting. It's nice how his past was told through solving this "mystery" of being a father to a 19-year-old teenager. It just appears to a bit boring, and I didn't like any of his ex-girlfriends.
79
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind 2004,  R)
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind
Good film, with a beautiful screenplay. The actors were good. Very similar to Vanilla Sky. It's just so nice that there's a machine that can help you erase someone not worth to be remembered. When they realized that they got tired of each other and erased both of them in each one's memory, they started to know what they really mean to one another. I can really relate to it because there's a person who came and actually left. Sometimes, I wish this is real. It's sort of confusing so you better watch it, and it'll make you're time worthwhile.

Across the Universe 2007,  PG-13)
Across the Universe
From the greatest hits the world has ever heard from the rock band that made a name in history comes a magnificent musical that many could appreciate. Through combining Beatles songs, they were able to tell a story that could capture souls. Here is a love story between an English guy and an American girl, which was tested and strengthened by the circumstances of the war and personal principles they're willing to fight for. When I decided to watch this, it was a bit late in the evening and I feel kind of sleepy. But as the movie started, my lethargy slowly passed away. I love the songs. Undoubtedly, I would because it's from the music legends. I love the voices of the cast, all of which are great and blends well with each other. I like the acting and the story as well. But something surely remarkable in this film is that every depiction of a song is like a well-crafted music video. It's like a chain of music videos combined together to form such a masterpiece. I wonder why the critics didn't like it much. It's a film worth all the praises, just like the praises earned by the world-renowned band from which the songs came from.

A Beautiful Mind 2001,  PG-13)
A Beautiful Mind
Brilliant. Well-crafted. Stunning. Beautiful. The film was amazing! One of the best biopics ever. All the actors were great! Russell Crowe showed a really admirable and awesome performance. He truly deserves the Oscar nomination, and he should have won. All of his fellow performers were also great. Each made their characters remarkable. Ron Howard is such a magnificent director. The screenplay was also really beautiful. No wonder it bagged its Oscar. It was never boring for me though it seems that it is for some. It has a wonderful way of connecting to its audience. I really felt the sadness and adversities John Nash went through. I really love the film! It is an exceptional motion picture which shows that what matters most is not what is stuck inside your head, but the power you have in your heart. It is a film that grabbed me to the soul.

Amélie (Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain) 2001,  R)
Amélie (Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain)
"One person can change your life forever."

This really beautiful film proved it. There's no doubt the critics liked it much. The way the story was told and/or presented was very astonishing. The cast performed really well. It is a remarkable motion picture with a pretty good story. It's about a simple, shy lady who was able to change other's lives for the better. I liked the ending, too. This film just proves that a single person can do a lot in making the world a better place. You may not entirely and exactly change the whole world, but maybe change another person's very own world.

Breakfast at Tiffany's 1961,  PG)
Breakfast at Tiffany's
The movie was pretty cute. Audrey Hepburn deserves the Oscar nomination. The story is also nice. It just appears to be a bit boring, which is understandable since it was made a few decades ago. The way the movie ended is predictable, but good. It's a beautiful love story. It's very simple with a few twists, but I think it can capture hearts.
84
Disney's A Christmas Carol 2009,  PG)
Disney's A Christmas Carol
This was good. Beautiful from start to finish. I liked the story, the direction, the effects, the performance, everything. It was worth-watching. It gave me a breathtaking 1 hour and 36 minutes of viewing experience. I really liked it. I can't find the right words to describe this beautifully-crafted, dark-themed film. But when I had come to think about it, maybe it is not good enough for the critics. The story was great, the movie itself is. But, it lacks something. I think I was just overwhelmed by the 3D experience. But if you come to think of it, it is a beautiful work of art,but not enough to be called a masterpiece. Still, well done.
85
The Nightmare Before Christmas 1993,  PG)
The Nightmare Before Christmas
It was a very beautiful classic made by masters Henry Selick and Tim Burton. Imagine mixing Halloween with Christmas, and still, it turned out to be good. It's true that it's one of the best Halloween films up to this very moment. In terms of animation, it was pretty good. We all know that it was done in 1993, where animation technology is not as sophisticated as it is now. And still, it seems that it still manages to be one of the best. The story was really good. The children will absolutely enjoy it, as well as the adults. The bad news is, it was the first Tim Burton film I've seen to have less than five stars. But, who cares? It's still beautiful.
86
Schindler's List 1993,  R)
Schindler's List
Stunning. Indeed, a masterpiece. Steven Spielberg did an amazing job. One of the best WW2 films. I was never bored watching it. I was never shocked to see that almost everyone who saw this was amazed. It didn't only show how great Oskar Schindler is, but it also showed the dreadful reality the Jews suffered. It's about a man who lighted a candle of hope in the midst of the horrors of war. I really look up to this. It deserves every award it gained. It was one of the most critically acclaimed films in history, and it still is. A film I'd never forget for the rest of my life.
87
Paranormal Activity 2007,  R)
Paranormal Activity
"What happens when you sleep?" Paranormal Activity is one of the few horror films that I actually liked. It proves that you don't need breathtaking chase-scenes and complicated effects to produce a good horror film. Even waiting and sitting in silence can give you the chill. It was not boring though it was presented in a documentary style, and the idea was outstanding. This proves that you don't need to spend much to earn millions, right? It took very little for the creative filmmakers to show a lot. But personally, I think it's overrated.
88
The Patriot 2000,  R)
The Patriot
"I have long feared that my sins would return to visit me, and the cost is more than I can bear."

The Patriot is one of the greatest films I've seen. A very beautiful war film. I really do adore war films. The story was good. The movie was beautiful. It just shows that there are times when you have no other choice but to fight back. A film about duty, dignity, courage, country and family. It would have been better if the ending as different, a more powerful one. Still, it was brilliant.
89
Julie & Julia 2009,  PG-13)
Julie & Julia
This flick was amazing! The performance was great, especially of Streep's. The story was very inspiring. The director had done a really good job. It's about two different women who found cooking as their life-saver. As the tagline says, "Passion. Ambition. Butter. Do you have what it takes?", this movie engages its viewers into a fascinating lifetime memory. This light drama gives an amusing treat. I enjoyed every single scene. This is undoubtedly a must-see. Bon appetit!

Avatar 2009,  PG-13)
Avatar
"An All New World Awaits."

Master director James Cameron has done it again. This magnificent film is about the discovery of a new world, Pandora, which led Jake into his lifetime adventure. Our hero here, ignorant but with a strong heart, met the Na'vi whom he was supposed to sort of spy on that turned out to be the race he protected. Good direction, breathtaking scenes, brilliant effects, and a good story with a valuable lesson. All of these and more, brought to you by Avatar. Best seen in 3D. Personally, I'm not a fan of sci-fi films but this impressed me a lot. It has its way of making the audience believe in this humanoid race, the whole new world, and the creatures it beholds. It is highly recommended for everyone to see this, for words can never fully define this craft. James Cameron is once again the king of the world.

Ratatouille 2007,  G)
Ratatouille
"Anyone can cook!"

