Good Movies About Music
As a musician, I find most movies about music trite. I would recommend the movies on this list for anyone who is interested in music as an art.

Thelonious Monk: Straight, No Chaser 2001, PG-13)
Easily the best documentary on this musician and probably any jazz musician ever. Thanks to Clint Eastwood for making this and Bird happen. |

This movie and Amadeus are the best movies I've yet seen about musicians. This one is a bit better than Amadeus as far as teling the truth about a musician's life is concerned. I love the fact that Ray Charles hid none of his warts. |

'Round Midnight 1986, R)
A very fine movie about a fictional musican based on Bud Powell and Lester Young. The only problem with this movie is that Dexter Gordon was pretty sick when it was filmed, and his playing isn't top notch for him. However, it's still very good music. |

Bird 1988, R)
It's Chan's version of Charlie Parker, and she was with him near the end, so we don't see his more successful years. This makes the movie pretty dark throughout. It's very intense and the music is great. |

I think this is my favorite movie about music as a general subject, but since it's Fellini, it's about a lot of other things as well. |

You have to be really interested in music to enjoy this, since it mixes performances with interviews with musicians. I loved it, but I am a musician. |
