The Tenant
My favorite Polanski "horror" film. Watching Polanski, who cast himself in the lead, go through his mental breakdown is unsettling. And when he's at his peak into madness Polanski the director uses some really simple perspective shoots that leave you totally amazed. This film is truly a magnifecent ride into madness. Chockfull of looney characters. Brilliant filmmaking. Polanski at his finest!

Mark of the Devil
Veiwing this after not having seen it for a long time i was pleasantly suprised by how much better it is than i remembered. I always liked this sleaze fest but this time around i really liked it. First off i love Reggie Nalder. And this is the Reggie Nalder role. Hes unpleaseant, sadistic and he will stick a red hot poker in your ass faster than you can say,"Heresy!" Herbert Lomportrayle of the impotent Judge Cumberland is really were the strengths of this film lies. Olivera Vuco looks weird but her character is great.
The storys fun . The Violence is unpleasant. The music is great and its got Reggie Nalder.

Dellamorte Dellamore (Cemetery Man) (Demons '95) (Of Death, of Love)
I totally forgot how good this film is. I just watched it for the first time in ...14 years... Michele Soavi was at one time the man to keep an eye on in the Italian horror film. His return to filmmaking in the last couple years, after a loooong hiatus, is greatly welcomed!
Dellamorte Dellamore is a great horror/black comedy/art house film.

Incredible modern day take on Elizabeth Bathory. One of the best Lesbo Vampire flicks around. Highly recommended to any one into that type of sleaze!

Possession (The Night the Screaming Stops) 1981,  R)
Possession (The Night the Screaming Stops)
A very odd film, but very cool. Sam Neill and Isabelle Adjani give very intense performances. They push their emotions to the brink of utter madness....and ours. Brilliant on their part. The "cuccumber" creature is cool. And Isabelle's miscarriage is about as moist as it gets! Very disturbing. I bet her lungs ached for years after filming that scene.
A very emotionally draining film. But my god i love it! One of the best european art house horror pictures.

Le Notti del terrore (Burial Ground: The Nights of Terror) (The Zombie Dead)
There something about this film i love. I dont know if its the 40 year old dwarf they got to play a 12 year old boy? Or if its the really bad acting? Or if its the equally bad spfx. The zombies have HUGE heads. I think its all those things and more. Fun film. Great to watch with drunken friends!!

Dèmoni (Demons) 1985,  R)
Dèmoni (Demons)
The Black pimp cracks me up. Cool film that borders on the zombie mythos. It has that apocalyptic feel as Romero's films...its just not done as well. Although this is probably Bava jr.s best film. Great setting and some really creepy scenes. Great transformations and some pretty hot italian woman.

Demons 2 - The Nightmare Returns 1986,  R)
Demons 2 - The Nightmare Returns
The same ol' situation...just a different locale and its not as good as the first one. BUT...it has that black pimp from the first one, this time as a exercise trainer. That gets it a extra star because i love that guy!
Total rehash that isnt as good but still a fun time.

Jungle Holocaust (Ultimo mondo cannibale) (Cannibal) (Carnivorous) (Last Cannibal World)
Deodato is in fine form with this cannibal flick. A much better film than Cannibal Holocaust as story is concerned. This one has characters you empathize with. Holocaust had no redeeming characters to empathize with.

High Tension (Switchblade Romance) 2003,  R)
High Tension (Switchblade Romance)
This film kicked total ass until the end. It was one of the most brutal films in a long time. But that fucking ending really killed it! Why does every film nowadays feel the need for a twist ending? If it didnt end like it did i would be giving this baby a 5 star rating. It put me in bad mood for a couple days. really. It was like the second comming. and then that freaking ending! If i were able to have it my way. That chick would of killed the guy with the barbed club. Went to get her freind with the moustache out of the van....only to find her severed head. THE END! That would of been a great way to end this film.
26
The Abandoned 2007,  R)
The Abandoned
Here's a new concept...an adult horror film!? Who would of ever guess judging from the god awful movie poster???! And a misleading trailer doesnt help either.
A very impressive film that is not for the primative minded film goer. Meaning someone who needs to have their films handed to them.
Visually haunting. This film is part Fulci's The Beyond, Polanski's The Tenent and a dash of Evil Dead. But its only simalar to those films from affar. For those looking for a Ring/Grudge inspired film...hold your breath....this is not it. (thank fukn god!!!) It ozzes Euro horror....the way i like them. Its no masterpeice by far. But what it is , is a solid horror film thats been a long time comming.
My only complaint....shakey cam. Such an over used and unnessasary technique!

