This is by far one of Steven King's best book adaptations. What I enjoyed most about the movie was its ability to change pace so often and keep you interested. The visual effects were amazing and Jackson / Cusack did a great job developing Cusack's character and the hotel room history.

This film is a fairly straight forward mixture of the virus infected "28 Days Later" type horror and the Indy lighting and camera angles of "Requiem for a Dream". The "fear sensing" element of the infected was a nice touch and allowed this film to go places others have failed. Actor Aneurin's ability to show what seems to be true fear is the hinge on which this movie swings and you can't help but become invested in his survival.

Build me up, buttercup, just to let me down. The "twist" ruins an otherwise sickening (in a good way) look at society and the evil all around us. The necrophilia was a interesting addition but the horn-dog teens really ruin the sadistic nature of the story they are trying to develop with one liners.

5 Stars. This is easily the most gory, grotesque, amazing movie of the past few years. I may be biased to the franchise but I could not find anything to complain about with this film. It took itself just seriously enough to scare the crap out of the audience while paying homage to the lightheartedness of the original.

As a huge fan of the Original (#2 IMO) and the franchise in general, this is one of my favorite remakes. The additional character details they develop with Jason, specifically his ability to RUN after you (AHH!), and the shrine to his mother add some depth I wasn't expecting. The acting is passable, the kill scenes are brutal and the brooding "behind you" scenes are campy (pun intended) but it's everything you'd expect from a F13.

Grave Encounters
This movie completely wasted the first hour. Normally the beginning is used for character development but I found myself with the same impression of each character an hour in that I had at first glance. The found footage sub-genre will always be one of my favorites and when this movie gets down to business it feels like what we all wished MTV's FEAR would have been.

What you would expect. Group of teens helf up in a cabin, forced to kill eachother to survive. The best part was, unsurprisingly, the gasoline water balloon trap.

The intelligent storytelling and character development really set this movie apart from others in the genre. You find yourself emotionally attached to the relationship between Oskar and Eli more with every minute. I normally skip movies that are full subtitle but this one is completely worth the inconvenience.

This movie proves that location isn't everything and provides less of a story and more of a puzzle that is missing pieces. An attention span and a great imagination are a must to appreciate this film. Whilst it pulls off creepy really well, there isn't much substance and the ending leaves you wanting your 1hr40m back.
119
Sinister 2012,  R)
Sinister
Sinister didn't bring a lot of new things to the genre but boy did it DELIVER! The found footage of the previous murders was fantastic and carried the snuff film feel while the doom and gloom kept you hooked in. It was nice to see James Ransone (The Wire) and Ethan Hawke was great as usual.

Great movie. Dark comedy meets horror clown slasher. The one liners and clown themed deaths really sold this movie. You can't argue with a movie willing to rip your intestines out, shape them into a balloon animal then explode your head with a balloon pump.

The Collector 2009,  R)
The Collector
This is a great movie for the Gore-Horror enthusiast. Movie develops the character of the collector brilliantly without giving to much away. The best part of this franchise so far are the traps. Constantly inventing out of the box ways to die that we grew to love with the SAW franchise.
129
The Collection 2012,  R)
The Collection
Just as fantastic as The Collector. A must see for the Gore-Horror enthusiast. They continued to bring the out of the box (pun intended) traps to life and the soundtrack by Clint Mansell hits home. I really like the fact that The Collector in The Collection is portrayed as somewhat vulnerable, unlike other horror franchises.

The Conjuring 2013,  R)
The Conjuring
I was really disappointed with this movie which is surprising considering the director is James Wan (Saw, Insidious). At no point in this movie was I surprised or even intrigued by the direction and storyline in what is essentially just another "haunted house exorcism" movie. Things go bump in the night and, go figure, someone was killed here and now haunts this house. Only this time, we get church hypocrisy thrown in on top.

Imagine a short story montage of Sixth Sense, Signs, Day of the Dead and the Heaven's Gate Cult of 1997. This movie brought found footage and first person to the forefront! I could have watched the first person transformation of human to zombie to blood seeking killer for the full hour and 35 minutes! While the "real story" is lacking compared to the original, WATCH THIS MOVIE!