This is one of the best animated films ever done! I loved it from start to finish. Excellent screenplay, which unsurprisingly gained a nomination and the movie itself was so amazing that it gained a dashing Oscar win. Technically, everything is almost perfect.

This film surely could inspire its audience a lot. The motto, as explained in the film, means that anybody can cook, but only the fearless can be great. It says a lot. We all have our dreams, or the things we desire to do. Undoubtedly, everyone can do it. But in order to be great in the field we chose, we must have the guts. The world hated rats. They were disliked. They were treated as pests. The world was tough. The thing to do in order to survive is to steal food. But Remy made a difference. He stood firmly with what he believes in despite his disapproving father, the disgusted world and the many challenges he faced. Passion. Ambition. Courage. We must possess all of these to excel in what we do, just like Remy did.

Sherlock Holmes 2009,  PG-13)
Sherlock Holmes
"Dangerously Alluring"

From the depths of London, in the world-famous address: 221B Baker Street, comes the greatest detective of all time, Sherlock Holmes. And he's in for a new adventure. Together with Dr. Watson, his "loyal dog" as Blackwood called him, or the ever-reliable and suffering friend and the stunning Irene Adler, they take on this thrilling quest to defeat Lord Blackwood who's threatening England.

This is a magnificent remake of the ever-famous detective that would suit this modern era. It's a period film, that's not like any other. It got precise amount of sharp scenes and dialogues, and brilliant actors especially Robert Downey Jr. I fully agree that there's no such thing as "too much Robert Downey Jr." The best person to do this role is no other than Downey, and he goes well with Jude Law. A very unique and outstanding portrayal of Holmes. A bizarre Sherlock Holmes who proved that he's got the wits and the strength to let nothing slip through his hands. And it's not just the great talents of Holmes and Watson. This film was also able to display their incredibly crazy and tough times, and showed the world that nothing can ever break their being brothers not by blood, but by bond. A highly exciting film that I consider to be a smart one. Though presented in a whole new different perspective, it didn't lose its identity the way Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created this masterpiece.

No Country for Old Men 2007,  R)
No Country for Old Men
This is one of the most suspenseful films I've seen. A film that seems identical with "Road to Perdition". Since the killing of the police officer by Chigurh until the car crash, my heart pounded in a not so usual way. It's a thrilling story about Moss who happened to stumble upon a crime scene, drugs and money. Right after, he was engaged into a world he never dreamt of; a world of chaos. The character Anton Chigurh(Bardem) was really creepy. He scared the hell out of me! The way the film was made was undoubtedly done well. The film surely frightened me, and it still does.

(500) Days of Summer 2009,  PG-13)
(500) Days of Summer
"This is not a love story. This is a story about love."

One of the best romantic comedies I've seen. I actually fell in love with it. It is about Tom Hansen who believes in true love, destiny and happy endings who happens to meet Summer Finn, who believes the otherwise. It engages the viewers into a 500-day journey of this young man to find his way through love.

This is one of those films that withholds a beautiful story. It clearly states the fact that love can either make you or break you, or do both simultaneously. It also says that love can never work out if only one does the loving. It should be done by both parties.

"Most days of the year are unremarkable. They begin, and they end, with no lasting memories made in between. Most days have no impact on the course of a life. May 23rd was a Wednesday." And that was the day, perhaps the best, for a fresh new start for Tom. Love can be as sweet as heaven, and be bitter as hell. Tom experienced both. The ending was one of the best I've seen so far. I have this notion that sad endings hold a bigger impact, but that isn't true. A story that ends like this would surely be great.

When a story ends in an unexpected way, it doesn't necessarily mean that the person involved lost or something. There are times when the best thing isn't the one we hoped for.

The film definitely captured my heart. There may be this special someone whom we expect to be "the one". But things may change. There are times when we're just mistaken. Not with love, but with the person we chose to love. In that case, the best thing to do is to look again.

"Boy meets girl. Boy falls in love. Girl doesn't." That ends the 500 days. And then comes the new start.

Million Dollar Baby 2004,  PG-13)
Million Dollar Baby
As I see it, it's about protecting yourself and those that complete you. There's this phrase that Frankie often says. "Always protect yourself." It's also protecting those dearest to you. But, what if the only way to protect that someone is just not the way you actually expected?

The story was not fancy or anything. The story was really plain. It's fighting for your dreams, and it's either ending up great or a trash. This shows that everything may seem perfect, but all these could be lost in a glimpse of an eye. It's not just about winning. Like Scrap said, people die everyday. And not everybody's given the chance. It's about grabbing that chance and doing the thing you loved the most, and having someone to help you through just like how Maggie and Frankie filled in the empty slots in each other's lives.

Having a simple but ultimately beautiful story, together with its brilliant cast and magnificent director, this film can surely capture hearts. Even the simplest things can be the remarkable ones. This is a motion picture with so much to say.

This made me realize that there are just times when the only means to protect the ones we love is the most hurtful and unbearable thing we could ever do.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus 2009,  PG-13)
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
I would say that this film is very illogical and confusing, though I know for a fact that this is fantasy. It left a lot of questions in my mind. There are many things not fully explained or made clear. I also find the first scenes not that good. I must say that it just started to get better when Ledger came. Aside from him, the performances of the other Tony's were also good. This is not one of the best fantasy films I've seen. But, I must admit that this is very interesting. One of those films I'm really eager to see. It is beautiful, but not that superb. It may not be the among the best, but when I went out of the theater, I was sure of one thing: I enjoyed it.

In Her Shoes 2005,  PG-13)
In Her Shoes
"It is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart. I carry your heart. I carry it in my heart. "

This is one of those films I'm not that excited to see. I thought that it's just another typical American film I would easily forget right after seeing it. But, I was wrong. Thanks to a friend who insisted that I must see this film. The story of two sisters whose personalities drift so far apart, and the amazing people in the background, is really good. This is something so sentimental and beautiful. It would surely leave a bunch of good life lessons in your head and appreciation in your heart.

For Rose, the straight, responsible, smart, always busy and successful lawyer, it's about being responsible for protecting and living with someone who makes your life a living hell, which is no other than her younger sister. As for Maggie, it's just about always depending on your family and other people for everything financial and material, and just living the life of guys, sex, parties and cocktails. Nevertheless, they realized that amidst those differences and conflicts, they can never be fully happy without each other.

The things they thought that separate them apart were actually the reason why they can't avoid to be in each other's lives. They complete each other. And that'll never change.

The Aviator 2004,  PG-13)
The Aviator
"For some men, the sky was the limit. For him, it was just the beginning."

Pretty good film. Nice screenplay. Good scenes. Well-done direction. Excellent acting. It surely impressed me. It also shows a very interesting character, Howard Hughes. He's the man who proved that what the mind can conceive, the body can achieve. The man who made the impossible. Despite his Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and being a bit deaf, he was able to show America and the world that nothing can stop him from reaching the stars. Just like Howard, we should show 'em what we're made of. We should have enough courage to risk everything for something better.

