The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
Just when you think you've said goodbye to Middle Earth for good, it comes back to you with what is sure to be of the same terrific quality as the Lord of The Rings films. Sure, Peter Jackson may no longer be the director, but from what I've gathered, he is involved enough for us fans to be able to breathe a sigh of relief. Besides, Guillermo Del Toro is almost as fantastic of an director, and does respect the source material, so I think it's fair to say that this movie won't disappoint. I'm still kind of worried about how "The Hobbit 2" will turn out though, as it will not be directly based on any of Tolkien's novels, but rather something of Jackson's and Del Toro's own creation. But ah well, the more we get from that dream team the better, because at least they know how to do fantasy the right way.

Don't fix what ain't broken. Five words that summarizes the idea of this reboot. Granted that Spiderman 3 was a real letdown, but I just don't think it'll be the same without Raimi and McGuire. Oh well, I guess only time will tell.

Love the first two, so let's hope they don't screw this one up. Glad it's the same director, but I'm not too fond of the whole "pass the torch" thing. I'll definitely be watching it either way though.

Marvel's The Avengers 2012,  PG-13)
Marvel's The Avengers
Joss Whedon's epic superhero spectacle is everything I could have ever hoped it to be and more! Where most directors would settle for a run-of-the-mill money-maker, Whedon has gone beyond our collective dreams, pouring all his heart, soul and talent into a creation that can only be described as a godly entity of the comic book world. It's to Marvel's great universe what The Dark Knight is to DC's. An all-around stellar achievement, that brings out the best of all its characters, with great humor, warmth and phenomenally directed action. I mean, I knew it would be good, but I wasn't quite ready for this thoroughly mind-blowing experience.

Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johanssen and all the rest - there's not a performance in here that isn't absolutely smashing (quite literally in The Hulk's case). And what amazing chemistry between the lot, if not to rank it as utter perfection! The way they work together as a team, poking fun at each other's differences while uniting their various strengths in bona fide comradery, makes not only for grandiose entertainment, but also scenes of pure poignancy, when the common cause leaps into true friendship, involving audacious derring-dos and heart-gripping sacrifice.

Action-wise, it's a real powerhouse as well. I have seen some breath-taking battles through the years, but nothing could have prepared me for the awesome showdown of the film's monolithic third act. State-of-the-art visuals, coupled with an incredibly thrilling soundtrack and edge-of-your-seat suspense, leaves you with minimal room to catch your breath and goosebumps so frequent, it feels like the bumps on your skin are gonna stay permanently in that state. Additionally, the film boasts a strikingly cool villain, in the form of the powerful demi-god Loki, played with intensity and malice by a terrific Tom Hiddleston.

Easily the best film of the year so far and an extraordinarily stunning crowd-pleaser, that will have you laughing, applauding and overwhelmed with all possible emotions. And that's just to give the sum of it. In the details dwells so much more, and a movie so wealthy in excitement, that you never want it to end.

Blockbusters as fantastic as these only come out once every 5 years or so, and it's definitely gonna give Prometheus and The Dark Knight Rises a run for its money. An auteur's vision realized; filled to the brim with fireworks for the eyes and intellect alike. Yet no words can truly it do justice. Like the great arts and wonders of the world, you just have to see and experience it for yourself.

