They say it is a sort of European "Gran Torino", and, although I was skeptical, yeah, I could say that sentence is true. I will not forget this sentence: "he crossed 4,000 km to meet with his girlfriend, and I did not cross the street when you went away from me".
Amazing film that shows you that, before, Spaniards who were inmigrants had the same problems, circumstances and situations that the ones the now migrate to our countries. Similarities are so intense that they scare you... Some scenes are wonderful... Spaniards looking at toilets that use soft paper to clean yourself, and bathrooms in which cool and hot water go by different pipes; getting used to people that consider a bad education gesture to throw rubbish to floor... Problems to get adapted, also problems to get back, the things you loose at home, the temptations in the new country... Some sentences are strong as stones: "Aren´t you ashamed of stealing?, I´m sorry, but I had never seen so much of everything", "Have you rented your room to Spaniards, what are you thinking at?" You understand that there are not so many differences from then to now. As one of the characters say, "People is not bad. What is bad is misery".
Light comedy with a wonderful message of understanding among cultures. A pity it has not developed more the comic part (although is funny), and also falls a little too much in told-before-story-lines: with just a little effort, it would have been an unforgettable film. I got in love with the peruan group, they´re so lovely!
I expected much more from a movie with Iñarritu and Bardem. The movie has good intentions and talks about relevant social and familiar issues, but the narration has not great moments to attract the spectator, it's just a continuum of facts with no novelty or surprise. So publicized role from Bardem is OK, but the character is not as interesting as it is supposed (i even felt more surprised for some feminine characters). I mean, it is not that it´s a bad movie, it´s just not as good as I expected.
Although the good actings (particullarly Clive Owen, as consistent as usual, but also Caine and Julianne Moore), and the good start point, it doesn't offer much new and comes back to many topics from other dystopic, almost post-apocalyptic future stories... Some interesting things, you can watch it, but it is difficult that you get frankly amazed by this movie.
I had the good (or bad) luck of reading the great novel from Steinbeck before watching the movie. Of course, it is very difficult to reflect all the little details of a classic novel as "The grapes of wrath" in a movie. However, it is a faifhful adaptation, in which John Ford achieves a great characterization of the protagonist family (with interesting nuances for their personalities) and the material conditions in which they live (their car, about to die more than once, and the poor aspct of the camps they are living in), being these last ones visually shown even in a more lively way than in the book. The social compromise of the novel is expressed, and although the need to cut some parts from the original, some interesting additional details are added. In summary, very powerful dramatic scenes about the events around this family, with great actings. A pity that the original end of the book (one of the most powerful I have ever read) couldn't appear because of censorship codes of that time.
Includes a social drama, an intimal story with touchs of tenderness and also humour (even a very dark humour), and a not-expected twist that conditions all the movie. Fernando León does again a work that combines
