The Deadly Mantis (The Giant Mantis)(The Incredible Praying Mantis)
Seismic activity in the southern hemisphere triggers vibrations at the arctic icecap, releasing a gigantic mantis religiosa that was frozen in the ice some 15 million years earlier. Pissed off and hungry, the enormous insect migrates south, taking out arctic radar stations, airplanes and even Eskimos along the way. As silly as this all sounds, it's really not half bad. Classic cold war sci-fi with just a touch of romance thrown in for good measure.

This is not your typical low-budget 50's sci-fi thriller. The effects here, with the possible exception of the final scene, are stunning. This is global Armageddon with style! Nostalgic, but still technologically impressive.

The Monolith Monsters (Monolith) 1957,  PG)
The Monolith Monsters (Monolith)
This has to be one of the oddest concepts to ever hit the silver screen. As a fan of alien invasion films, I've grown accustomed to having my space invaders with bulging eyes, spindle-like tentacles and nasty dispositions. Not so with The Monolith Monsters. Here, the threat comes in the form of dark crystals that grow large, topple over, and grow large again. Compared to other sci-fi offerings of the same era, this one's a little lame. There's not much to frighten or shock you here. These aren't creatures with malice of forethought. They are not sent here to destroy us, or even save us. They are rocks that will crush you if you're foolish enough to be anywhere near them when they fall over. I have to give Hollywood a measured amount of credit for at least attempting to give us something unique and unusual, even if it comes up a little short.

Cult of the Cobra 1955,  Unrated)
Cult of the Cobra
For a Universal Studios B-picture, this one isn't bad. It's about a group of American soldiers in "Asia" (the sets look like a cross between India and Morocco) who sneak into a secret snake ritual. One of the soldiers attempts a little flash photography and the group barely escapes with their lives. Soon afterward, the men return to the states and, one by one, they meet their demise under strange circumstances. *Note: Did anyone else notice the bizarre similarity between Cult of the Cobra (1955) and To Hell and Back (1955)? The two films have virtually the same cast (minus Audie Murphy of course). Marshall Thompson, Jack Kelly and David Janssen all play soldiers in both films. What an odd double feature this would be!

The Mole People
Ward Cleaver journeys to the center of the earth to do battle with a race of albinos living on mushrooms (I'm not kidding). This is science fiction at it's corny, campy best. I love this stuff (I'm not kidding).

*Kudos to the makeup and special effects artists at Universal Studios. Not once did I notice a single zipper.

Invaders from Mars 1953,  Unrated)
Invaders from Mars
The quintessential science-fiction film of the 1950s. Ripe with cold-war innuendo, Invaders from Mars has, in a sense, become a parody of itself. It's as if someone merged John Carpenter's The Thing with an old episode of Leave it to Beaver.

The She-Creature
An experiment in past life regression calls forth a scaley monster with enormous boobs. Evil Dr. Lombardi is able to use hypnosis to summon the breasted beast but good ole' handsome and kind 'Ted' steps in to save the day. The She-Creature is an old fashioned low budget schlock-fest best seen from the back seat of a Studebaker at your local drive-in.

The Brain Eaters (Keepers of the Earth) (The Brain Snatchers) 1958,  Unrated)
The Brain Eaters (Keepers of the Earth) (The Brain Snatchers)
One man's camp is another man's crap. An uber-low budget sci-fi thriller about low tech "insects" (hairballs with protruding pipe cleaners) who emerge from a mysterious metallic cone to turn unsuspecting humans into mindless slaves. Sort of a Invasion of the Body Snatchers meets The Trouble with Tribbles.

Forbidden Planet 1956,  G)
Forbidden Planet
For me, this is the quintessential sci-fi film, second only to 2001. It's got everything you'd ever want from a good science fiction classic. There is a menacing alien, ray guns, a space ship, the best robot ever to grace the silver screen (sorry C-3PO), and it's all set on a distant planet in a galaxy far, far away. Oh, and did I mention the beautiful damsel in distress (Anne Francis)? This is how William Shakespeare would do 'The Tempest', if he had grown up in the 50's reading Flash Gordon Comics and listening to 'Space Ranger' radio serials.

This Island Earth
Fifties sci-fi that's as cheesy as they come. Visitors from outer space recruit a couple of American scientists to assist in putting down an invasion of marauding intruders.
A masterpiece of low budget camp notable for it's two distinct types of aliens: the friendly, prominently foreheaded intellectuals and the lumbering, pincher-clawed Zahgons.

Red Planet Mars
Due to the elliptical nature of Mar's orbit, only rarely does it come close enough to Earth to afford a clear view of it's geography. When it does, supposedly in 1952, scientists notice that the huge ice mountains of the poles have been melted into water and channeled to large cities spread across the landscape, proving the existence of life on the red planet. Coincidentally, a remarkable invention known as the "Hydrogen Valve" has just been developed, enabling the sending of coded messages across the vast expanse of space. Now Earth can communicate with those industrious water channelers so very far away. But, the question is, what will they say? Will they end hunger, disease and misery on Earth? Will they advance our technology? Are they friendly? Could they be... possibly... Christians?!?!?

The discovery of a "prehistoric fish" in the waters off the coast of Madagascar proved to be enough fodder to inspire this obscure b-movie. Apparently, any contact with the fish's blood will force a creature to genetically alter itself back to it's evolutionary roots. A dog, for example, will revert back to a primitive wolf after ingesting the blood of the fish. A man, should he come in contact with prehistoric fish fluids, will transform into a murderous caveman who will kill attractive female lab assistants and hang them by their hair in trees because, as we all know, that's what cavemen do.

Okay, what if everyone had this tiny little caterpillar thing that lived in the base of their spine? And what if, every time they got scared, this caterpillar thing started to grow? And what if the only way to stop the caterpillar thing from growing was to scream real loud? And what if a mad scientist decided that he could prove the existence of the caterpillar thing by finding a mute lady and scaring her to death? And what if his experiment worked and he surgically removed a really big caterpillar thing from the dead woman's body? And what if that caterpillar thing got loose and started to kill people? And what if it turned out that the whole thing was just a movie? And what if you watched that movie with some friends and lots and lots of beer?

Tarantula is 50's sci-fi gold, complete with a giant guinea pig and a mysterious microphone that appears from time to time in the upper frame of certain scenes. Unless you suffer from severe arachnophobia, this is not a film that will cause you any sleepless nights. '50's sci-fi horror movie about a gelatinous mass of shapeless, carnivorous goo from outer space.

Besides being a cinematic cult classic, it's also a wonderful film for parents who are having difficulty teaching their children to not touch anything that looks nasty or sticky. "Don't touch that, it might be the blob" was all my Mom ever had to say to get me to leave things alone and undisturbed.