From the moment I knew that this film existed, I readily became interested to see it. One of my biggest dreams was to travel, to live a life on the road while I'm still young enough to do it. I also don't want to die alone. I'm going to have a settled life after all the adventures. I'll never be young forever. It's like I'm having both Natalie Keener and Ryan Bingham inside.

The film was really smart and well-crafted. I liked it from start to finish. The cast was great. Pretty good direction and screenplay, too. It's really worth the best picture nomination. I like the scenes where he packs his suitcase and makes his way through the airport. Anyway, I liked it the way I liked (500) Days of Summer. See, Natalie here is Tom Hansen and Ryan as Summer Finn. Natalie believes in true love, romance and stuff. While Ryan doesn't want commitments. Alex is the female counterpart of Ryan. It's like having two Summer Finn's here.

Every person has a story. It may not turn out as you planned it to be, but it would surely be the best one can get.

I'm glad I saw this. Really remarkable.

There Will Be Blood 2007,  R)
There Will Be Blood
"I drink your milkshake!"

That was my favorite line in this film. I find it hard to describe this. It focused on the life of an overly evil, ambitious and selfish man. It's monstrously beautiful. Maybe that description would work. It's dark, it's comic. It's a far cry from what I expected. It's a rare film, I guess. I liked it though. The actors were really fantastic. Good Daniel Day-Lewis and remarkable Paul Dano. They carried the whole film. Good direction as well. The cinematography was good, just like that of Road to Perdition's and No Country For Old Men's. It showed that for a man as ambitous as Daniel Plainview, there would be no place for mercy and love. This is one hell of a ride!

Big Fish 2004,  PG-13)
Big Fish
"An adventure as big as life itself."

Perhaps, the best Tim Burton film I've seen so far. Tim Burton films are recognized because of their strangeness and dark ambiance. Big Fish may be one of the lightest, but generally, it still possesses that certain Tim Burton touch. The film was light but the story was still emotionally compelling. I really like Ewan McGregor's performance, and also of Albert Finney.

I loved everything about this film. The story was really awesome and touching. It shows a man in the character of Edward Bloom who has the guts and the spirit to turn himself into something big. Though he already achieved a handful of recognitions in his little town, he didn't allow himself to remain like this. Instead, he risked everything to be someone greater than who he used to be. And it was all worth it.

This film was very sentimental and touching. We all know that life can't be as extravagant and fancy as told by Edward. But life could always be a lot better through the power of imagination.

Alice in Wonderland 2010,  PG)
Alice in Wonderland
"You've got a very important date."

Indeed, I do. It's a film I've waited for more than a year. Tragically, I was not able to see it in the nearest 3D theater because of an overly extended hit film (actually, it's Avatar). Anyway, it still looked good on a typical digital cinema.

Honestly, and I hate to say this, it's not one of Tim Burton's best. With regards to special effects and 3D technology, it has gone beyond expectations. It's just a few steps away from the groundbreaking achievement of Avatar. Yet, as a whole, I would consider it just a little above average. There's nothing so special, disregarding the effects. Tim Burton is an acclaimed director and we know his capabilities in terms of filmmaking. However, Alice in Wonderland is not something to celebrate, aside from its big sales.

The costume and set design were marvelous and out of the usual. This dark remake of the children's classic was admirable. Tim Burton still has the skill for effective moviemaking. But what I loved best were the actors. Mia Wasikowska was good and she perfectly fits the role. Anne Hathaway was really amazing. She has gone far as an actress. Helena Bonham Carter was brilliant. She's one of the best in the film. And Johnny Depp was funny and convincing. No, he didn't steal the spotlight from Alice. In fact, he complemented her pretty well.

All in all, it was worth the wait. I really had a good time.

Pan's Labyrinth 2006,  R)
Pan's Labyrinth
"Innocence has a power evil cannot imagine."

Who said fairytales are just for children? Through the power of effective filmmaking and creative storytelling, fairytales would flawlessly suit adults as they did with children. This was a great film with great direction, acting, set design, costumes and imagination. But, the thing this film lacked is good special effects. Specifically in the scene where Ofelia went face to face with the giant frog, the effect was extremely laughable. Other than that, it was close to perfection.

Behind every dark episode, there would be a light to make things a lot better. Pan's Labyrinth taught me that.

Invictus 2009,  PG-13)
Invictus
"His people needed a leader. He gave them a champion."

Another world-turning film from Clint Eastwood. Morgan Freeman played the part of a prisoner who became South Africa's president. During his term, there was still a faction between the whites and blacks. You could never blame the blacks. Of course you'll surely refuse to trust the people who once treated you as animals. One way to show their great scorn was to support any team that competes against the Springboks. However, Nelson Mandela (Freeman) believed that a way to unite his people is through this sport, rugby. And to do so, he asked Pienaar (Damon), the captain of the Springboks, to do the impossible. Mandela wanted the team to win the world cup. Realistically, the team was weak. Still, Pienaar was determined to do as the president asked him.

One thing I liked about Mandela is that he was imprisoned for almost three decades and yet, he easily forgives the whites and urges to be one with them.

Despite of the disapprovals, we should always put to mind that it's always us who'll make the final outcome of everything in our lives. We are the masters of our fate. We are the captains of our soul.

Zombieland
"This place is so dead."

Well-written screenplay, awesome presentation, convincing effects, superb acting and adventures you would not even dream of- these are just some of what Zombieland has to offer. I adore every little thing about this. Without a doubt, this is an ass-kicking must-see. You'll miss half of your life is you don't. Seriously.

An Education 2009,  PG-13)
An Education
A striking film about a 16-year-old girl who wanted to see what the world has to offer. She likes France. She's smart. She's ready to do anything. To achieve her aspirations, she and her parents believed that she must first be accepted at Oxford. Then comes David Goldman. A rich playboy a lot older than Jenny who captivated her by showing that she could have what she loved most and dreamt of if she chooses to be with him. Paris, music, fun. That's what she wants, and that's what David has. So, she jumped into a conclusion that she doesn't need Oxford to be who she wanted to be.

It's a smart coming-of-age film that's a must-see especially for every teenage girl, like me. A really beautiful movie. I love the setting, the characters' outfits, the acting and the story. Carey Mulligan was convincing. Imagine being 24 and looking and acting as 16. She gave a notable performance; her being a school girl who rushed her way into being a woman. She looked really pretty in the film especially in those scenes when she's going out with David and his friends. She looked good in an "Audrey Hepburn" guise.

"An Education" implies that people can learn in many ways rather than just sitting in the classroom and reading a book. Many believe that education in the outside is much more valuable than what we learn in school. So, Jenny believed that she can acquire knowledge and know the world if she stays with David. But, Jenny seemed to have forgotten the value of education she gets from her school, her teachers, and her books.

There may be things we're dying to have or we're dying to be. But, life can never be "fast-forwarded". We must let ourselves grow gradually into we what we're supposed to be.

Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire 2008,  R)
Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire
"Life is hard. Life is short. Life is painful. Life is rich. Life is....Precious."

How hard is it to be a teenager? What if you add illiteracy, abuse, being raped and impregnated by your father twice, living with your mother who always makes you feel unloved and worthless, feeling like nothing more than a fat, black, stupid girl, and being disdained by the society? Yes. That's Precious.

