This has to be Harvey Keitel's bravest role. Hell it has to be anyone's bravest role. The Academy should have made a special Oscar for him w/ a cock on it. This flix has a seedy fascination. Keitel is scummy but not as scummy as the pair that end up raping a nun. It's interesting that Ferrara could find characters even more deplorable then Keitel even w/ all his corruption, drug use & asking young girls how they suck cock while he jerks off. In the process he runs up a gambling debt on the World Series of $120 000 that in turn costs him his life. For how much Keitel is a son of a bitch & didn't want to see him meet his ends. He's not an anti-hero but he sure is engrossing |

Candyman is kinda a combination of the urban legends of Bloody Mary & the guy w/ a hook for a hand. Tony Todd ads a bit of class to this rip off & peaked my waning interests when he showed up even if his soliloquies are a bit disjointed & confusing. I haven't seen any of the other Candyman movies because I've never really been interested in this as a franchise. Candyman wouldn't even come in the top 10 of horror icons. Do I have to name 10?...Jason, Michele Myers, Leatherface, Frankenstein, Dracula, Freddy, Norman Bates, Pinhead, zombies, the freakin shark from Jaws. That's just ten more interesting then Candyman. I guess just the unoriginality of Candyman bothers me..oh shit! I said Candyman 5 times in this review. DON'T HOLD THIS CRAPPY REVIEW UP TO A MIRROR!! You might get your pee pee cut off |

Reservoir Dogs was releases my senior year in high school & I didn't even notice it (I was too busy partying, drinking & going to Lollapalooza). Ive seen it a number of times after Pulp Fiction came out (I even have a poster of it hanging on my wall) & it get better over time especially if you are a movie fan. Quentin Tarantino takes his love of movies & smartly blends it w/ rich dialogue & a violent edge that hasn't been seen in American film since the 70s. It's a brilliant debut but how the hell do you get Harvey fucking Keitel for your first film? |

I have never seen a Steven Seagal movie & since I was planning on going to see Machete this weekend & they were showing a double feature of Under Siege on MPIX I figured I would finally see one. I always thought of Seagal as a third rate action star I had no interest in his films about surprisingly my first foyer into his career was pretty good but I have to give most of the credit to the casting of Tommy Lee Jones & Gary Busey. As my girlfriend said years ago when we first started dating & we were picking movies out "It has to be good:it has Gary Busey in it". The plot is nothing original just basically Die Hard on a ship & it does what many action films do in adding a romantic interest to tag along the way only to kiss the hero @ the end. Erika Eleniak is basically only good for a pair of sugar boobies but for those I am thankful. It's all action 101 but that doesn't mean it's not entertaining. |

Unforgiven 1992, R)
Eastwood's best western since Outlaw Josey Whales & definitely deserved its Oscar win because its he's most character driven. Actually Unforgiven cleaned up @ Oscar time w/ best picture, best director & a well deserved win by Gene Hackman. Hackman is just amazing but its rare that the screen legend doesn't impress. Eastwood is a man who has put his killing ways behind him as a promise to his dead wife but takes the guns up again to come to collect a bounty for a whore that had been cut up. By 1992 the western was dead & to have Clint back in the saddle one more time was a treat coming up w/ an excellent project that he had total control of to create some old magic. A a real gem for fans of his oaters even though I wouldn't put it on the same level as his Dollar Trilogy |

Universal Soldier 1992, R)
I originally saw Universal Soldier @ the show & I'll tell ya 1992 you had to turn to your lesser action heroes like Jean Claude Van Damme. Stallone put out Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot that same year; Schwarzenegger's Terminator 2 (which I should like more then I do but it's the movie that started my hatred for CGI) was a year old & his stinkfest of Last Action Hero was still to come. Im not an overt fan of Van Damme (I hate how he shows his ass in every movie. They say that's for the ladies but I think it's gay) but like Bloodsport & Kickboxer. Universal Soldier is pretty good for a 2nd rate action fare. Nothing that a good set of kicks to the head can't remedy. John Woo should have directed this instead of Hard Target. |

A good cast in White Sands w/ Willem Dafoe, Mickey Rourke & Samuel L Jackson. Even Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio is sexy when more often then not I find her annoying. A nifty little neo noir that more often then not has had a hard time finding an audience. Not as exceptional as something like Blood Simple but hardly deserves being as neglected as it is. It may be pretty forgettable after you watch it (I had seen it back in 92 & remember nothing about it) it does make for a good time passer. It could have stood to be a little slicker, a little tighter, the dialogue a little crisper the weight of the cast & the double crosses does make it interesting. There's enough in its parts not to make you sorry that you invested your time. It may not be a T bone but sometimes chicken fried streak is just as satisfying |