Heres another cool entry in the erotic vampire lesbo genre. Rollin crafts a cool and surreal film. A must for anyone who loves The Blood Spattered Bride, Vampyres, Hammers Karnstein trilogy or European horror in general.

La Novia Ensangrentada (The Blood Spattered Bride) (Blood Castle)
Dreamy and stylish. The Blood Spattered Bride is one of the best Vampyr Lesbo films around. Well made and great on atmosphere and direction. Based on the story of Carmilla, which many of these types were based upon including Hammers Karnstein trilogy. Highly recommended.

The Finishing School (The House That Screamed) (The Boarding School) (La Residencia) 1970,  PG)
The Finishing School (The House That Screamed) (The Boarding School) (La Residencia)
The House That Screamed is one of my favorite horror films ever. Its influence can be seen in countless films, most notable is Argento's Suspiria. Not only has it been the template for other films but it draws inspiration from classics like Psycho and Frankenstein. Directed by Narciso Ibanez Serrador, who also directed the disturbing Who Can Kill A Child.

Quin puede matar a un nio? (Who Can Kill a Child?)(Death is Child's Play)(Island of the Damned) 1976,  R)
Quin puede matar a un nio? (Who Can Kill a Child?)(Death is Child's Play)(Island of the Damned)
Who Can Kill a Child possibly has the most grueling opening credits ever. Made up of documentary footage from concentration camp victims of WWII and other wars that followed. Mostly the footage contains child victims. My girlfreind was balling through the opening credits. God bless her for watching my movies!
Although the film starts out on a grueling note......which i too found extremly hard to watch, but focused on the subtitles, so i wasnt paying attention to detail...thank god......the middle drags a good bit.
A couple on vacation wants to get away from the tourist heavy mainland, takes a boat to an island 4 hrs. away. Once there, other than a few children the couple find the island "deserted" After a very long investigation of the island...and i mean long....the husband discovers all of the adults have been and are still being killed by the children.
This film is good but the slow middle and the frustrating decisions the husband makes prevent Who can Kill a Child from being a real gem. The husband by the way looks like a cross between "Andy Travis" from WKRP in Cincinatti and Peter Sellers. Odd.
The ending gets really fucked up as the question "WHO CAN KILL A CHILD" is answered......Andy Travis Sellers! Thats who!
The film is very gritty. And in no way is the lush style of director Narciso Ibanez Serrador earlier effort The House That Screamed apparent. But maybe it benifits from that? The House that Screamed by the way is a MASTERPEICE!
The major flaw of this film is its opening credit sequence and the hint through out of a political message.....like there would be no wars without adults or something like that. Its never a fully devloped point. And its a point that is totally unnessasary. But still the film manages to be an above average watch.

Die Schlangengrube und das Pendel (Blood of the Virgins)(The Blood Demon)(Torture Chamber)
Released here in the states as The Torture Chamber of Dr Sadismn, The Blood Demon is also known under many other titles including Castle Of the Walking Dead and The Snake Pit And the Pendulum. In fact The Blood Demon is a new one to me!? But all that aside, The Torture Chamber of Dr Sadismn is a REALLY fun film. Filled with great sets and some really atmospheric scenes thanks to the Bava-esque lighting. Theres a horse and carriage ride towards the begining of the film that is so fucking incredibly creepy and thick with atmosphere! But one cant expect a totally atmospheric horror film here. Theres plenty of cheese. Based very very loosely on Poes Pit and the Pendulum. I have to say this is one of my all time favorites. This film is a MUST for fans of 60's Euro horror!!