Brutal. Depressing. Honest. Lee Daniels have made a masterpiece. Here, we witness the life of Precious wherein we clearly see both her real life and her fantasies. Whenever times get really tough, she has this way of escaping reality and letting her aspirations take over. Though life seemed living hell for Precious, there are still the little flickers of sympathy which brought hope. Gabourey Sidibe was superb. She surely did deserve the nomination. Mo'Nique was incredible! No wonder she won Best Supporting Actress in the Academy. It's a film that knocked my heart out. But, I think Up in the Air should have won Best Adapted Screenplay.

Maybe life may not be as beautiful as we dreamt it would be. But, we must give all our efforts and devote our time to reach whatever we can. That in a dark, terrible day, there may always be a better tomorrow only if we try hard enough.

One of the things I liked most about this is the line in the end which says "For precious girls everywhere". That makes this film a must-see and it tells us that it's not just about Precious, it's also about us.

Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief 2010,  PG)
Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief
Pretty neat. It was enjoyable, it was fun. The movie was decent. I also liked its being fast-paced. But, I think the critics just made a fair review about this. It got not-so-nice reviews not only because they are comparing it to Harry Potter, but it's just what the movie is. The concept of Greek gods, demigods, the camp were good. But, the story itself of The Lightning Thief isn't that brilliant. Anyway, Logan Lerman has a face. A good one. I think it's made more of to entertain the audience rather than to show a masterpiece. It's not something big, but I would love to see the upcoming instalments.

Inglourious Basterds 2009,  R)
Inglourious Basterds
"If you need heroes, send in the Basterds."

Quentin Tarantino is indeed a genius! This one was a marvel. Brilliant from start to finish. He's the man who rewrote history in a way people would love and remember. The movie was very original and unorthodox. Really fearless and exceptional. It surely stands out among the World War II films ever created. The direction was flawless. The ensemble was perfect. The technical stuff, cinematography, sounds, etcetera, were excellent. The screenplay, staggering. Personally, I think Brad Pitt should have been nominated for Best Actor.

It's a film that surely is beautiful and outstanding in a remarkable way, and very enjoyable in every second from start to finish. Sometimes, the facts are so plain, simple and eventually becomes boring once we are fed with it for over a hundred times. So, it would really be nice if some genius lets his brilliant mind bring about a flight of the imagination that transforms those dreary pieces of information into something livelier and a lot more interesting.

I have been aware and familiar about the World War II. At the same time, thanks to Mr. Tarantino, I have witnessed the comic, sinister and better made-up chronicle of it. If I were to choose, I think I like the Tarantino version better.

The Road 2009,  R)
The Road
"If I were God, I would have made the world just so and no different. And so I have you... I have you. "

What would you do if you wake up and realize that the world isn't the same and will remain like that forever? It was unclear why and how the world turned into a complete mess. A world that can no longer sustain life. No animals, falling trees, disturbing atmosphere, few humans left alive. Due to the situation, most of the people resorted to cannibalism. The bad ones capture other people, kill them, and eat them. It was a really tough time and it was their way to survive.

The hardest challenge, however, is not finding food or having a place to stay. It's remaining human while fighting for survival. The movie focuses on a father and his son as they journey to reach the coast, where they hope they could find something better, while faced with the many challenges on the road. All they have was a pistol with two shells, food stored on the pushcart they found along the way, their clothes and shoes, their spirit and humanity, and most importantly, each other.

There are times when the father gradually loses his humanity. It was his son who keeps him sane, whom he calls his warrant. The ending was somehow heartbreaking, but, at least the son had a new hope.

What I love most about this is the father-son relationship. I really like films with unconditional love between a parent and the child, and vice versa. Well, I like the father-son relationship more. I don't know why. Maybe it's just because the females are more emotional and expressive than boys. So, it would be more striking for a boy, especially a father, to express unconditional love. That's just from my point of view.

I don't find it really beautiful or whatsoever, but, I think it's an important film. The world is not far from what it looked like in the film if we continue to care less about it. On the personal aspect, it implies that there will always be challenges that will push us to lose our humanity. All we have to do is fight for what we believe is right. It will never be easy, but it will always be worth it.

A Knight's Tale 2001,  PG-13)
A Knight's Tale
He will rock you!

There have been awful criticisms about the film. Yes, it's unbelievable, and from all aspects, definitely incorrect. That's why many loathed it. Well, as for me. It was fantastic! I suppose that it's main purpose is not to be something great, something to praise, something to admire, but to be a mere piece of entertainment. And it did pretty well on that aspect. I actually found myself occasionally smiling.

Heath Ledger was incredible. The whole cast was amazing. What a magnificent ensemble. Aside from Ledger, I also want to point out the noteworthy performance of Paul Bettany. The story was nice. It was not something grand or big. It's just about a peasant who willfully dreamt to be a knight.

It has something to teach not to the mind, but, to the heart. That whoever you are, wherever you came from, nothing can ever stop you to become someone noble if you are strong enough to never let go of your dreams. This is not a story about a king, a prince or a hero. This is a story about a royalty, a knight, not by birth, but by worth.

A knight at heart, some trusty friends, a lovely damsel, and a bitter rival with the amazing Queen music that will rock your hearts out, this surely is something to see.

The Bucket List 2007,  PG-13)
The Bucket List
"When he closed his eyes, his heart was opened."

A really moving story of two persons from the end of both worlds who happened to share the same thing: cancer. Both of them were even given less than a year to live. Imagine an all-knowing mechanic and a billionaire hospital tycoon sharing the same room. However, their differences even made them friends. Then, starts their Bucket List. It's a list of things you would want to do before you die.

The opposite personalities both had made the film quite interesting and thrilling. I loved Edward Cole with his kind of "I-own-the-world" attitude and the humble yet all-knowing mechanic Chambers with very effective performances from both Freeman and Nicholson.

The narration, the introduction, the first scenes and the last scenes were really remarkable. But, the middle part was not quite as good. I don't really find those scenes in different parts of the world really beautiful. The places were beautiful, but I found the scenes weak. The only thing to raise those scenes was each and every conversation that revealed what they've been carrying inside little by little. And the most beautiful part of the film, of course it's the ending. The last line was, perhaps, one of the most powerful ones.

It certainly is a film to see. Love. Friendship. Will of the heart. Those can conquer all, even death.

The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros (Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros) 2005,  Unrated)
The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros (Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros)
Congested Manila slums project both the adorable and harsh everyday reality in the coming-of-age film Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros (The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros), a mesmerizing piece of actuality in the midst of poverty, crime, family, forbidden love and everything in between.

The superb direction from Auraeus Solito brings to life the blunt and honest writing of Michiko Yamamoto that mainly revolves on the conflict between Maxi's affection for the young, handsome cop Victor and his family's criminal trade. Turning sharply from being light and charming into being brutal and sinister, the plot unveils Maxi's rather painful pursuit of his redemption.

