Taken 2009,  PG-13)
Great action movie, good plot, and Liam Neeson kicked some serious scum ass. Better than the Bourne movies even.
Angels & Demons 2009,  PG-13)
Angels & Demons
Like the book, slightly better than Da Vinci Code. A word to the casting director however, casting Felipe from Three's Company as one of the cardinals was not the most brilliant move. My friend and I couldn't stop laughing about that one!
I Love You, Man 2009,  R)
I Love You, Man
A cute, and very funny movie. Great chemistry amongst the whole cast.
City Island 2010,  PG-13)
City Island
This dysfunctional family comedy turned into something quite good.
The Proposal 2009,  PG-13)
The Proposal
Pretty standard romantic comedy, starting out silly and annoying and slowly developing into something cute and emotive. I thought Reynolds and Bullock had good chemistry together. Oscar Nunez was great.
Balls Out: Gary the Tennis Coach 2008,  R)
Balls Out: Gary the Tennis Coach
Seann William Scott is always funny. Though some of the humor was a bit crude, overall this was cute.
Adventureland 2009,  R)
A good teen comedy with some great 80's music. The strength of this is definitely the cast - all of them.
Sin Nombre 2009,  R)
Sin Nombre
A very well-made and well-acted story giving a fresh perspective to the tribulations immigrants endure. This reminded me somewhat of City of God in its grittiness. Cary Fukunaga is a force to be reckoned with.
Underworld: The Rise of the Lycans 2009,  R)
Underworld: The Rise of the Lycans
After being disappointed by the highly-anticipated 2nd movie, this one returns to the strong storyline and grittiness of the first one. My only complaint is the overuse of crappy cgi-based fight scenes.
Brothers 2009,  R)
Despite some corny use of U2 music and a relatively weak script, the excellent cast and message keep this above mediocrity. Bailee Madison in particular was amazingly believable in her role of the sensitive older sister.
Couples Retreat 2009,  PG-13)
Couples Retreat
Moderately cute, but no really funny moments.
Funny People 2009,  R)
Funny People
Had it kept with the "life-threatening illness/let's learn a lesson here" theme it would've been ok. But it just got weird at the end and, overall, was not very funny at all.
Orphan 2009,  R)
This movie fails to fully take advantage of the awesome twist at the end and, thus, is purely mediocre. Aryana Engineer, who is truly hearing-impaired, was adorable. Isabelle Fuhrman did a great job in the titular role. As for dipshit Danny...I hope he died.
500 Days of Summer 2009,  PG-13)
500 Days of Summer
Whie I usually like both actors, and I thought the latter part of the movie was good, overall I found this annoying and pretentious.
Inglourious Basterds 2009,  R)
Inglourious Basterds
I spent the entire 2 1/2 hours having faith that Tarantino would end the movie in typical stylish fashion. When Shosanna shoots Frederick, only to be blown away during her moment of apparent epiphany, followed by the climactic theater scene, I thought - this is classic Tarantino. But I should've known, being that he hasn't made a good movie since Jackie Brown, that I would be let down. His turning of Hans into an American-worshipping, unsuspecting pansy at the end who is summarily dispatched by the dishonarable Aldo was just awful. Quentin, go back to selling videos instead of making them.
A Serious Man 2009,  R)
A Serious Man
This did nothing to raise the Coen Brothers in my esteem.
Cold Souls 2009,  PG-13)
Cold Souls
Sort of a cross between Eternal Sunshine and Being John Malkovich - just nowhere near as good as either. I didn't care much for the abrupt ending.
The Informant! 2009,  R)
The Informant!
While I appreciate the subtle humor this story presents, I'm not sure that a dark comedy was the best way to deliver this material.
Confessions of a Shopaholic 2009,  PG)
Confessions of a Shopaholic
Despite my better judgment, I couldn't help but get a bit teary-eyed at times and overall found this to be cute and enchanting. A very likeable cast and good soundtrack complete the wardrobe.
Black Dynamite 2009,  R)
Black Dynamite
Just like Kung Pow did for kung fu, Black Dynamite provides a good homage/parody to blaxploitation.
Freeway Killer 2010,  R)
Freeway Killer
This was not a bad movie at all. Scott Leet was excellent in the titular role.
The Men Who Stare at Goats 2009,  R)
The Men Who Stare at Goats
Just about as dumb as it sounds, though the ending was somewhat redeeming.