Il Boia scarlatto (Bloody Pit of Horror)(The Scarlet Hangman)(A Tale of Torture)
This is one of those its so bad its good films. But I do have to say the score is fucking great! This film had me seriously laughing out loud at the dialogue. Mickey Hargitay has some of the best lines. Obssessed with The Crimson Executioners "perfect Body" fun stuff here. Definatly deserving to be on the Something Weird label.

La Ragazza che sapeva troppo (The Girl Who Knew Too Much) (The Evil Eye) 1962,  Unrated)
La Ragazza che sapeva troppo (The Girl Who Knew Too Much) (The Evil Eye)
Hailed as the first Giallo. But less seedier than the traditional giallo. The Girl Who Knew to Much is a fantastic film. The Bava look is full in effect! The thing that does suck for us English only speaking Chaps; as the film is spoken in Italian and subtitled. Now i could care less about reading subtitles, but when its Bava you want to absorb as much of the imagry as possible! Thats the only downside to this film. And truthfully its not even that bad of a thing. Theres plenty of suspence to allow the veiwer to admire the artistry the Bava so well crafts.
TGWKTM has a sleek and rather familar story. The whole twist has been done in many other Giallos so its not that hard to figure out. The humor throughout is actually pretty funny and the very last gimmick is laugh out loud halarious!
Bavas first foray into the Giallo is defiantly a winner!

Baba Yaga (Kiss Me Kill Me) (The Devil Witch) 1973,  PG)

odd Euro Cult film. Based on a italian comic. With the ever enjoyable George Eastman. I remember this being a bit slow. But stylish.

Tragic Ceremony 1972,  Unrated)
Tragic Ceremony
Camille Keaton is once again in Italian hands is this rather dull film. Its pace is slow as moleassas. And like so many other pasta land films there are no reasons for characters decisions that make NO sense. I was really hoping this film would meet its reputation. But it falls short of it. The film does pick up the pace one the characters confront the Satanic cult leading to a very gory spectacle which later in the film plays over and over. Not a complete piece of shit but definatly not deserving of its reputaion.

Paura nel Buio (Fear in the Dark) (Hitcher in the Dark ) 1989,  R)
Paura nel Buio (Fear in the Dark) (Hitcher in the Dark )
Umberto Lenzi knows how to make a sleazy little film. Hitcher in the Dark is not an exeption. Its flawed by horrible acting and stupid situations, but the sleaze factor more than makes up for it. For the forgiving Euro-trash lovers only.

Frontière(s) (Frontier(s)) 2007,  NC-17)
Frontière(s) (Frontier(s))
Frontier(s) is like Hostel meets Texas Chainsaw meets Apt. Pupil meets The People Under the Stairs. Its a uncomfortable watch. Its very violent and gory, the characters we are supposed to identify with are losers and the last act of the film the "main" character wanders around catatonic. I guess all she's been through one cant blame her for shaking and trembling the way she does. I didnt hate Frontier(s), its well made and sleazy fun. I just found that watching people get tortured and carved up for an 1 1/2 hrs to be torturous in its own right. I mean this film is brutal! And theres nothing here that we havnt seen a zillion times before.
This ones got it all....cannibals, backwoods frenchmen, nazi's, whores, cop shootouts and inbreeding. Its a hard one to recommend, but if you like the new wave of Torture horror, this is one of the better versions. I personally prefer a good horror film with a good plot and some real scares that arent for the sake of shock value.

La Chiesa (The Church) (Cathedral of Demons) 1989,  R)
La Chiesa (The Church) (Cathedral of Demons)
This was originally gonna be the third Demons film. But thankfully it wouldnt of worked under that title. The Church has a surreal quality to it and a pounding score by Keith Emerson. I need to rewatch this because its been sometime since i first veiwed it. But i remeber thinking it was pretty descent.