Amazingly, the film exhibits the acceptance and tolerance of his manly family and the unpleasant neighborhood for his homosexuality. Moreover, amidst the disagreeable society and culture, the Filipino virtues of family devotion and faith live on.

It is also a picture of contrasts. The neighborhood remains in high spirits despite belonging to the third-world setting. Their apartment, though scarcely roomy, displays a cheery and relaxed atmosphere. The homosexuality is openly accepted despite the great influence of Roman Catholicism.

Maxi is such a captivating blend of the cunning and the innocent, bubbly yet emotionally defenseless. Solito's knack for filmmaking that can actually stir such performance is incredible. Young, vibrant and talented Nathan Lopez carries out a performance that greatly fits the lead role and is splendidly complemented by the rest of the cast. In addition, the gripping cinematography from Nap Jamir and the compelling score from Pepe Smith essentially contributed toward the creation of a superior and exceptional feat.

It is very uncommon for a film to pencil in an overpowering portrait of reality-based concept that truly lingers. What is even more gratifying is that this slice of brilliance Filipinos crafted is critically recognized around the globe. Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros is a jewel of the independent film industry that acts on each individual while instituting a humanitarian paradigm more than just of tolerance, but of nonbiased judgment.

The Departed 2006,  R)
The Departed
"Cops or Criminals. When you're facing a loaded gun, what's the difference?"

A sharp and exciting screenplay brought to life by the brilliant direction of Martin Scorsese. The scenes were intense and overpowering. Being so exciting and thrilling, it would not even make the audience feel that it actually ran for two and a half hours. Perhaps, the best thing about the film is the acting. Everybody did a pretty good job. My favorites for The Departed were Leonardo DiCaprio and Jack Nicholson. They almost owned the whole film. Mark Wahlberg was surprisingly awesome! I never thought he could do such a role, after seeing his fatherly figure in The Lovely Bones. As for Matt Damon, it never entered my mind that he would have a role I'd hate. I loved him in Saving Private Ryan and Invictus, then The Departed turned the whole world upside-down. Matt Damon was also wonderful though. I would always remember their out of the ordinary performances. After seeing movies such as The Road to Perdition, Public Enemies and now, The Departed, I think I'm on my way to falling in love with gangster films.

Braveheart 1995,  R)
Braveheart
From the ravaged towns of Scotland rises the hero who willingly fought for freedom and his country come what may. This deeply captivating masterpiece has brought to life the shadows war and invasion cast upon men.

Braveheart had the impact The Patriot was short of. This film not only let me witness treachery, heroism, friendship, love and courage, it made me a part of it. It sunk deep into my soul and took me into somewhere I never thought I'd be.

William Wallace is such an admirable persona of a real hero, warrior and patriot not only of Scotland, but of life, freedom and love. I was profoundly moved by his way of rising with undying courage every time heartbreaks burn him into ashes.

What is even more amazing is that Mel Gibson who starred as Wallace was also the one to direct it. Mel Gibson is very fortunate to be much blessed as well as I am blessed enough to witness this marvel.

Edge of Darkness 2010,  R)
Edge of Darkness
Pretty effective thriller film. Overall, it was good enough. It is a thriller-action without losing the emotions. It is not something grand with regards to the story, but more of something interesting as the entire movie itself. Mel Gibson surely raised the film to its greatest. It ran for almost two hours and I was never bored even for a single second. It should have gained lesser rating from me, but the ending redeemed the film. It was the best for this movie; the best for a man with nothing to lose. All in all, Edge of Darkness kept me on the edge of my seat.

It was a pretty nice film. Watching it won't make you tired and won't make you feel bored either. The screenplay was really good, as well as the direction. The English Patient 1996,  R)
The English Patient
"In memory, love lives forever."

If this film is to show something, it is love tested in the most extreme conditions you could ever think of. The English Patient brings romance, betrayal, war, and man's vulnerability and longings all together.

I personally think that this picture is flawless, having a tale from the events of two different periods woven together to reveal the story behind the so-called the English patient. Everything was highly superb. The sophisticated screenplay brought to life by the magnificent direction and well-acted scenes, including the rest of the technicalities such as the cinematography and sounds, made The English Patient a historical feat.

I feel pity for Geoffrey Clifton as he became a helpless victim of adultery and betrayal. What would be more hurtful than being wronged by an unfaithful wife whom you loved with all your life and a disloyal friend whom you put your trust into? I also feel deep contempt for Katharine Clifton and Count Laszlo Almasy because of their vile love affair. However, every time they're together wherein they feel utmost happiness, I can't help to feel pity for them, too. They were two souls who found each other, bound by love yet separated by fate and being attached to someone else.

Though appearing to be close to perfect, both with the film technicalities and emotional connection to its audience, it was not able to capture me whole. Well, I'm not quite sure if there's something wrong with the film or if there's something wrong with me. Nonetheless, I feel very fortunate to have witnessed this.

If there's one thing on earth to conquer everything, it must be love.

Chicago 2002,  PG-13)
Chicago
Sexy. Seductive. Irresistible. Chicago is the best musical I've seen so far. It's full of burning passions flawlessly delivered by the magnificent cast. The screenplay was not something really sensible but it was very interesting and entertaining which, of course, was brought to life by Marshall's superb direction. Every song number was excellently made and each complemented the scenes quite well. All songs were great but Mr. Cellophane won my heart. The acting was undoubtedly effective. Catherine Zeta-Jones was so impressive and she's surely worthy for her Oscar. Renee Zellweger did pretty well, too. My favorite character for this would be Billy Flynn as portrayed by the exceptional and charming Richard Gere who was able to razzle dazzle his audience, including me. But of course, Reilly's out-of-the-ordinary performance projected the most admirable character for this movie who's no other than the ever-loyal Amos together with his unconditional yet stupid love for Roxie. This film is something to be treasured for a lifetime. I'm very happy to see such marvel. As I finished it, I saw myself quite pleased and smiling yet wanting for more.

The Godfather 1972,  R)
The Godfather
"An offer you can't refuse."

I liked the concept and the theme very much. However, I guess it's just too long which made it hard to endure until the end. I also think that it somehow lacked action, which I expected a lot knowing that it's a gangster film. Still, in terms of technicalities and presentation, The Godfather is absolutely over the top. The last scenes were outstanding. To see The Godfather is surely an offer nobody can refuse.

The Godfather, Part II 1974,  R)
The Godfather, Part II
"If anything in this life is certain, if history has taught us anything, it is that you can kill anyone. "

If I disliked the long running time of the first one, this second installment is much longer. However, this is certainly better than the first one. To add the flashbacks concerning Don Vito Corleone's life was a very smart move. It got more action and thrill than the first one. Also, the ending was quite a smash. It was not something loud but I can feel its heavy impact. I think that is mainly the reason why The Godfather films are hailed as glorious feats up to this day.

The Godfather, Part III 1990,  R)
The Godfather, Part III
"I would burn in hell to protect you."

