  76Majikat's Rating My Rating
1
Inglourious Basterds 2009,  R)
Inglourious Basterds
Apart from the last ten minutes or so, there wasn't much about this film I feel that was typically Tarantino and my opinion more is the pity.

Whilst many of my fellow Flixster friends have rated this highly, my expectations were somewhat high, but in truth I found it an over long bore fest, with a handful of enjoyable moments.

Extremely disappointed!

The Hurt Locker 2008,  R)
The Hurt Locker
Worthy of all it?s praise. The Hurt Locker is a very realistically made War movie, with very natual performances from all, but an excellent one from Jeremy Renner.

A very topical theme, with some impressive camera shots and a powerful look at the reality of circumstances.

Without doubt one of the best War films ever made, has a real feel to it, you relate to the characters and the situation and that all adds to make the reality all the more too close to home.
3
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas) 2008,  PG-13)
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas)
Both a brilliant and extremely disturbing piece, told through the eyes of the innocent. Extreme beliefs and past horrific tales make this a truly believable story and the acting of the two boy characters, were so natural and endearing.

I fail to believe anyone who cannot find the raw emotion in this film.

A truly excellent tale of friendship ? I watched this film again straight after watching it for the first time, I just had to share it with someone.
4
Tropic Thunder 2008,  R)
Tropic Thunder
Whilst I quite like the concept of this for a comedy, it was as I had predicted, nothing more than an ok kind of film which is easily forgettable.

Probably not the usual kind of film that you expect Robert Downy Jr and Tom Cruise to be associated with, but perhaps Tom Cruise?s dancing was the highlight of this one.
5
Body of Lies 2008,  R)
Body of Lies
A hugely ambitious and topical film for Ridley Scott, which paid off well. The film is packed wall to wall with content, perhaps so much that a second viewing would benefit to pick up on any bits missed first time around.

Dicaprio strongly leads the cast, whilst Russell Crowe?s character wasn?t particular impressive. Mark Strong however was completely transformed and suited his part well and was an interesting character.

Not so much a beginning, middle and end type of story, but one that was more like an excerpt of a period of time throughout a dangerous political assignment.
6
The Kite Runner 2007,  PG-13)
The Kite Runner
From book to film this intriguing story is quite an insight into the war-torn years in Afghanistan. Directed by Marc Forster, the film appears authentic and natural.

The Kite Runner takes a little while to show which direction it is heading in, but during that period the foundations of the tale are set and character development is established.

The film evolves into a class dividing, guilt ridden, culture changing journey, which questions loyalty and friendship to the deepest of levels.

My one complain if any, is that the older Amir, was less of a good Actor than the boy who took the part of the younger Amir.
7
Persepolis 2007,  PG-13)
Persepolis
Totally unique, a film portraying a message that would benenfit many people to watch. Animated in sillouette style, this very serious subject matter is tackled controversially, yet in an educational way.

This film isn?t just about Culture, Religion, Polictics, battle of the sexes or Coming of age ? it?s a combination of all.

Refreshingly unique
8
The Kingdom 2007,  R)
The Kingdom
A much more serious film than expected, with realistic action and effects. The story was a little boring, but did cover a storyline not often covered.
9
Before the Fall (Napola) 2004,  Unrated)
Before the Fall (Napola)
An intense Drama of powerful proportions. This is a film about ambition, conformity and above all, questioning beliefs. A film that cannot fail to make an impact on you.

The style of this film was an interesting perspective, aiming the storyline at the Cadet age group, which brought forward some interesting characters and led to some interesting training scenes.

A wonderful performance from Max Riemelt. This film is an instant favourite with me.
10
Hotel Rwanda 2004,  PG-13)
Hotel Rwanda
A powerful film with powerful performances to match. An amazing tale based on a true story, a truly enlightening story of one man's love of his family and bravery to save people whilst others were being brutally murdered.

This film requires your full attention and you'd be a harder person than me if this doesn't effect your emotions.

