Quite simply brilliant film making. You know where the film is going but the journey is a trip worth taking; powerful performances do justice to a very tight and intelligent script and the sense of jeopardy is tangible. If anything the film on repeat viewings feels a bit too short, a bit too eager during its final 10 minutes to wrap things up. I would gladly spend a lot longer in such fine company - 12 Angry Men becomes no less impressive as the years go by.

Wickedly smart and breathlessly paced. It may be one of the few non-horror films that actually challenges its audience physically. Keeping up with Grant and Russell's machine-gun banter and the runaway train of a plot can be a challenge on first viewing, but His Girl Friday is a classic that rewards concentration and further investigation. Commenting on whole raft of political and social themes under the guise of a romantic-screwball-comedy, its commentary is important and importantly funny. Cary Grant is simply outstanding.

Oft-criticised for being too long, but the first of the trilogy is far from ponderous. The plot rollicks along at a healthy pace, does an excellent job of introducing us to the characters, the mythology of the world they inhabit, and dazzles with its pretty epic CGI. Still entertains as the years pass.
