Movies of 2000
what a really shaky year for film. there werent many landmark films at all, and comedies this year were especially weak. this is the list of my favorites of the year in order.

O Brother, Where Art Thou? 2000, PG-13)
absolutely sensational. this is perfect movie making at its best. the entire film the only thought that kept going through my mind was on how well this film was made. deakins cinematography was beyond genius, the script was amazing, and the performances were perfect for the characters. the scene in the town hall near the end was one of the best scenes of any film ever made, and the twists that the coens gave to the odyssey were creative and well designed. above all, not enough can be said about the soundtrack. throwing in a character based on blues legend robert johnson was also a stroke of genius. another near masterpiece by the coen bros. |

The Legend of Drunken Master (Jui kuen II) (Drunken Fist II) 1994, R)
the first time i saw this film i liked it, the second time ive fallen in love with it. this film is about so much more than the kung fu, which was great, but the stunts in this film are incredibly impressive. the things chan is able to pull off are mind blowing, and the fact that everything needed to be timed so perfectly with so many other performers shows the artistic and difficult nature of the action. one of the most prolifically planned martial arts films ever. |

Dora-Heita (Alley Cat) (Playboy) 2000, Unrated)
definitely one of the more american influenced samurai films, feeling like a blend of classic samurai drama and beverly hills cop, this film intrigue's from the first moment and never lets up. solid performances, great screen writing, and a wonderful story make this one of my favorite samurai films. the music was my only real complaint. directed by the legendary kon ichikawa and written by four of the greatest directors in history, including my favorite director akira kurosawa, this seldom sighted samurai film is a classic. |

Shanghai Noon 2000, PG-13)
just about everything about this film is likeable. it has some solid stunt work, funny scenes, likeable characters, and a really good story for a buddy cop/western/martial arts piece. sure its typical of these kinds of films in many ways, but its one of the funnest films out there, so i overrate it simply for the enjoyment factor. |

The Patriot 2000, R)
really good movie. a little overhyped and some of the content is questionable in terms of accuracy, but the action was very good and the family dynamic draws you into what it might have been like for families during the revolution. you really get touched by his relationship with his kids, especially his youngest daughter. |

Finding Forrester 2000, PG-13) |

Requiem for a Dream 2000, R)
such a difficult film to digest. the construction of the film was nearly perfect. aronofsky made excellent choices on direction style, and the subject matter could not have been handled better. the film was built like an 80's horror flick, and our villain was drug abuse. the hard part about a film like this is that i cant walk away from it thinking "wow i cant wait to see that again". the film couldnt have been made any better but it still suffers from being what it is. overall, great film. |

X-Men 2000, PG-13)
my feelings on this film have descended as the years have gone on. i still have fun watching this film, but with the culmination of the trilogy this once great comic book film looses its luster. the trilogy ended so poorly that it accentuates the flaws of this film in character development, style, and storyline. still a lot of fun, but i wish things had been done a bit differently. |

George Washington 2000, Unrated)
this is a really good movie. deep and profound, this film chronicles the stories of confused kids that appear to be looking for nothing, when really they desire a salvation that they think they have to earn. this film blends heart breaking drama and hilarious humor perfectly, making me laugh out loud one moment only to be haunted by the harsh realities of life the next. george is my hero. |

Space Cowboys 2000, PG-13)
not without its cliches and the acting and dialogue were a bit weak, but the story gives the audience so much to root for that the film succeeds almost by sentiment alone. some of the space images were subtle and awe inspiring, and the story flowed well enough to keep the audience into it. solid overall. |