VERDICT: A definite recommendation.
11
Basic 2003,  R)
Basic
Full of twists and turns, but none of them particularly exciting, it's almost a film that tries too hard, the filming, I felt was a little too dark, visually speaking. Watchable, but easily forgettable.
12
The Last Samurai 2003,  R)
The Last Samurai
A big production with some amazing views, a great quality film with a western view on the Samurai style films. It also captures the spiritual sense.

It is perhaps a little disappointing that people will watch, and have watched this film purely because of Tom Cruise being the lead, when although this is one of Cruise's better roles it certainly isn't the Cruise element that makes the film, but I'm sure he would have raised the box office ratings.
13
Dog Soldiers 2002,  R)
Dog Soldiers
Ok where do I start? Such mixed feelings about this film.

You have some great British Drama Actors here, Liam Cunningham, Kevin McKidd, plus Sean Pertwee etc and the acting throughout wasn?t bad, but the film itself was really poor. The werewolves were embarrassing ? I can?t believe a film of this time, with the evolution of special effects and make up etc have come up with this as a suitable horror.

The storyline isn?t original, it?s pretty much the same as many original werewolf movies, but the soldier part is thrown in as an extra.

A very minotinous film, with little appeal.
14
High Crimes 2002,  PG-13)
High Crimes
I like to think that my film ratings are aimed at great performances, storyline etc, rather than how good looking a person is, which is why this film gets a 3. It was an ok film, with ok performances and an ok storyline.

The reason I say this is because if I had such a thing as a list of good looking actors, then my guess would be, Jim Caviezel would be at the top.

VERDICT: Watchable, but forgetable
15
Black Hawk Down 2001,  R)
Black Hawk Down
Well this was a tough 2 hours and 10 minutes for me, I won?t deny. I don?t have a great track record when it comes to war films, but despite my slight struggle?WOW?never seen a war film like it!

The film grips you from the get go and seems like an almost seemless transition from scene to scene, with much realistic bloodshed.

Acted in a very natural way, I?m glad this didn?t received the over-emphasised Hollywood Action touch that many of this type of film has.

This film definitely makes a big impact and certainly opens the eyes to the viewer in terms of what the job entails. If it can help my ignorance on the subject, I?m sure it can help many others too!
16
Musa (The Warriors) (Musa the Warrior) 2001,  R)
17
Charlotte Gray 2001,  PG-13)
Charlotte Gray
Such a different perspective on a war-time film, showing this through a strong woman?s eyes, in a man?s world. This story is essentially driven by love.

Blanchett yet again, pours emotion into her performance and is of course a believable role. I too, have to give Billy Crudup credit for his performance here which I feel is his greatest to date.

Impressive all around with a much enjoyed plot.
18
The General's Daughter 1999,  R)
The General's Daughter
A film that warmed up nicely into an ok military Thriller. Particularly liked James Woods in this, who does occasionally show a glimpse of brilliance.

Although a very different storyline, there were, I felt, reminders of ?A few good Men? in the theme.

An interesting film that?s worthy of a watch and one of Travolta?s better films.
19
The Thin Red Line 1998,  R)
The Thin Red Line
A huge quality star cast, which I?m sure is a huge selling point for this film, however I would find it near impossible to relay this film to someone else, perhaps war films are not quite my forte and maybe this is an area which I just won?t get, afterall it did receive 7 Academy award nominations.
20
Goodnight, Mister Tom 1998,  Unrated)
21
G.I. Jane 1997,  R)
G.I. Jane
The ultimate movie of sex equality, it does have it?s ?Holywood Action? moments, which are set to dramatic music, but this is certainly my favourite performance by Demi Moore and of course you have to admire her athletic form in this film.

Incredibly, it took me at least two watches of this film before I realised it starred Viggo Mortensen (a neme that keeps popping up recently with surprising results).
22
Braveheart 1995,  R)
Braveheart
Quite a film and I'm ashamed to say, a story I knew very little about. A great historical tribute to Scotland's hero.