Though the least appreciated, this is my favorite in the trilogy. Truly, it is not very understandable if you haven't seen the first two. However, I find it better in many aspects. First and foremost, it had much increased action and thrill. Among the three installments, this one stirred up the deepest emotions which actually made Al Pacino deliver a very convincing performance. He did pretty well in the first two films, but he showed his best here in the last one. I must say that The Godfather films all ended up beautifully but this will be the closest to your heart.

Donnie Brasco 1997,  R)
Donnie Brasco
It was an effective film projecting the true-to-life story about the undertakings of an FBI agent against the Mafia. A motion picture not just about life and death. It's also about friendship and family, and everything that falls in between. In my opinion, the actors raised the film to its peak. They were believable and convincing. Another thing I liked about this is that this time, Pacino isn't the Don as we got to know him in The Godfather Trilogy. Still, he did his role pretty good. And of course Johnny Depp did great, too. The movie itself is realistic. There are certain points in life where you don't know what step to take, what decision to make. And sometimes, you always lose something in making a choice.

The Devil's Advocate
"Vanity, definitely my favorite sin. "

If I'm going to say something about The Devil's Advocate, well, it scared the hell out of me! The screenplay was, in my opinion, witty and creative as well as the direction. The cast was undoubtedly great. Each of them was able to perform their roles perfectly well. Among them, Al Pacino stood out. He was superb! He's such a brilliant actor. The story, concept, direction and the cast may all have been good, but he definitely brought out the best in this movie. It wasn't groundbreaking, though. It was just a little above average. Still, it is, in itself, pretty amazing. You shouldn't miss this.

"Anything can happen during the dog days of summer. On August 22nd, 1972, everything did."

Aside from the magnificent Al Pacino, the screenplay raised the whole film. It was kind of thrilling and peculiar in a pretty nice way. What is even more interesting is that it really happened in reality. It ran for over two hours, but it felt like it's only about 30 minutes long. That's how entertaining this is. It was a real treat.

Dear John
"I'll see you soon, then."

Dear John is the best Nicholas Sparks novel-turned-film I've ever seen. It may not be as big as that of Titanic, Moulin Rouge!, or Shakespeare in Love but it surely pierced my heart. Channing Tatum made this a hundred times better. I first saw him in Public Enemies but I didn't recognize him that much there. So, I'll just pretend that I first saw him in this movie. Seeing him act for the first time, I was impressed right on. However, I agree with many people that our dear filmmakers should've adapted the ending of the book. I haven't read it but a friend narrated it to me. That ending would surely give so much impact than the one supplied by this movie. Still, it was not really that bad. At least, the movie's last scene made my heart smile. Dear John is a film that truly lingers. All in all, I'm pretty sure I fell in love with Dear John.

The Tourist 2010,  PG-13)
The Tourist
"Why is everyone trying to kill me?"

There's been a very grave misunderstanding here. 20 percent? Are they nuts? It surely deserves at least 60. Once again, a gangster film made me fall in love with it. What I like the best about The Tourist is that it will make you enjoy every second of it and won't ever make you feel tired or bothered. Also, it was so enjoyable that I thought I only watched it for 20 minutes when it was actually an hour and 50 minutes long. However, it surely had flaws especially in the story itself. The opening scene and the body was somehow weak. But, the ending redeemed everything. Moreover, the cast was undeniably great. I'm not trying hard to like the film merely because it has Johnny Depp. I need not to make such effort because it really is likable. Truly, we are all dying to see films that would make our jaws drop or make us admire how great filmmakers can accomplish. But there are times when all we want is to sit back, relax and let the film make this moment enjoyable and unforgettable for us. That's why sometimes we go see movies like The Tourist.

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World 2003,  PG-13)
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
Seeing a seemingly realistic but daring adventure in the eyes of an extraordinary man mainly shows what Master and Commander is all about. The story did not sail too far from the coast of what must have happened in reality. It was not too grand to make it unbelievable, and not too plain to make it boring. It just shows that a story about warfare, duty, honor and country need not to be overdone just to make it epic. I must say that everybody did a pretty good job. There is no doubt that such films are one of the hardest to make, but it just shows that all the hard work are worth it. Again, it is proven that the best way to motivate men to be the best they can ever be is to give them a leader, and that courage can make you conquer the invincible and bring you victory that would satisfy the deepest desires of the heart. Truly, Capt. Jack is not called "Lucky Jack" for nothing.

127 Hours
Sometimes, there are stories that appear to be either too good or too bad to be true. On the 26th day of April 2003, a real story which is, in my opinion, too unpleasant to bear came to pass.

Revealing power in a film which constitutes motionlessness and a single cast would appear to be impossible. That was what I thought. And I humbly admit that I thought wrong. Danny Boyle made another breathtaking tour de force. He transformed this seemingly limited storyline into a motion picture that actually captures the audience's utmost being. With a mind so creative and with a lead actor so impressive, Danny Boyle once again created a glorious feat after the triumphant Slumdog Millionaire.

As for James Franco, whoever chose him for the role made the best decision. To say that he did great is an understatement. He became Aron Ralston and moved every bit of my soul. To own almost all of the running time is so much pressure for an actor but he did it flawlessly. His acting was exactly what the film demands. You'll never meet such an actor in decades.

127 Hours did not just became an additional favorite picture. It also gave me another favorite actor. I must say that this film has the right doses of everything. Music, cinematography, direction, screenplay, acting and editing were splendid. Every single thing about this impressed me a lot.

Amidst all of those accomplishments, the best about this is Aron Ralston himself. Honestly, I can never be as brave as this man. His heartfelt experience that put him between life and death reached out to me and placed my spirit into a panorama of Aron's ordeal.

127 Hours is a victory not just of Danny Boyle, not just of James Franco and not just of Aron Ralston. This is a triumph of life and humanity.

The Social Network 2010,  PG-13)
The Social Network
Before I saw this, I was thinking that it might be boring because it concerns the technicalities of everything online and lawsuits. It's mainly about Facebook and its founders, and everything they went through before reaping the fruits of their labor. Truly, many of us agree that Facebook is highly addictive. I'm one of the millions who loved the site. What's surprising is that it was a biopic, which has the tendency to be very much serious thus making it boring for some, but it's quite absorbing. There was never a dull moment. I never thought a massive Internet hit such as Facebook could possibly start from a breakup on a Tuesday night. Everything was just so contemporary and that added much to the film's appeal in my opinion. Next to Catch Me If You Can, it's the most pleasurable biopic I've seen. It's a picture of the modern history that would shape the next ten decades of the Internet. It's an unsurprising Oscar nominee for the Best Picture and is obviously a front-runner. Good work, everyone.

The Town 2010,  R)
The Town
"I'll see you again, on this side or the other."

I expected so much from The Town knowing that it gained many positive reviews. I also thought that it must be very thrilling since it's mainly crime and action. To tell you bluntly, I was disappointed. Though the screenplay and direction as well as the acting were superb, I think the movie itself is boring for its genre. I wasn't very much thrilled. I thought most of the scenes would be tight and gripping. Action is just the genre that I can watch whatever my mood is because it's tough and cool so I really expected that their guns would do most of the talking. I guess a good story and extreme actions rarely come in one film. At least, it seemed very realistic. However, the last scenes redeemed everything. I was thinking that it wasn't worthy of the good reviews from the critics but you can never fully judge any work of art without seeing everything. The last scenes were really good.