Battleship 2012,  PG-13)
Battleship
Big-budget special effects: Check! Patriotic cheese: Check! A script full of holes and nonsense, that yet somehow manages to be entertaining? Yup, that's a check on that too! This is a movie designed for all the Transformers fans out there, with all the good and bad that comes with it. A flag-waving love letter to the U.S. Navy, that at times will make you cringe, but for the most part works as servicable fun. You'll probably not be surprised to hear that it's strong points are chiefly found within its technical elements. Top-of-the-line SFX and an excitement-boosting soundtrack (it's a cliché to throw in, but ACDC's "Thunderstruck" just never gets old), elevates the experience in typical Hollywood fashion. But is it worth your hard-earned money? I would say yes, though I can very much sympathize with those who are at a demand for more substance. Question marks are raised throughout, and no matter how much I try to make sense of things, it's impossible to come to any sort of logical conclusion. For example, if the aliens can create force fields around a mile-wide section of water, why not implement the same technology around their own ships as well? Or this really preposterous scene, where a stereotypically nerdy science guy (don't ask me to remember his name) runs into an alien-infested camp, grabs a valuable case, is discovered, but the alien neither makes any decent attempt to stop him, nor chases after him. I mean, what gives? All stupidity aside though, I really enjoyed it on the whole. Very hit-and-miss perhaps, but you can't really expect too much of a movie based on a pen-and-paper game. An eye-popping action spectacle, that keeps itself afloat thanks to an agreeable cast (you can never go wrong with Liam Neeson) and its bombastic, big-scale battles. Rihanna ain't too bad either in her movie screen debut. Not the most developed of roles, but she does the job sufficiently. So to summarize: A solid popcorn flick, that may not offer anything new, but is good while it lasts if you can endure the aforementioned misfires.

John Carter
John Carter begs the question: Where did all the money go? It certainly wasn't spent on the screenplay, that's for sure. And with a gargantuan budget of $250,000,000, you'd think the visual effects would look a little better. I've seen films that have done far more with less than half of those sums. No wonder it became such a huge fiasco at the box-office.

Placing Taylor Kitsch in lead wasn't such wise move either. Granted that he doesn't have a lot to work with, but he lacks both the appeal and charisma to really carry a film like this by himself. In the supporting cast it looks a little brighter though, including as many as three of the stars from HBO's Rome - one of my personal favourites in the TV realm. Again, however, they are served mere scraps and bones of dialogue, in a very watered-down story.

It isn't a complete and total failure though; on the whole its quite entertaining and thought they did a really good job with the creature- and production design. I bet George Lucas would love this film; particularily as it more or less borrows the whole Geonosis arena battle from "Attack of the Clones". It's an unmistakable parallel, that is impossible not to draw.

How sad though to see such an epic squandering of time, talent and money. Director Andrew Stanton, who have previously given us delightful adventures like Wall-E and Finding Nemo, makes a flawed and bumpy transition from animation to live-action. Maybe pressure from Disney is to blame, I don't know, but this soulless overload of blue-screens and CGI, doesn't even remotely resemble the warm and heartfelt features from Pixar studios. Not bad altogether, just grievously, inexplicably and spectacularly average.

Red Tails
There was a time when I associated LucasArts with the most pristine and spellbinding of cinematic magic. Three less-than-stellar prequels later, however, the name just doesn't glow anymore with the same awe-inspiring intensity. Unfortunately, "Red Tails" is no exception to that fact. For as much as the trailers encouraged me to see it, the reality of the full experience isn't quite as stimulating.

To be fair though, it's a solid enough WWII piece. The story per se, about a crew of African-American pilots, who are pitted against the Axis powers and racial bigotry alike, is one that still holds meaning in our ever-going social struggles. We may have come a long way since the 1940's, but prejudice remains nonetheless a very relevant issue.

Where things go a bit amiss is in the execution and writing. Not that it's downright bad, but it lacks a sense of authenticity and fails to propel itself beyond genericness. Decent acting overall, but often corny, wooden and short of memorable. This is especially true for the lame love story between one of the American pilots and a small town Italian girl. It was like watching Anakin and Padmé all over again.

There is one area, however, where it accumulates some shiny badges and that is, as you may have guessed, in the special effects department. Industrial Light and Magic have done a heck of a job, creating visually rousing air battles that are among the best and most bewildering I've ever had the pleasure to watch. Not unlike the Star Wars prequels, it's all very eye-popping, but also come with the same misfires, as in being largely devoid of substance.

