An original, witty, powerful and mind blowing film. David Fincher has raised the bar of modern cinema. Its provocative and social critical. It gives our society the finger with a big smile on the face. Brilliant.
A stunning film about drugs in our modern day society. Living in the present and getting the quick fix. Like opening a champagne bottle, the cork shooting off and the champagne poring out, but after a few seconds the excitement fades away. But here the champagne keeps poring out and you try to drink it so you don't spill everywhere and you choke on all the fizzyness. Visually stunning and inventive and superb acting. I was surprised by Marlon Wayans. Ellen Burstyn is exceptional. Not for the faint hearted.
An Australian cult classic. Beautiful and disturbing at the same time. Bubby is 38 years old and has been held inside his apartment all his life, by his religious, abusive and mentally ill mother. As he discovers the meaning of death, he kills his mother and ventures out into the world. A journey through the human dualism.
Good >< bad.
Right >< wrong.
Superego >< id.
Science >< religion.
But in the end, love concurs all. Beautiful and breath taking. But not for the faint hearted and not for religiouse people.
A forgotten masterpiece from 1957 which follows a jury in a murder case. The film handles topics like guilt, logic, difference of opinion and the way our society is built up. Exceptional acting. Exceptional directing. Exceptional film.
An epic anime masterpiece by Hayao Miyazaki. Compared to Miyazaki's other work (e.g. Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Nausicaa) Princess Mononoke takes a more mature approach. Set in medieval Japan, at the dawn of the Iron Age, humans battle forest animals and nature gods, each fighting for their share of the new emerging world order. In search of power, humans try to tame and defeat nature, but Miyazaki never demonizes the human characters, nor does he oversentimentalise the forces of nature.
A cult classic with lots of depth. An original, surrealistic sci-fi film, before its time. Its an intellectual vision of how a bizarre and bureaucratic world would look like in the future. A cold and mechanic world. A masterpiece by Gilliam.
A harsh and brutal film about a New Zealand family trying to make it through life in a cold world. The husband is a big and proud Maori who gets violent when he gets drunk and takes it out on his wife or anybody else who pisses him off. A very moving, but sad story. I don't like violence, but I couldn't help but feel satisfied when he beat the shit out of the uncle.
Dare I say it!! Maybe the best gangster film ever made.. With the Scorsese dialogs, long takes, brutal script and superb acting. Especially by Joe Pesci. "Am I funny like a clown." Brilliant improv.
Even though Tarantino is't original, his films are a wonderful new blow of filmmaking. The stylish storytelling and incapturing narrative. The witty remarks and jokes and the cool dialogues. Tarantino is a master at what he does. And with the brilliant cast for Pulp Fiction, it is the crown jewel of his work.
A classic buddy movie and great adventure film, but also very dark when you think about it. A tale about courage, camaraderie and greed. Michael Caine and Sean Connery are brilliant together.
this film is superbly made. it is dark, detailed and has so many qualities. The acting, the directing, the cinematography and the script are all brilliant. A true sci-fi classic. probably the best.
An English intellectual masterpiece. One mans dark and cynical observation of his fellow human beings and our whole existance. A philosophical and mind bending piece of work. David Thewlis gives one of the best performances in the history of cinema.
A beautiful dark Swedish horror/drama about love, life and death and about fitting in. Very good acting by the 2 young lead actors and beautiful cinematography. Very good ending too.
A brilliant and moving cult classic, which takes place in a small mental institution. Superb acting, especially by Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher who plays one of the greatest villains in cinematic history.
A Japanese anime cult classic set in the future. The story plays out in Neo-Tokyo after world war 3. A young motorcycle gang member receives telekinetic powers and uses it to gain power. but can he control it??
A beautiful and quirky love story. Jeff Bridges is brilliant as a self pitying drunk and Robin Williams is equally good as a schizophrenic bum. One of my favorites.
A beautiful and moving film, based on true events. It's both sweet and sad at the same time. Steers up a lot of emotions. A doctor discovers a drug, which revives patients from comas. Robin William's acting is very good and Robert De Niro's acting is superb in a very challenging role.
A brutal and anarchistic road movie. A crazy, surrealistic antihero movie. Its mad love with nothing to loose. Woody Harrelson, Juliette Lewis, Robert Downey Jr. and Tommy Lee Jones are all great.
A film about midlife crisis, rebellion, relationship, homosexuality, desire, acknowledgement and just seeing the beauty in life. I have had discussions about the meaning of the ending. *spoiler* I believe the neighbor father always has been homosexual, but just hasn't come out of the closet. He has suppressed his sexuality for years by acting macho and joining the army. He has learned to hate everything he is, himself. He finally opens up, accepts his sexuality and kisses Kevin Spacey, who denies him. He snaps and shoots poor Kevin Spacey. But that's just my interpretation.