The King's Speech 2010,  PG-13)
The King's Speech
It takes leadership to conquer a nation's fear. It takes friendship to conquer your own.

Usually, a film regarding war and leadership involves a very grand story that reflects the impact of the situation in a wide scope. To mention a few, we have Saving Private Ryan, Gladiator, Braveheart and The Patriot. The King's Speech is a very different one.

It is indeed a very difficult task for a ruler to suppress fear among his people. But how can you save others when you can't even save yourself? This is what The King's Speech is mainly about.

When it comes to the screenplay, direction and cinematography, The King's Speech is surely over the top. However, the acting is something much more. Geoffrey Rush, Helena Bonham Carter and Colin Firth were all magnificent. I don't really think that everybody can portray their characters. I find their roles requiring perfection and classiness. And these three were flawless.

At first, I thought of giving it five stars. However, the delivery of the speech made me change my mind. The speech was really powerful and moving but our lead just read it while trying his best not to stammer. He didn't feel it. All he cared about is that he wanted to finish the speech without too much stutter.

What I treasure the most about this is how his friend never gave up on him when he himself already surrendered.

Scent of a Woman 1992,  R)
Scent of a Woman
Obviously an old film. It shows in every single detail. Though old and long, every second mattered a lot. It is full of substance and meaning. Mainly, it shows how two very different persons filled the emptiness in each other's life. I loved it from start to finish. But the last scenes were superb! Al Pacino was outstanding. No wonder he bagged the Oscar. I really love this guy. Certainly a must-see.

Love of Siam (Rak haeng Siam) 2008,  Unrated)
Love of Siam (Rak haeng Siam)
Tong wrapped his arm around Mew. He gently caressed his hair. They looked at each other's eyes and they kissed. That was the most precious moment of the film- an act that affirms how beautiful and painful love can be.

I never thought that a "gay love" can be so pure and innocent. Every moment was captivating and heartbreaking. The story was not some sort of a masterpiece and the film itself isn't. I was surprised that this was Thailand's Oscar entry. However, the actors were really good and they acted very naturally. Every tear, every smile, every feeling seemed so real.

I loved how everything happened. I find the whole thing very realistic. Yes, it involved two young souls but it managed not to make things lighter than they're supposed to be. By the way, I'd like to point out the song Mew wrote. It was really beautiful. It's one of the best things about the film.

You see, this is not that good to be regarded as a masterpiece. However, this is very beautiful and poignant. The emotions are overwhelming. It is the kind that slowly penetrates your soul.

Jane Eyre 2011,  PG-13)
Jane Eyre
I don't really know if having read the book made the viewing experience more remarkable or less thrilling. Anyway, it remained faithful to Bronte's literary masterpiece, which is a personal favorite. It's just that the emotions evoked by the film were not as strong and striking as the ones elicited by the book. Maybe it's because of the limited running time. By the way, there are also certain shots I really liked. This motion picture surely is tastefully made. All in all, it's a pretty neat adaptation of the timeless classic bearing the same title.

Let Me In 2010,  R)

I didn't finish watching the film due to some unavoidable circumstances but a friend narrated the rest of the story when we met yesterday. I found it monstrously beautiful. It surely isn't your typical horror flick.

The Fighter
Honest. Moving. Absorbing. It's definitely one of the best biopics ever made. Everything was perfect. The screenplay, the direction, editing, cinematography; all were flawless. But I have to say that the acting was best thing about this. As it reached its end, it left me in awe. Well done, guys. Well done.

A flawless film which is certainly one of the best not only this year but perhaps in the past decade, and superb Joseph Gordon-Levitt who surely deserves an Oscar nod. A perfect mix of drama and comedy. Certainly a must-see.

Taken 2008,  PG-13)
Taken
First, I can't believe it's rotten. The action scenes were very good. I loved Liam Neeson and his character, Bryan, who would do anything and everything for his naive daughter. Sorry but I didn't like Kim here. She's so immature and she doesn't seem to love her father that much. Still, I liked the film a lot, especially how much our lead loved his daughter though I don't like her. All in all, it wasn't only a good action film but also a touching father-daughter flick. It kept me at the edge of my seat.

The Help 2011,  PG-13)

"I'd imagine the whole world was one big machine. Machines never come with any extra parts, you know. They always come with the exact amount they need. So I figured, if the entire world was one big machine, I couldn't be an extra part. I had to be here for some reason."

A heartwarming film about the magic of dedication and passion with a very charming cinematography, art direction, editing and message for the soul. If you're fond of films especially the classic ones, you'll fall in love with Hugo.

The Artist 2011,  PG-13)
The Artist
In the generation of filmmaking where exquisite visual and audio effects added so much to a movie's success and brilliance, The Artist proved that silent motion pictures can still compete. With a screenplay so clever and interesting, a direction so superb, a cinematography so classy, and actors so splendid, I would be tremendously surprised if this doesn't bag the Best Picture statuette in the upcoming Academy Awards. All the things needed to regard a film as a true masterpiece are all in the top-notch motion picture The Artist. Just perfect.

The Descendants 2011,  R)

Magnifico 2003,  Unrated)
Magnifico
Aside from presenting the usual scenario in a typical Filipino community, Magnifico is a heartfelt and beautiful tale about a seemingly little and insignificant boy who was able to touch the hearts of the people around him. Well-written screenplay, superb acting and direction, and its ability to appeal to its audience's emotion made this a jewel of Filipino filmmaking.

V for Vendetta 2006,  R)
V for Vendetta
"Remember, remember the fifth of November..."

V for Vendetta is a dark, mysterious and smart presentation of how the wrongdoings of a few for their own benefits can ruin a man, a family, and even an entire country. Natalie Portman was admirable as well as Hugo Weaving. You won't even feel that this ran for more than two hours. Maybe V for Vendetta is one of the most intelligent films I've ever seen. Overall, this is a well-crafted piece of art.

Love Actually 2003,  R)
Love Actually
WARNING: Tons of spoilers.

I really like the feeling when you're watching a film and it's being so exciting and enjoyable that you don't want it to end. Actually, I started watching this movie and only after the introduction of the many characters, I ended it intentionally. Yes, I admit that it's mainly because of Judy and John's unlikely activity. But, there's a ton of love stories there so why waste the opportunity just because of a single one, right? And honestly, I was very fulfilled and happy to have made the right decision. This is one big romantic comedy to celebrate. There's love, there's fun. The main point of this film is actually similar to (500) Days of Summer. This is not just a love story. It's a story about love.

To start off, we have the introductory narration by Hugh Grant. He plays the friendly and easy-going character David who is no less than the Prime Minister of Britain. The love story? He fell in love with one of his staffs, the chubby as they call her, Natalie. It's not necessarily forbidden love between them. It's just that it's not quite proper for them to love each other for political reasons. I think their light and positive auras attracted them to one another. Among all the stories in this film, theirs is the most fairytale-like. Really likable. Going back to the introductory part, he said, "Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion's starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don't see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often, it's not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it's always there - fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know, none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge - they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I've got a sneaking suspicion... love actually is all around. " I consider it compelling. After that, it made me wanna hug those people I love. A good start, eh?