As I was mainly in for the action, I can't say I was disappointed though. I suppose it all depends on what you're looking for. If amazing visuals is sufficient, it'll definitely still your cravings. But if you want something with a little more heart behind it, I suggest you watch a movie like "Glory" instead, which builds on a similar true story, but includes better-handled emotional gravitas.

For when all is said and done, "Red Tails" is undeniably a superficial affair. Entertaining and worth a rent, but just be sure you know in advance what you're getting yourself into. Because apart from the cutting-edge aerial battles, there's probably nothing in here that you haven't seen or encountered before.

The Darkest Hour
Generic and shallow, though moderately entertaining overall and not quite as bad as they've made it out to be. Nevertheless, it's sad to see actor Emile Hirsch go from a top-class indie like Into the Wild, to something as mundane as this. At least his acting is somewhat decent though, compared to that of, let's say, Joel Kinnaman. I know I should be happy that one of my countrymen has made it into Hollywood, but it's a struggle when he supplies one of the film's most insecure and downright lousy performances. I shudder at the thought of him playing Robocop in the upcoming (and supremely unnecessary) re-make. I smell a Robo-flop! Apart from said malady, we're also forced to endure a good number of plot holes and illogical character actions. Deficiencies which made it like the intellectual brother of the equally soulless Skyline. Don't lose heart by these words, however, for it's not all cons and misfires. It does have a couple of virtues that makes it worthwhile in the long run. One is the fact that it's set in Moscow, which may not have the same excitement factor as that of New York and Los Angeles, but I thought it added a touch of freshness, to a genre in dire need of it. And however ridiculous the writing may be, I can't say it ever bored me. Sure, it's a bunch of stupid teens running about like headless chickens, but that doesn't mean it can't be entertaining. A poor man's take on War of the Worlds, but at least the alien invaders wasn't just another version of "The Greys" - they actually have some originality to their design. Just a shame it had to end on such an anticlimactic note; setting things up for sequel that will probably never come. Or if it does, it'll be straight to the DVD discount bin. Still, it could have been a lot worse.

Machine Gun Preacher
None have probably missed by now the "Kony 2012" campaign, that went viral all across the globe a couple of months ago. It made this film particularily interesting, as it's about an ex-conman who travels to Uganda to save some kids from Kony's clutches. Now the campaign per se may have been met by a lot of criticism (and rightly so, considering the scandal with Jason Russell and how they've spent people's donations), but the mission to bring down Kony and cease his crimes against humanity, is very compelling nevertheless.

I just wish they would have left out all the Christian propaganda in this film. It left a bad taste in the mouth, that subtracted from the overall appeal. In a sense though, it also puts the spotlight on the dark side of religion, in the way Kony uses it as an excuse to rape, mutilate, kidnap and murder. But it doesn't really merit the movie's message of finding Jesus as the solution to all of life's many problems.

Now, out of respect for my Christian friends, I'm not gonna delve any further into my general views of religion, but let's just say I got the same uncomfortable vibes as with the ending of the movie Knowing, where Nicolas Cage sends the blonde-haired children to Adam & Eve Land, in order to "salvage" the human race. I know Machine Gun Preacher is based on a true story and all, but I would have preferred a far more objective approach.

As a drama though, it works just fine, with a riveting story that has some real pathos at its core. One of the things that really saves it, is the sincere and commanding performance by a brilliant Gerard Butler. His frustrations and ambitions, heart and good will, makes it easy to sympathize with his character, even if the movie as a whole could have used a little more meat on its bones.

It's just a shame it had to be wrapped in such a self-righteous package. Because it took what could have been a great film and de-evolved it to a solid, albeit instantly forgettable biopic.

The Dictator
Sacha Baron Cohen strikes gold once again, in this outrageously funny comedy, about a North-African dictator who goes on a mission to the U.S, with the agenda to certify that democracy never comes within an inch of his oppressive regime. Things don't go quite according to plan, however, and he suddenly finds himself stripped of his power, title and flamboyant attire to boot. What follows is a hilarious turn of events, where he meets a girl named Zoey (played by a delightful Anna Faris) and tries to make his way back to his ruling position.