Cut and Run (Inferno in diretta) 1985,  R)
Cut and Run (Inferno in diretta)
not the best or most entertaing Jungle film. BUT it does have Wille Ames wearing a Mickey Mouse t-shirt. And he witnesses one of the most brutal kills ever put on screen.

Chi sei? (Beyond the Door) (The Devil Within Her) (Who Are You?) (Beyond Obsession) 1974,  R)
Chi sei? (Beyond the Door) (The Devil Within Her) (Who Are You?) (Beyond Obsession)
This Italian Exorcist rip-off is chock full of stupid situations and awful dialogue. But the scenes were it deals with the fully possessed Juliet Mills is actually pretty damn creepy. Its odd how those scenes can be so damn effective yet the shit surrounding it is pretty laughable.
This one has one of my all time favorite scores by Franco Micalizzi. The theme Bargin With The Devil is ultra fucking cool, and is always in constant listening rotation in my collection. In fact the score is one of those perfect scores from begining to end.
46
Salo (Salò o le 120 giornate di Sodoma) 1979,  NC-17)
Salo (Salò o le 120 giornate di Sodoma)
Seriously the most extreme film ive ever seen. I tried watching it 16 years ago and couldnt make it through the first 30 minutes. It left such a dark and filthy feeling in just those first 30 minutes, it took me until now to see it all the way through. And those first thirty minutes are NOTHING compared to the shit that happen with every passing minute! (pun intended)
Amongst all the sexual degradation, the killing of the human spirit and sadistic graphic violence, Salo is a gorgeous film to look at. Every single shot could be framed and hung up in a fine art gallery.
Salo or the 120 days in Sodom doesnt use lube on its veiwer, its as harsh as it gets and when you think youve had enough it sticks three fingers in your ass and brands you with the other hand!
May never again require another veiwing.

Let the Right One In 2008,  R)
Let the Right One In
This IS an amazing film! The story is so well told and the characters incredibly well developed. This is an art house comming of age vampire film that one would think would be totally pretentious...but no fucking way! The film is so gentle and beautiful, yet when it has to be is very violent. This is probably the most important vampire film since Martin, and one of the best films ive seen this year! The cinematography is incredible. The shot of a body being chainsawed out of a frozen lake left me slack jawed as well as multiple other shots.. Incredible and highly recommended to people who love FILM...not dumbass fast paced actioner's with a hot cast!

The Reincarnation of Isabel (Riti, magie nere e segrete orge nel trecento) 1972,  G)
The Reincarnation of Isabel (Riti, magie nere e segrete orge nel trecento)
I dont really know what to say about this one. It had all the making for a big steaming pile of poop, yet i rather enjoyed it for all the wrong reasons. This is a really weird attempt at making a 'artsy' sleaze feast but it is so badly done its laughable! First if anyone ever attempts to watch this..first thing is make sure you DO NOT TRY TO FOLLOW THE STORY!! It doesnt even attempt to make sense. But it does have alot of sleazy moments, groovy camera work and every female character in it does disrobe and a score that iam sure the producers retarded nephew hand picked from library vaults.

Them (Ils) 2006,  R)
Them (Ils)
Well heres an obvious statement to those that have seen this...The Strangers totaly ripped this one off and gave it no credit.
I went into this totaly cold, hoping this was gonna be a cool French Paranormal / the unknown horror film. Instead this is the film The Strangers totaly ripped off. At first, when i realized this was another stalk and scare a couple in the house film, i was pretty dissapointed. But much to my suprise this one had real tension and a great ending. THe Strangers basically took this premise and added creepy masks. I

Le Frisson des vampires (The Shiver of the Vampires) 1970,  R)
Le Frisson des vampires (The Shiver of the Vampires)
Another great erotik vampire film from French director Jean Rollin. Very surreal and hypnotic. Excellent use of gothic location. The castle used is very claustrophobic with its tight circular rooms and stairways. This is not a film for evryone. But for those who love the atmosphere and style of Euro horror this is a definate winner. This has it all, gothic atmosphere, lesbian vampires, incestous vampires, primary color lighting, a psychadelic guitar score, fog machines and hot 70's French woman who spend lots of time with their clothes off! The story doesnt really matter...its all about the style! Recommended.

