Gosh, I really hoped this would be much better, because what more does one need from life than a Tim Burton/Johnny Depp/Helena Bonham Carter/Danny Elfman collaboration?

But. It was disappointing. I know a little bit about the original series (haven't seen it though) and feel as though this movie didn't do is justice. The movie wasn't well-balanced. Was it a Gothic horror story? A romantic comedy? A satire of both genres?

The characters weren't presented wholly enough, and despite the great performances and truly fantastic cast, the film bordered on ridiculousness.

And the ending fully destroyed the movie for me - I was enjoying it before that, and the atmosphere and direction/cinematography/soundtrack/make-up/costumes were exquisite. But as an overall Tim Burton achievement...a disappointment.

Chloe Moretz is an actress that appeared out of nowhere and started appearing everywhere. I personally admire her and would watch her in pretty much anything.

Hick was a movie (a book?) that "borrowed" elements from a lot of other movies and compiled them into one big mediocre thing. It was monotonous, tiring, and leaves you with nothing by the end. The direction was forced, but careless at the same time (the vertical shots of the actors talking were so forced, while the in-car shots so careless).

A rather vain movie that tried to shock without quite getting there. It's only worth it for its performances (Eddie Redmayne for the win), its nostalgia and its narration.