The next one is the happily married Harry and Karen, who's no other than the younger sister of PM David. They seemed to be living a perfect family life until Mia comes along, the pretty secretary who's currently hitting on Harry. Emma Thompson played the lovely Karen who is always ready to offer a helping hand to others but soon found out that she can't even help herself while her husband becomes attracted to another woman. Harry, who is played by Alan Rickman, appears to be strict and firm but is proved to be vulnerable to the seductive Mia. I found this story the nearest one to reality. Cheating and betrayal are very evident in relationships nowadays. When Karen realized that the necklace she found was not actually for her, then she just quietly cried in the room, it sure does broke my heart. Karen is one of the most admirable characters in this film.

In the office, there's another love story. It is the great admiration of Sarah (Laura Linney), the best editor of Harry, for Karl (Rory MacGregor) who is the chief engineer. Everyone's been advising Sarah to make the move. It was actually Karl who asked her to dance with him at the Christmas party where things turn well for the two. But, it was Sarah's mentally ill brother who gets in the way. I admire Sarah a lot here. He has been liking Karl for years and though tings get better for them, she still didn't neglect her responsibility to her brother. It takes such strength to let go of the one you've been dreaming of. She's such a noble woman. Maybe one of the love stories I could somehow relate to. The crush thingy. But, not the brother, and the things-turning-well stuff. Only the admiration doodad. Yeah, I know I suck.

We now move on to Mark that is played by Andrew Lincoln, who's a friend of Mia. His best friend, Peter (Chiwetel Ejiofor), was recently married to Juliet played by the beautiful Keira Knightley. He appears to be disliking Juliet and they haven't actually talked. When Juliet was asking for the video of her wedding, she made her way into Mark to know what the problem is. The twist here is that she discovered that Mark actually loved her. This is one of my favorite stories. When he surprised Juliet during Christmas, one thing on one of the boards really touched me a lot. "To me you are perfect and with my wasted heart I will love you." It's really heartbreaking. I admire Mark for stepping back so that is best buddy could be happy, even if it requires him to sacrifice the woman he loves.

Mark, Peter and Juliet were friends to the author Jamie who is Colin Firth. He just discovered that his wife was having an affair with his brother. So, he decided to kind of move out where he met Aurelia, his Portuguese maid. Though they are both having a hard time understanding each other's language, they understood each other's heart. The really sweet thing here is that Jamie actually studied Portuguese when Aurelia went back to her country and Aurelia actually studied English at the same time. I also loved their conversation when Jamie said, "This is my favorite time of the day, driving you." Aurelia didn't understand that but in turn she said in Portuguese, "This is my saddest time of the day, leaving you." which Jamie didn't understand as well. Really nice one, but not among my favorites.

Going back to Karen, she's been a very good friend of Daniel (Liam Neeson). His wife recently died and he's left with his stepson, Samuel (Thomas Sangster). He finds it hard to get in touch with the boy because it was always his wife who talks to him before. He has no choice but to get to know his stepson and later on discovers a new kind of hope with him. They quite complement each other that it even seemed they're real father and son. The fun thing here is that he helps his son cope with a problem he least expected. Samuel was in love with a popular girl in school. Daniel tries to help him out. Daniel also had his love story right at the end. He met Carol, another parent in Sam's school. I am a fan of father-and-son stories. Concerning a romantic comedy, their story is really a good one due to the fact that the other stories were predominantly romantic love, while theirs is more of fatherly compassion. This is a good one to balance things out.

We now move on to another. They were making highly intense scenes for an erotic movie. They fell in love. The one in charge was Tony (Abdul Salis). He was the friend of Colin (Kris Marshall) who always wanted to be with a woman. He's always rejected. He plans to go to USA thinking that girls would love his "cute British accent". The thing that surprised me a lot was that he actually was successful, and he also brought Carla for Tony. By the way, Colin is part of the catering services for Peter and Juliet's wedding. These two stories were among the least favorites of mine. I didn't like them much.

The another not-romantic-love story here is where Billy Mack (Bill Nighy), the old rock star who's surprisingly at the top of the charts this Yuletide season, insults his single, speaks a very foul language, is the perfect example of lust, and ridicules his manager Joe (Gregor Fisher), actually spent Christmas with him. He said that Christmas is a time to be spent with the people you love, and he realized that he loves his manager. Another balancing element for the romantic love stories. Their story is not that connected, but they are visible in some moments in the other stories. I didn't like it that well, too. But, what the heck. It's still good.

Oh yes, I really like the very short yet very notable appearance of Rowan Atkinson. He really rocks! What a great man, seriously.

There are many more connections here. What made this film even more exciting is the link among the characters. This is a really enjoyable one. The actors were all great. This film is rich with characters with varying wonderful personalities. Most of the love stories ended happily. And again, to balance things off, some didn't exactly ended the way others did. This a really remarkable film. I'm glad I saw this. It made me feel good a lot. It showed the different angles of love.

Love may be in the form of a father and son. Love may be seen in friends. Love could possibly break the language barrier. Love could put together a Prime Minister and a simple staffer. Love can satisfy the heart's deepest hopes. Love could always let go and move on for the sake of others. Love can be found in the most unlikely places. Love can be seen in children. Love stays with the aging ones. Love...is actually all around.

Marvel's The Avengers
I saw this on my 17th birthday (by the way, its first day on the cinemas was on my birthday- April 25) and it made me realize that seeing a movie on my special day is always a good idea. I'm not very fond of its screenplay but what the hell? It's an action film that's filled with absolute fun, laughter and pure entertainment. The actors were really good. Downey is undoubtedly a marvel and I thought that he would kind of overshadow the rest of the cast. Amazingly, he didn't because all the superheroes were given equal regards and I find it nice. However, I must say that I'm most impressed with Ruffalo as he had this pretty tough task to fill in the shoes of Edward Norton and he did it very well. Chris Evans was very, very charming. The Avengers is one ass-kicking treat that you must not miss.

Little Manhattan 2005,  PG)
Little Manhattan
Little Manhattan is not your ordinary story about love and perhaps a very realistic tale about first romance. It's really cute and sweet. It is slightly reminiscent of (500) Days of Summer for me. Honestly, I already fell in love with it even before it reached its first minute. Like most of the films that captured my heart, Little Manhattan's beauty is beyond words, too. Sometimes, a motion picture can be very simple and still manage to be a true marvel. I now have a new addition to my favorites.

Little Miss Sunshine
Little Miss Sunshine is a kind of jewel you rarely come across. Everything was flawless most especially the screenplay and the acting. I saw Paul Dano in There Will Be Blood and I must say that he's a really talented actor. Kudos to Abigail Breslin for such a brilliant performance at a very young age. The rest of the cast were all very good. What's amazing about this film is that all the ironies made me occasionally smile, and those did not simply bring about entertainment but also realizations. If you miss this film, you miss half of your life.