Antichrist 2009,  Unrated)
Antichrist
Antichrist is a very mood heavy film. Its dark, bleak and utterly unforgiving. The acting and direction is brilliant. Major kudos goes to its two leads for taking such a risk in the material presented. There is alot of strong imagry and the relationship between the grieving husband and wife is totaly masochistic.
This is a incredible film and although I understood what went on I definatly need to see it a couple more times to totaly get it. There is a good bit of heavy symbolism thrown at you on top of the heavy subject matter and mood that it will take me a couple more veiwings. But thankfully i found it that good that i look forward to revisiting this nightmare again. Its original and a welcome entry in the genre!
Just see it!
52
Martyrs 2008,  R)
Martyrs
Martyrs is an odd and unforgetable experience. I went into this with out any knowledge of what i was seeing other than it having a notorious reputation for being brutal.
Pascal Laugier fill the first act with good creepy imagery, tense atmosphere and some really good jump scenes. It had me a couple times and thats not easy. Its beginings are blanketed in mystery and suspence. But the second act turns into a completely different film. With lots of torture....for the female character and the viewer. Now i feel the whole 'torture' scenario has been played to death. I liked Hostel and Frontier(s), but I have no interest in the genre. Give me creepy old fashion horror. Not glossy torture ala Saw. But Martyrs is different than the rest. There is originality in the story. The last act is a very uncomfortable watch and it never lets up. Its fucking brutal and unpleasent. Yet there is a cool reason. Laugier continues the suspence in the last act and there is still a great horror element. I hear Laugier is up for directing the Hellraiser remake and after seeing this iam sure he may be the only person capable of doing it.

The Wages of Fear 1953,  Unrated)
The Wages of Fear
A great story with high tension and beautiful cinematography catapult The Wages Of Fear to masterpiece realm. This is a brutal film were you actually care about the fate of the characters, only knowing that its not going to be good. It doesnt help that i have seen Friedkins remake Sorcerer, but both films are different enough from the other that they are both enjoyably different and incredible films on thier own!
Although it starts out slow, but a good slow, once the film kicks in its nail biting excitment. The locations of the mountainous regions in South America are fantastic.

Lips of Blood (Lèvres de sang) 1975,  Unrated)
Lips of Blood (Lèvres de sang)
The few Rollin films that ive seen have come across as surreal grim fairy tales with the photography and the gothic locations that transend the budget constraints. And thats how a true film artist does it. He knows how to manipulate the low budget to become a part of the atmosphere and lets you focus on the beauty he created.
Lips Of Blood is a beautiful film and from my limited experience with Rollin his most linear in terms of plot. There is very little dialogue which was a good thing because those subtitles were pretty fast at times. The female vampires are typical of 60's - 70's Euro vampires in terms of them being extremly seductive while being able to walk through scenes in a blank gaze. Annie Brilland not only has the main protaginist under her spell but she also had me.
This is a masterpeice!
55
Night of the Hunted 1980,  R)
Night of the Hunted
The Night Of The Hunted was a bit of a slow move, but ultimatly the payoff was good. It starts out like gandbusters but then it became a descent into madness were all we basically do is follow around characters who try to remember their lives and themselves. It really does become trying on the veiwer after so long. Unlike his vampire films were the surreal atmosphere is just as much a centeral character i had a harder time with it here. But i didnt dislike this. The explanation at the end really sold me. Brigitte Lahaie was really outstanding. You usually cant say that about a Porn actress. But her acting was really good. I can see why Rollin used her so much.