Based on a novel written by Saddam Hussein, it brilliantly spoofs the sort of insane and eccentric behavior that we've seen not only in Hussein and his sons, but also other infamous dictators like Kim Jong-Il and Idi Amin. Much like in Borat and Brüno it's very vulgar and unapologetic, yet never to the point where it crosses the line (not in my eyes at least). Personally, I love this type of politically incorrect humor, where nothing is holy and everything a target for Cohen's trademark-branded humor missiles.

Joke-wise, it isn't always spot-on, and there seems to be a lot of stuff in the trailers that didn't make it into the movie. But I suppose I'll just have to enjoy those when the Blu-ray comes out instead. For in the grand jihad of things, this was a side-splitting fun-fest and the best comedy I've seen all year. A laugh-a-minute parade of hysterically funny antics and perfectly delivered punchlines. You'll either love it or hate it, but to me this was nothing short of comedy gold!

21 Jump Street
Based on the classic TV show that ran in the late 80's, "21 Jump Street" is a striking success of a re-make, that delivers scene after scene of side-splitting fun! If I were to boil it down to its essentials, I'd say there are two prime elements to which its winning formula can be linked:

First of all, there's the wonderful self-distance. It knows it's a re-make and isn't shy to poke fun at itself. Whenever you think "cliché", it immediately hits you back with a witty remark, which adresses the very stereotype that occured to you. It's almost parodic in that sense, throwing around the type of gags and meta humor you might find in one of the "Naked Gun" flicks.

More than that, it's got a great and very funny script. Jonah Hill, who did an amazing slim-down for his role, displays superb rapport with Channing Tatum, as two underachieving cops, who are sent on an undercover mission to infiltrate a local high school, in an attempt of bringing down a synthetic drug ring. Hilarity ensues, and it's just pure enjoyment watching these two trying not to screw up their assignment.

Not since Leslie Nielsen's days as Lieutenant Frank Drebin have I seen a cop comedy this funny. A crackerjack laugh riot, that will have your smile muscles working overtime and then some! Without giving anything anyway, there's also a cool surprise in the end for fans of the original show. So be sure to stick around for that supremely awesome treat!

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island 2012,  PG)
Journey 2: The Mysterious Island
Very enjoyable adventure, based on the famous novel by Jules Verne, which was first published in 1874. This modern take on the story, features a troubled teenager (played by Josh Hutcherson, who reprises his role as Sean Anderson from "Journey to the Center of the Earth"), who receives a cryptic radio message from his grandfather, which leads him on a dangerous quest to find a mysterious island, which had previously been thought to be a mere place of legend.

Those unititated to Verne's tales may dismiss this as a knock-off on films like "Jurassic Park" and "King Kong", but that would hardly be fair as it's probably the latter that has been inspired by Verne's original work. But yes, it is clichéd and treads on familiar ground. That doesn't mean it can't be fun though, and compared to "Center of the Earth", I found this a notable improvement, with greater pacing, excitement and a more likeable cast.

Michael Caine as Sean's grandfather, is excellent as ever, adding his usual charm and and energy to the story. Particularily in his amusing interplay with Sean's stepdad Hank, who is solidly played by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. Vanessa Hudgens and Luis Guzmán are fairly amiable as well, though they add the least to the overall appeal of the film.

What makes it a pleasant ride, besides the nice visual elements and good doses of humor, is the island itself and all its strange and wonderful creatures. What's big in our world is small in theirs, and vice versa. A lush, colorful and paradise-like place, that hosts everything from gigantic bumblebees to miniature-sized elephants. A little uneven in the quality of the CGI, but neat nevertheless.

