I've wanted to watch this movie for the longest time & I finally have - I must say it was amazing!!
Its a really touching, funny story with some beautiful performances. The kind of movie you're not likely to forget.
(Oh! & I keep saying "Buon giorno, Principessa! " - that line from this movie is stuck in my head lol).

Apocalypto 2006,  R)
Apocalypto
Absolutely compelling. In an industry that keeps churning out remakes, I found this to be very a refreshing movie that i'd highly recommend. Much better than Mel Gibson's Passion of the Christ aswell.

8
Forrest Gump 1994,  PG-13)

Probably Tom Hanks best movie, the story is sweet, funny & moving.
Excellent!

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas) 2008,  PG-13)
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas)
A very moving movie which brings you a child's perspective of war - in this case WWII.
On the surface the plot is very simple and yet completely heartbreaking at the same time - what an ending!
A unique film that is effective without being brutal so that children could watch this too.
10
Rabbit-Proof Fence 2002,  PG)
Rabbit-Proof Fence
Good movie .. Simple yet informative and effective.
11
Gladiator 2000,  R)
Gladiator
I'm not a big Russel Crowe fan but I must say he seemed to be made for this part.
I never wanted to see this film but I finally watched it the other day and I'm glad I did - its a great story, well acted and thouroughly enjoyable - even the sad parts!!

My Life in Pink (Ma Vie en Rose) 1997,  R)
My Life in Pink (Ma Vie en Rose)
Interesting and sweet french movie - it tells the tale of an adorable little boy who thinks he is or should have been born a girl and shows how his family try to deal with the situation.
The imagery in this is beautiful and there are some touching scenes too. Brilliant!

The Silence of the Lambs 1991,  R)
The Silence of the Lambs
I love this movie.. its one of those I can watch over and never get bored.

Tsotsi (Thug) 2005,  R)
Tsotsi (Thug)
I thought this was truly poignant.
One of the best foreign movies I've seen, some scenes I thought were a little hard to watch - but you gain a feeling of aspiration/hopefulness as the story moves along.
17
The Fall 2006,  R)
The Fall
Really glad I watched this - the story really draws you in and it's lovely visually. Similar to a child's fairytale only with a more grown-up theme.
I adored Catinca Untaro - the child actress in this, her friendship with actor Lee Pace throughout the movie was brilliant.
Well worth watching.
18
Far and Away 1992,  PG-13)
19
American History X 1998,  R)
American History X
One of the most evocative movies I've ever seen ~ nearly every scene in this movie has such power behind it and tells a very disturbing yet moving story.
Edward Norton was superb as the hate-fuelled racist who gets a serious wake-up call.
20
The Notebook 2004,  PG-13)
The Notebook
How sad is this movie?! - I thought the chemistry between Ryan Gosling & Rachel McAdams was very believable. The story has a classic romance feel to it and I got swept along with the characters.
Beautifully told & one I'd watch again.

American Beauty 1999,  R)
American Beauty
Really like this film. So much going on in it.
If you haven't seen it yet - get hold of a copy.
22
Crash 2005,  R)
Crash
Brilliant movie - one that 'makes you think'.
23
Run Lola Run (Lola rennt) 1998,  R)
Run Lola Run (Lola rennt)
Really inventive movie with its choice of endings. I wasn't too keen on the animated sequences but the story was quite captivating & the soundtrack keeps the adrenaline in the plot pumping too.
24
Gran Torino 2008,  R)
Gran Torino
Cracking performance from Clint Eastwood - I like the fact that he enabled his character to never compromise his temperament yet still have the ability to do good by the very people he acts like he doesn't care for.
Incredibly watchable as the story unfolds and a great ending too.
25
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind 2004,  R)
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind
A brilliant thought-provoker - very trippy (from the creator of 'Being John Malkovich' so it has the same kind of filming style) - so be prepared to focus if your thinking of watching this.
Loved the quirkiness & it pulls on the heart-strings too.
26
Little Red Flowers (Kan shang qu hen mei) 2005,  Unrated)
27
Monster's Ball 2001,  R)
28
Amistad 1997,  R)
Amistad
A powerful court-room drama with some hard-to-watch scenes, this movie is somewhat a history lesson about the slave-trade.
Great movie with good performances, especially from Djimon Hounsou.
29
Slumdog Millionaire 2008,  R)
Slumdog Millionaire
I'm going to join the hype with this movie.
Brilliantly filmed & told story.. it has realistic drama, is really funny in places aswell as a being a love story. Hard to believe the kids in this film had never acted before - they were fantastic to watch.
Just a beautifully shot & uplifting (overall) tale - I would recommend this if you haven't seen it yet.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button 2008,  PG-13)
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Lovely both visually and by way of story-telling. The aging effects are really good too. The film is similar to Forrest Gump, very touching and sweet with a little comedy thrown in .. but I'd say less adventurous!
Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett are very impressive in this - I realized towards the ending that they have very good on-screen chemistry.
At over 2 & a half hours long this is bum-numbing but I came away still thinking about the story - so well worth the watch.

The Story of the Weeping Camel 2003,  PG)

The Sixth Sense 1999,  PG-13)

This Is England 2006,  Unrated)
This Is England
A very realistic and poignant story about 80's Britain and the skinhead culture.
The story focuses on a young lad and his experiences once taken under the wing of a local gang. Harsh viewing at times but this has some brilliant performances!
34
Inglourious Basterds 2009,  R)
Inglourious Basterds
Just to get a negative remark out of the way > some long dialogue scenes that could have become tiresome... BUT! the rest of the movie makes up for it.
Excellent cast and story, not as gory as I imagined for a Tarantino movie either.
Purely humourous and well executed (no pun intended) with some great performances, good soundtrack and satisfying ending.
35
Collateral 2004,  R)
Collateral
Very entertaining movie. Tom Cruise should play more 'bad guy' roles, I thought he did surprisingly well in this & Jamie Fox gave an equally great performance.
36
Ponette 1996,  Unrated)
Ponette
So glad I got round to watching this film.
A completely absorbing story about a child having difficulty coming to terms with her mother's death. Victoire Thivisol was amazing as the lead character Ponette - but in all honesty the whole cast (predominantly child actors) were brilliant to watch. It truly was like watching reality play out for most of the movie - thats how good they were.
Have the tissues ready - you'd have to be hard-hearted to not shed a tear at this!!
37
Shutter Island 2010,  R)
Shutter Island
An engrossing movie from start to finish, where nothing is quite what it seems - the kind of film I enjoy.
Strong casting & characters, great imagery and even when you guess whats going on.. the plot twists a little bit more and makes you doubt yourself (well, me anyway!).
Suspenseful psychological film with an intriguing ending too.

Avatar 2009,  PG-13)
Avatar
I will be joining the hype with this movie!
It could be said that had this not been so visually compelling, the story may not have been so incredibly immersive - however, it is a film that I found quite exhilarating and beautiful to watch.
Good performances - I like the fact that this film didn't have to depend on 'huge' stars to carry the story either.
Overall, creatively outstanding & a movie I would watch again.