Vierges et vampires (Requiem for a Vampire) 1971,  R)
Vierges et vampires (Requiem for a Vampire)
Requiem For A Vampire is another journey into the gothic fairy tale world of French director Jean Rollin. I absolutly love his vampire films, and this is no exception. Requiem employs all the mechanics of all the other Rollin films ive seen so far...Creepy French Castles, little dialogue, gel lighting, incredibly gorgeous woman whith hypnotic gazes, cheap special effects, cool music and of coarse great atmosphere. I loved the way this film begins with the two female leads, dressed as clowns in full makeup, on a high speed chase through the French country side. It was beautiful. If i were to recommend a Rollin film to someone this wouldnt be the first one, but still if you get what the man is doing youll love this one too.

Enter the Void (Soudain le vide) 2009,  Unrated)
Enter the Void (Soudain le vide)
While Enter The Void is without a doubt very original and creative its way too long. Its 2 1/2 hours of dizziness as the camera floats and spins throughout the film. I seriously wanted it to be over at the hour and a half mark. Thank god i didnt see this in the theatre, just seeing it on my t.v. and iam feeling nauseous!
But i gotta give it to the creative minds behind this film because its unlike anything ive ever seen before. And to create something original in this day and age deserves some kudos. Even if the film is a mind altering bore fest.
Actually the more i think about it, which you cant help but do becuse the film really stays with you, the more i kinda like it. So iam bumping it up 1/2 a star.
58
Irreversible 2002,  Unrated)
Irreversible
Irreversible is a pretty original and visually striking film thats both really well made and visually original while evoking that gross dirty feel you get from other films like Salo, Cruising and In A Glass Cage. I actually saw Hoe's Enter The Void first and that was a film that really sticks you and Irreversible does the same. Without a doubt the most greuling rape scene ive ever witnessed on film and it seemed to go on for ever all in one shot. Its exhausting to think about let alone witness. The whole Rectum club was so fucked up, and not just the gay scene going on there but the violence that erupts.
I hate to use the word like or love with a film like this but Irreversible is something else and highly recommended. Noe is definatly a guy who goes against the grain. You either get him or you dont, and i usually hate spinning shakey cam shit but here it seems to have a purpose.
59
Les Démoniaques (Curse of the Living Dead, The Demoniacs) 1974,  R)
Les Démoniaques (Curse of the Living Dead, The Demoniacs)
Another fun Rollin film that is about 19th century wreckers (men who lure ships to their death and then plunder the wreckage) who rape two young woman only to be haunted by the woman. As far as Rollins goes I wasnt disappointed. But thats not to say this is one of his better films. Its definatly different from his other horror films. It retains the signature Rollins hallucinatory fairy tale, were spectres walk about in trance like states. The woman are always scantily clad and the locations are incredible ancient European ruins.
The film moves a little slower than previous horror films by Rollins that ive seen and ive almost see tnem all now. The story is fun and the woman are gorgeous. I really love these films but i wouldnt recommend these to just anybody.

Night of the Seagulls (La Noche de las gaviotas) 1975,  R)
Night of the Seagulls (La Noche de las gaviotas)
The fourth film in the Blind Dead series, Night of the Seagulls may be the best installment. Although i have never watched the third film The Ghost Galleon and Its been years since i saw the first two. I loved the premise of this one, sacrificing a female victim to the Blind dead horseman every night for seven days so they leave the towns folk alone. I love the skeletal look of the undead Templars and as always i love seeing them gallop in slow-mo on their horses. There is even a cool scene of the hero's stealing their horses and they too seem to gallop away in slow motion. One of the frustrations at watching some of these older films and truthfully alot of horror in general is what i like to refer to as frozen in terror syndrome. Sometimes its fun and then alot of times its frustrating. The Blind Dead films really milks the frozen in terror syndrome this one being the main heroine. And it is a bit frustrating. But if you can accept it than youll find this to be a very atmospheric horror film that deserves its reputation.