All in all, a worthy adaptation of Verne's original adventure. A movie for those who enjoy lighthearted, family-friendly escapist fare, but isn't too choosy about the writing or credibility of the plot. Goes well together with some popcorn and an open-minded attitude. Just watch it as your inner child would and you'll be amazed at how fast its 90 minutes fly by!

Gloves off, teeth flying, the crowd going wild! It's the game we all know as ice hockey, in all its brutally entertaining glory! So much more than mere testosterous interplay, however, in the hands of Canadian director Michael Dowse, who knows how to score home some major laughs and does so with finesse.

Sean William Scott, whom to me will always be "The Stiffmeister", plays a bouncer named Doug, who gets recruited to a hockey team, after opening a can of whoop-ass on a player who made the bad call of provoking him into a fight. There's only one little problem: he can't skate worth a damn! What he does have a knack for though is roughing up his opponents (and the occational team mate), which is enough to grant him and his buddies a genuine shot for the playoffs.

Jay Baruchel, who is also one of film's writers, is pretty fun as well, as a webshow host and friend of Doug's, who coaches him to success with some off-the-wall motivation. Liev Schreiber and Alison Pill add even more to its appeal, as Doug's older and more experienced counterpart, respectively cute love interest.

Having recently celebrated my home team winning the Swedish national hockey finals, this comedy couldn't have come at a more perfect time. It's crass, it's profane, yet never neglects you as a being of heart and sentience. A powerplay of good fun, that literally doesn't pull any punches and blasts the puck right through the net! But enough hockey analogies for one day. All you really need to know is that it's well worth a go!

Save for a couple of action movies and the work by Jean Pierre Jeunet, French cinema remains a territory that I'm yet to fully explore. To be frank, it's probably because its loquacious dramas seem a little outside my personal preference. Something about this film though really captured my interest, and I figured there had to be a good reason for it making into the IMDB Top 250. Gratefully, those presumptions proved valid. Because what writer-directors Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano has cooked up for us here, is an engaging true story, about a wheelchair-bound aristocrat (François Cluzet), who hires a young man from the ghetto (Omar Sy) to be his caretaker and personal assistant. Despite being from completely different worlds, they form a close and unlikely friendship, that is as touching as anything I've ever seen. Above all, however, it's an amazingly funny comedy, that base a great deal of its winning formula on the many culture clashes between the contrasting duo. They grow and develop together, taking lessons from each other's lives, while finding common ground through tragedy and humor alike. François Cluzet, who bears a spooky resemblance to Dustin Hoffman, is just as great as his American counterpart, and really gets into our hearts with his non-judgmental and open-minded demeanour. Omar Sy is superb as well, as the brusque and comically gifted Driss, who provide the biggest laughs in the film. A hilarious, uplifting and highly enjoyable gem of a picture, that deserves to be seen by a wider audience. Highly recommended!

Get the Gringo
Get the Gringo isn't a great film, but it is a sufficiently entertaining one that if anything illustrates that Mel Gibson - in spite of age and personal issues - can still hold his own as a veteran action star. To label this as a fully-fledged action movie is a bit of a stretch though. If you look to some of its promotional material, it implies a fast-faced plot and a plethora of bullet exchange. Essentially, however, it's a prison flick, where Gibson - who plays a career criminal who gets thrown into the joint after getting caught by the Mexican authorities - spends the better part of his time trying to survive the incarceration through the help of a young boy and his mother. The most interesting aspect of the story is the prison itself; the dirty, gritty atmosphere, which runs like a small society, with stores, housing and some inmates living with their families. In this regard, it's quite original, but it unfortunately doesn't compensate much for the the thin and water-treading script. Too often I found myself waiting for something exciting to happen, and when it finally does, it's very pedestrian in its execution. Adroit acting from Gibson makes it worthwhile though, and it's nice to see him back where he belongs again (not behind bars, but you know what I mean). A decent action-drama, with an agreeable touch of dark humor. Just not really the kind that I'd be in a hurry to watch again.