The Girlfriend Experience 2009,  R)
The Girlfriend Experience
Not bad; feels like a documentary at times, but it is well shot and directed. Interesting insight into the life of a high-class escort, but it is a tad on the boring side.
Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian 2009,  PG)
Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian
There were a couple funny moments, but mostly it was just silly. The ending was cute though.
A Perfect Getaway 2009,  R)
A Perfect Getaway
This movie thought itself cute and clever when, in reality, it was just stupid and nonsensical. One review I read said they actually got angry at David Twohy for having wasted their time and that they would never watch one of his movies again. I completely echo that sentinment.
Paper Heart 2009,  PG-13)
Paper Heart
All right; kinda cute. I discovered a liking for Michael Cera.
Winter of Frozen Dreams 2009,  R)
Winter of Frozen Dreams
This had the feel of a simple story that someone wanted to stetch into a feature-length film. The non-linear storyline was sometimes a bit hard to follow as well since the directing was subpar.
Sherlock Holmes 2009,  PG-13)
Sherlock Holmes
Let's take a classic cerebral character and fashion an action movie around him - complete with, but thankfully not totally reliant on, crappy CGI. As much as I like each of them, Downey and Law are miscast. And Guy Ritchie has always been totally overrated. It was not a complete waste of time, but I will not be lining up to see any sequels.
Eugene 2009,  Unrated)
This got fairly interesting at the end.
The Joneses 2010,  R)
The Joneses
Annoying cast, annoying story. annoying script, annoying directing, annoying soundtrack. Yes, this was just plain annoying; though I did like the end.
Weather Girl 2009,  R)
Weather Girl
A dearth of likeable characters and an overall pathetic nature kept this from brightening my day.
I Love You Beth Cooper 2009,  PG-13)
I Love You Beth Cooper
This was mostly painful to watch.
Night Train 2009,  R)
Night Train
This started off interesting enough, but that didn't last for long as it got way too silly and stayed that way for the remainder, lamely setting itself up for a sequel.
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra 2009,  PG-13)
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra
A bit better than I expected. The action scenes and technological gadgets partially offset the terrible acting, weak writing, and horrid casting. By the last half hour or so though I almost completely lost track of the storyline I was so caught up in Mystery Science Theatering it's ass. If I had to take a drink for every bad one-liner Ana uttered, every change in accent Destro delivered, and every jaw clench Duke displayed I would be dead.
Oral Fixation 2009,  Unrated)
Oral Fixation
Not a bad little thriller.
The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past 2009,  PG-13)
The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past
Where the Wild Things Are 2009,  PG)
Where the Wild Things Are
I have fond memories of reading the book as a kid but, being that I really don't remember much of it, I'm wondering: was Max always such a weenie with so many issues?? I couldn't stand the pretentious soundtrack, nor Spike Jonze's directing. From what I recall, the book was short and sweet in presenting its symbolism; this was long and rambling. I found myself constantly watching the clock waiting for this to be over, and it was not soon enough.
Messengers 2: The Scarecrow 2009,  R)
Messengers 2: The Scarecrow
Yet another poorly conceived horror.
The Hangover 2009,  R)
The Hangover
Absolutely and utterly stupid. The rapist undertones rampant throughout the movie were appalling.
Manson, My Name Is Evil 2009,  R)
Manson, My Name Is Evil
Thankfully this was short because it was just not very good.
Astro Boy (AstroBoy) 2009,  PG)
Astro Boy (AstroBoy)
I'm guessing the comic/Japanese original is better than this Disnefied piece of crap. The only saving grace is the awesome animation.
Witchmaster General 2009,  Unrated)
Witchmaster General
Kinda funny at times but mostly just silly.
Frankenhood 2009,  R)
Silly, but entertaining. Good tunes.
Infestation 2008,  R)
This was just too silly.
Crazy Animal 2007,  Unrated)
Crazy Animal
This is bad b-movie fare but also just a touch endearing for its uniqueness.
Perrier's Bounty 2010,  Unrated)
Perrier's Bounty
If I see one more played and pretentious English/Irish gangster film I think I may scream...
Metropia 2010,  Unrated)
The Moby-like main character and Juliette Lewis' annoying voice only added to the pain of watching this prententious crap.
Sorority Row 2009,  R)
Sorority Row
This movie is just plain baaad.
American High School 2009,  R)
American High School
Lives up to everything I've seen about it being one of the worst movies in history.
