If the screenplay for a movie is written by Harold Pinter, you know you're in for a treat. This one was his first of three collaborations with the then blacklisted Joseph Losey and it's definitely the finest. Dirk Bogarde is on fire as the servant 'Barrett' who's slowly overtaking the power in the household. A certain sexual tension is present during the whole course of the movie between the different characters and it leads up to a surrealistic climax at the end. Everything starts pretty standard but before you realize it mayhem ensues, it's Pinter at his finest, as absurd as you can imagine. The cinematography is absolutely stunning. It shows every room from angles you don't expect and gives a claustrophobic feel to it. As I said, I found Dirk Bogarde to be the big star of this one but as I come to think of it, I found everybody acting on a very high level. It's definitely a shame James Fox didn't play in more films if you see his performance here. Sarah Miles was very interesting in this one, balancing on the rope between seductive and wacky. The music also adds to the overall mood, especially the Johnny Dankworth & Cleo Laine song 'All Gone'.

If you put the words 'Werner Herzog' and 'little people' in the same sentence the only thing one can expect is anarchy and that's exactly what this movie delivers. Sometimes a bit irritating and difficult to comprehend but the whole concept stays with you for a while, even long after you've seen the movie. The depiction of the crucifixion of Jesus is hilarious and every scene with 'Hombré' in it is worthy of your attention.

This movie is one long adrenaline rush. The music accompanies the images very well. Either you're a fan of it or you aren't. I pretty much liked the music in the sence that it makes you want to start to run yourself, what's a little bit difficult in a room that's 5 by 6. The overall style of the movie was great but i could do with a better story, although i know that wasn't the most important intent for this movie. The magic-realistical pieces worked OK, including the high-pitched screams which reminded me of the little Oskar Matzerath(sometimes i found there was a bit too much luck involved). In the end i have to say i really had a wonderful time watching this picture. The message of the movie becomes clear after a couple of minutes and is brought in a very original way. The 81 minutes really flew by, but what else to expect from such an up-tempo movie?

Even after four viewings this masterpiece doesn't lose anything of its power. Paul Newman is fantastic as Fast Eddie Felson and Laurie, Gleason and Scott are simply amazing too. Great drama with a terrific atmosphere. The smoky poolhalls and b&w-photography really stand out. This is a movie to love, especially the first scene where he plays Minnesota Fats the first time is great to watch. One has to wonder what Scorsese was thinking when he tried to make a sequel to this masterpiece. The music also fits the atmosphere very well and gets you in the right mood. I don't see any flaws in this film. Definitely in my top 20 favorite movies.

The premise of this movie sounded very encouraging. I really looked forward to seeing this absurd tale about a young man who's afraid that if he sleeps he will die. On the dvd cover there was a reference to Jacques Tati and that pulled me over the line to watch this one. Already after a merely 15 minutes this decision came back to bite me in the posterior. The tempo was very slow, something I don't dislike per se, but here it became annoying very quickly. It's clear from the first encounter with Basile that reality and imagination blend together and you cannot tell what is real and what isn't. This makes the whole very difficult to follow. After 45 minutes i contemplated about turning it off but some of the beautiful images saved the movie. Some 'dream'-sequences were nice, such as Basile trying to fly with the red plane and his visit to the bar. The ending was disappointing, one moment you're watching a conversation and when you dare to blink the movie is over. P.S.: the actor portraying Igor (or was it Roger?) was not better than your average flowerpot.

I heard from a couple of friends that this is one of the best, if not the best, movies about poker out there. But if this is the best i really do not want to see the other ones. It was an OK movie with an interesting story if you like the poker game. The poker scenes itself were good and not too short. Especially the scenes where Mike goes up against KGB were worth watching. But I found the rest to be too cliché. Didn't like the character of Edward Norton. Everything he does just isn't believable, he was a caricature. The love story is pure filler and Landau doesn't add much but he couldn't do more in this role. In all it's just too simple, nobody believes for a second that Matt Damon can read those cards with one of his goofy looks. Turturro and Janssen were good, albeit there scenes were scarce too. Malkovich clearly has the best performance here as the villain. Nice to see Johnny Chan make a cameo.

This was a nice little movie by Frank Capra but he has done much better films. Sinatra is clearly on the wrong place in this movie. He plays a good-for-nothing rascal with a heart of gold but I really disliked the character he was portraying. The kid was great in scenes they had together but Sinatra wasn't funny once on those occasions. On the contrary, one of the punchlines in the movie is Sinatra saying that he's going to punch his kid, which I found strange and not funny at all. But in all I cannot say the acting was bad on Sinatra's part. I just like the singer much more than the actor. Robinson seemed to do this one on automatic pilot and Carolyn Jones was funny and did a fine job. Thelma Ritter also deserves mentioning. The story had the potential of being great but it was not performed to the fullest. Also I expected more songs since I saw this as being a musical/comedy. The 'High Hopes' part in the movie was one of the high points. The whole part of Sinatra being forced in a relationship ended on a down note. After that it became chaotic and it seemed they didn't really knew how to get to the cheesy ending, an ending that's expected from Capra.

What a nice recognizable comedy this is. Especially the first part is great with its parody and a bunch of funny Dilbert-like characters. Some of the quotes are genius and deserve a place on the wall. The role of Milton was hilarious and it's certainly one of the highlights of this movie. I had the most fun though with the scenes involving the copy machine, highly recognizable and a great find. Great use of rap-music also, it really showed the contrast. I was afraid that Ron Livingston was a bit light as a main character but he played this role to perfection. He excels in the scenes right after he's been hypnotized and when he decides to stay home from work. Jennifer Aniston was great too and funny in her own right. In the second part of the movie you get the feeling that they could have done more with the material. The ending, then again, was worthwhile.

Great movie with a fast pace and a jazzy soundtrack composed by Quincy Jones. Visually New York looks gorgeous in this one and the images really breathe the atmosphere of the movie. Gregory Peck was very enjoyable and after almost giving up hope on him after watching 'The Paradine Case' and 'Spellbound' this was definitely a pleasant surprise. The story really sucks you into the movie. There were a lot of unexpected twists. My favorite scene was the one were Stillwell goes to the house of Joe Turtle and almost gets arrested for murder. I found the dialogues fantastic. The conversations between Stillwell and Shela, the psychiatrist and Caselle all have a lot of humor. The scene where they're talking about which sound Calvin would have made when he jumped from the balcony, only to offer the image of a watermelon shattering on the street a second later was a nice visual find. Diane Baker and Walter Matthau were terrific and it was nice to see George Kennedy as a badguy. The ending was a bit expected but it deserves a 3,5 nonetheless.

Only the second movie of Joseph Losey that I've seen and now I can honestly say I want to see more movies from him. This one surely isn't as good as 'The Servant' but I didn't expect it to be. The story seems standard but the way it is shot certainly is not. It has a fast pace and the 97 minutes are over before you know it. There's a bit of humor in it as well, from the 'knick knack paddy whack' at the beginning to the scene with the piano tuner. A rather dark picture is painted from the prison life, where guards and prisoners would rat on anybody for the right price. In that aspect, Patrick Magee was great as the sarcastic 'Barrows' who had seen it all before. Stanley Baker was more than average in the leading role, and so was Margit Saad as 'Suzanne'. In the first 45 minutes there isn't a whole lot of action but when the violence is shown, it's rough and not romanticized at all. 3,5*