Therer wer some scenes where I lost concentration, but all in all a well made film.
23
A Few Good Men 1992,  R)
24
The Last of the Mohicans 1992,  R)
The Last of the Mohicans
I found the first half of the film surprisingly dull and the second much more exciting, I feel I need another viewing of this film to take it in better.
25
Forever Young 1992,  PG)
Forever Young
Whilst this was never a great film, it was an enjoyable one, a very young Elijah Wood makes an early performance here and the storyline itself is fairly unique and entertaining.
26
Good Morning, Vietnam 1987,  R)
27
Full Metal Jacket 1987,  R)
Full Metal Jacket
Stanley Kubrick?s ?Full Metal Jacket? is one of the best war films made in my opinion. It?s very much a film of two parts, which I feel is the secret of the films' success. In the first part we see the training of the recruits, in the second we see them go to war, I've not seen any films from this genre that show both.

Admittedly I preferred the training part to the war part, but enjoyable throughout regardless. I felt Matthew Modine who played Joker was a great character in the film.

Many of the action shots of injury etc were very well done and apart from the colour of the blood were fairly realistic.

Glad I finally got around to watching this film, had many reviews for it and everyone else seems to have already watched it.
28
Predator 1987,  R)
Predator
Not watched this film for years ? of course it?s very typical of the 80?s Action ? Muscles, loud, explosions, machine guns. This seemed back then, a film for the boys and I don?t think my opinion has changed much, other than that for the actual alien itself, which seemed great at the time, but now just looks like a person dressed in costume.
29
Escape From Sobibor 1987,  PG)
Escape From Sobibor
One of two films that have made me cry, very sad story about a POW camp
30
Platoon 1986,  R)
Platoon
A film it seemed, everyone had seen apart from me. Certainly interesting, but it did take a little while for me to take Charlie Sheen serious as I kept thinking of his role as Topper Harley in Hot Shots.

I know many will disagree for my rating of this film, but I didn't quite see it as an iconic, classic, or masterpiece of a film
31
Top Gun 1986,  PG)
32
First Blood (Rambo: First Blood) 1982,  R)
First Blood (Rambo: First Blood)
The first film my parents ever hired when we bought our first Video recorder. I can?t help thinking; if only they had let him have something to eat?

Such an escalation of events for something that begins so trivial, yet a thoroughly entertaining film, even all these years later. Very typical of the 80?s Action genre, but one to be reflected on with enjoyment, I?m not and never have been a huge fan of Stallone and yet this film somehow works.
33
An Officer and a Gentleman 1982,  R)
An Officer and a Gentleman
A film I have watched over and over since I was a kid and annoyingly know pretty much every word to.

I am a self-confessed, non-girly girl and a flixster friend thought they'd made a breakthrough when they heard I liked this film, sorry to disappoint but it was the assort course, the relationship between Zac and Sid and the relationship between Zac and Serjeant Foley that I loved so much.

VERDICT: A film that everyone should watch at some point
34
Private Benjamin 1980,  R)
Private Benjamin
One of my favourite 80?s films, this is a guilty pleasure of mine. Some comical and cheesy moments, but they suit the era and is ultimately a fun watch.
35
Yanks 1979,  R)
36
Hanover Street 1979,  PG)
37
Apocalypse Now 1979,  R)
Apocalypse Now
It doesn't take long to see why this is such a popular high rated film, a great solid performance by Martin Sheen and this is one film where the narration really seems to work well.

Admittedly I did have to watch this in a few sittings, but was a film I enjoyed, I'm sure this is one that is rated higher by the men, but liked it all the same.
38
The Deer Hunter 1978,  R)
The Deer Hunter
After a slow start ?Deerhunter? evolves into an impressive piece of cinema history, with the ability to have as strong an impact today as it did at the time of it?s release.

With an impressive cast and strong performances by De Niro and Walken, this film totally pulls you in and really gets to your emotions.
