  1. sanjurosamurai
  2. danny

what a really shaky year for film. there werent many landmark films at all, and comedies this year were especially weak. this is the list of my favorites of the year in order.

1
Unbreakable 2000,  PG-13)
Unbreakable
helps you see what super powers might look like in reality. a story that teaches us that all people have an untapped potential that most of us ignore completely. when we find our gifts, we can do great things. must see.

O Brother, Where Art Thou? 2000,  PG-13)
O Brother, Where Art Thou?
absolutely sensational. this is perfect movie making at its best. the entire film the only thought that kept going through my mind was on how well this film was made. deakins cinematography was beyond genius, the script was amazing, and the performances were perfect for the characters. the scene in the town hall near the end was one of the best scenes of any film ever made, and the twists that the coens gave to the odyssey were creative and well designed. above all, not enough can be said about the soundtrack. throwing in a character based on blues legend robert johnson was also a stroke of genius. another near masterpiece by the coen bros.
3
The Emperor's New Groove 2000,  G)
The Emperor's New Groove
underrated, a really good animated movie, funny for adults appropriate for kids. one of my favorite disney movies ever.
4
The Legend of Drunken Master (Jui kuen II) (Drunken Fist II) 1994,  R)
The Legend of Drunken Master (Jui kuen II) (Drunken Fist II)
the first time i saw this film i liked it, the second time ive fallen in love with it. this film is about so much more than the kung fu, which was great, but the stunts in this film are incredibly impressive. the things chan is able to pull off are mind blowing, and the fact that everything needed to be timed so perfectly with so many other performers shows the artistic and difficult nature of the action. one of the most prolifically planned martial arts films ever.
5
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Wo hu cang long) 2003,  PG-13)
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Wo hu cang long)
after my first viewing in quite some time im reminded of this films brilliance. absolutely devastating choreography, a wonderful story, and awe inspiring art direction and cinematography. one of the best martial arts pictures ever filmed.
6
Dora-Heita (Alley Cat) (Playboy) 2000,  Unrated)
Dora-Heita (Alley Cat) (Playboy)
definitely one of the more american influenced samurai films, feeling like a blend of classic samurai drama and beverly hills cop, this film intrigue's from the first moment and never lets up. solid performances, great screen writing, and a wonderful story make this one of my favorite samurai films. the music was my only real complaint. directed by the legendary kon ichikawa and written by four of the greatest directors in history, including my favorite director akira kurosawa, this seldom sighted samurai film is a classic.
7
Shanghai Noon 2000,  PG-13)
Shanghai Noon
just about everything about this film is likeable. it has some solid stunt work, funny scenes, likeable characters, and a really good story for a buddy cop/western/martial arts piece. sure its typical of these kinds of films in many ways, but its one of the funnest films out there, so i overrate it simply for the enjoyment factor.
8
The Beach 2000,  R)
The Beach
fantastic. leo was great and some of the scenes were shot very well
9
Remember the Titans 2000,  PG)
Remember the Titans
classic sports flick, denzel is really good
10
Gladiator 2000,  R)
Gladiator
the battle scenes are genius
11
The Patriot 2000,  R)
The Patriot
really good movie. a little overhyped and some of the content is questionable in terms of accuracy, but the action was very good and the family dynamic draws you into what it might have been like for families during the revolution. you really get touched by his relationship with his kids, especially his youngest daughter.
12
Finding Forrester 2000,  PG-13)
Finding Forrester
partially inspired by salinger, connery's performance was wonderful and the screenplay was stellar. this is the film that put me on to writing.
13
Requiem for a Dream 2000,  R)
Requiem for a Dream
such a difficult film to digest. the construction of the film was nearly perfect. aronofsky made excellent choices on direction style, and the subject matter could not have been handled better. the film was built like an 80's horror flick, and our villain was drug abuse. the hard part about a film like this is that i cant walk away from it thinking "wow i cant wait to see that again". the film couldnt have been made any better but it still suffers from being what it is. overall, great film.
14
X-Men 2000,  PG-13)
X-Men
my feelings on this film have descended as the years have gone on. i still have fun watching this film, but with the culmination of the trilogy this once great comic book film looses its luster. the trilogy ended so poorly that it accentuates the flaws of this film in character development, style, and storyline. still a lot of fun, but i wish things had been done a bit differently.
15
The Ladies Man 2000,  R)
The Ladies Man
one of the 2 or 3 funniest movies ever made, but just too crude to justify
16
What Women Want 2000,  PG-13)
What Women Want
great romantic comedy, one of the best. the entire movie was a 4 1/2 star film until the last 5 minutes which really lower the overall score. something happens at the end that really doesnt make any sense whatsoever, but most of the film was fantastic.
17
Titan A.E. 2000,  PG)
Titan A.E.
great, i loved the story and the animation
18
The Family Man 2000,  PG-13)
The Family Man
i just gave this a second viewing, the first being 7 years ago when this came out, and either i forgot how good it was or my taste has changed because it was much better than i remember. this scrooge style story was touching and funny. it made me want to be a better father and husband. good stuff.
19
Keeping the Faith 2000,  PG-13)
Keeping the Faith
very funny
20
The Whole Nine Yards 2000,  R)
The Whole Nine Yards
very clever and funny, just stay away from the second one
21
George Washington 2000,  Unrated)
George Washington
this is a really good movie. deep and profound, this film chronicles the stories of confused kids that appear to be looking for nothing, when really they desire a salvation that they think they have to earn. this film blends heart breaking drama and hilarious humor perfectly, making me laugh out loud one moment only to be haunted by the harsh realities of life the next. george is my hero.
22
The Legend of Bagger Vance 2000,  PG-13)
The Legend of Bagger Vance
completely absurd, but a guilty pleasure of mine. smith and damon played off of each other so well and theron has never been sexier in a film, really a silly but fun movie.
23
Almost Famous 2000,  R)
Almost Famous
a film that gets a bit silly at moments but provides some great introspection and clever moments. the music is great and the characters are played well. a solid film.
24
Me, Myself & Irene 2000,  R)
Me, Myself & Irene
renee z looks like shes sucking on a lemon
25
Space Cowboys 2000,  PG-13)
Space Cowboys
not without its cliches and the acting and dialogue were a bit weak, but the story gives the audience so much to root for that the film succeeds almost by sentiment alone. some of the space images were subtle and awe inspiring, and the story flowed well enough to keep the audience into it. solid overall.
26
Vertical Limit 2000,  PG-13)
Vertical Limit
pretty good in a corny way
27
What Lies Beneath 2000,  PG-13)

Mission To Mars
Don Cheadle should have run from this movie.
53
The Skulls 2000,  PG-13)

good concept, terrible cast and acting
