i live in the west and see cowboys and indians every day. literally. maybe it's why i've never really cared about westerns. also the generally cheesy music :P
some westerns i've learned to appreciate:

ok i'm not a big fan of westerns. i watched this for monty clift in his film debut and he was damn good for a city slicker. he even gets to punch the duke. overall pretty entertaining. john wayne plays a sonuvabitch which is fine by me, i've never liked him anyway!

I Shot Jesse James 1949,  Unrated)
I Shot Jesse James
the title event takes place in the first twenty minutes and the rest of the film follows robert ford's haunted and hunted life after the fact. this was sam fuller's first film and it's one of his best imo

The Furies 1950,  PG)
The Furies
a great overlooked western from anthony mann. walter huston is always a joy to watch and in his last film he plays the boss of the furies, a man so powerful he prints his own currency. barbara stanwyck plays his willful daughter who's determined to control his ranch one way or another. she may have come from brooklyn but she looks like she belongs in the vast western landscapes. it's a compelling family melodrama with wonderful performances all around and great chemistry between father and daughter with their conflicts and tough talk. you'd almost think they were related. it's well worth checking out altho perhaps wrapped up a little too neatly in the end

The Lusty Men
this is one of nicholas ray's best films with a terrific performance by robert mitchum. i can't quite make out why i have never heard about this before. it might be the ridiculous title. anyway, a great gritty and realistic rodeo story. don't pass it up

Johnny Guitar 1954,  PG)
Johnny Guitar
campy and highly melodramatic but very entertaining. strong parallels to the mccarthy hearings. and there can't be too many westerns of this era with a shootout between two women! i couldn't help seeing stanwyck in joan's part but the ott performances are a big part of the fun :)

beautiful cinematography! traveling hundreds of miles, somehow they never manage to leave monument valley! lol. not really a fan of El Duque; aside from the man who shot liberty valance i prefer the films where he plays an evil bastard. didn't seem like much of a stretch for him tho. jus sayin :p

The Tall T
excellent script based on an early elmore leonard short story, excellent direction by the ever economical budd boetticher, excellent performances by some iconic actors = one excellent western

ok i got sucked into this one. cowboy vs. modern world; not a huge fan of westerns or douglas but this was a heartbreaker. great script by dalton trumbo tho i'm not sure who came up with that title lol. with walter matthau, lovely young gena rowlands, oh, and george kennedy plays a mexican (!)

Little Big Man
one of the more unusual westerns ever made and one of my favorite films as a kid. starring dustin hoffman as a supposedly 121 yr old man, the only white survivor of the battle of the little big horn. ranging from black comedy to drama to slapstick and back, it's a highly entertaining picaresque and also one of the first films to address native american rights in any way. a bit dated now and i think dustin is probably miscast (his accent is particularly bad) but i still love it. and chief dan george is awesome! <3

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
a gorgeous elegiac western with a haunting score and some fine performances. bit long maybe but that would be my only complaint and casey affleck is dead creepy in it! this is the first time i've really taken notice of him. i know a character study full of brooding atmosphere isn't for everyone but u know who u are

True Grit 2010,  PG-13)
True Grit
everything you'd expect from a coen brothers western: a remarkably literate script, magnificent cinematography, impeccable period detail and a wealth of great character actors. their faces tell a story even before they open their mouths. hailee steinfeld deserves an oscar nom. and a lovely score based on the old baptist hymn, leaning on the everlasting arms. 2010 was an exceptional year at the movies
