Adaptation
Truly a writer's film.

The Adventures of Tintin 2011,  PG)
The Adventures of Tintin
Despite its more mature-looking animation, this film should still be treated like any other family-oriented story. And to its benefit, with Spielberg at the helm, the movie at times plays out with the same action-packed intensity as any Indiana Jones flick, without neglecting the originality of Tintin.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2012,  PG-13)
The Amazing Spider-Man
While it is getting tiresome to see so many 'gritty' reboots (thanks, Christopher Nolan), The Amazing Spider-Man, to its credit, at least removes itself from the more cartoonish and overly commercial Sam Raimi series. The villain for once didn't look like a Power Ranger and the years since Spider-Man 3 has only helped to improve the action sequences and overall look of our friendly neighborhood protagonist.

The Dark Knight 2008,  PG-13)
The Dark Knight
Easily takes the title as "Best Movie Cased On A Comic Book (to date)". Sorry, Spider-Man 2, but Dark Knight was just that good. Bring on Part 3, whatever they're planning on calling it. Too bad it'll be without Ledger, who definitely and unquestionably left his mark with this film.
27
The Dark Knight Rises 2012,  PG-13)
The Dark Knight Rises
As the third and final piece of Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises brings to the table what the previous two did not: a certain shade of the 60's era TV show. With the inclusion of a sultry, pouty Selina Kyle a.k.a. Catwoman (Anne Hathaway) and of a cartoonish brute Bane (Tom Hardy), the story feels like a slight departure from the direction taken by Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. To the movie's benefit, however, the slower start turns the action back onto the right track, which is as surprisingly brutal as it is tailored to its intended audience.

It'll be a long time until another comic book movie comes along that can top The Dark Knight (2008). The final piece, however, does make an valiant attempt to do so.
28
Be Kind Rewind 2008,  PG-13)
Be Kind Rewind
Leave your expectations at the door, because this film needs you to in order to really pull you into its self-made fantasy. While the plot itself is simple and easy to follow, Gondry flexes his creative muscles to make this story come alive in many ways.

I probably wouldn't have liked this movie as much had I not seen Rushmore or The Royal Tenenbaums first. The writing is brilliant, with instantly quotable dialogue.
41
The Bourne Identity 2002,  PG-13)
The Bourne Identity
This is one of the better true spy movies out there. And one that encapsulates the european film style in a surprisingly good way.
42
The Bourne Supremacy 2004,  PG-13)
The Bourne Supremacy
The plot definitely thickens, as does the amount of action, spy games and twists. Damon actually improves on his already sharp portrayal of Bourne.
43
The Bourne Ultimatum 2007,  PG-13)
The Bourne Ultimatum
This is the kind of film that spy movies aspire to be. Intense action, gunplay, blindingly fast hand-to-hand combat, and a plot with purpose. Who knew cheering for a killer could be so much fun? The best of the trilogy by far. Makes me wonder if Greengrass will go back and re-do Identity. (Dream on.)

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button 2008,  PG-13)
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
The bulk of this movie's attraction is the special effects. Fantastic, they created an old baby and made Pitt age in reverse. However, as cool as an idea this may be, the story doesn't carry its share. A visual treat, no doubt, but a disappointment in substance.
72
The Darjeeling Limited 2007,  R)
The Darjeeling Limited
While the film contains most if not all of Anderson's favourite camera panning tricks, there is nothing taken away from the heart of this movie. The characters are genuine and original, the scenery is gorgeous and the dialogue stands out as is the case with every Anderson film. Brody, newcomer to the usual players, fits in like he's been there since the very start. Instantly timeless. Bill Murray was a nice touch.
73
Dazed and Confused 1993,  R)
Dazed and Confused
Sort of a cult favourite for kids of the 90's? Lots of funny moments, but no real substance.
74
Death Proof 2007,  R)
Death Proof
This is a very cool movie, though it does seem bogged down by less than witty dialogue that may put off a first-time viewer. Still, as a whole, this film stills kicks. Kudos to Tarantino for wanting to do it old school with the stunts.

Live Free or Die Hard 2007,  PG-13)
Live Free or Die Hard
Of course, nothing will ever top the original movie, but this chapter captures the adrenaline-soaked suspense of the first film and adds a new flavour with intricately timed action sequences. I think Wiseman ripped off Casino Royale a little in the execution of the acrobatics, but still manages to make it fit in with the rest of the movie. The final showdown lost a lot of the film's plausibility, albeit for an action movie, but every sequel tries to outshine the original, so I guess over the top ridiculousness is the only to go.

There are few actors in today's Hollywood that have better comedic timing than Ricky Gervais, who really doesn't need to be working anymore with the rampant success of The Office. Still, this movie offers many unexpected laughs and can still jerk a few tears out of its audience.

He may have his brother to thank for the role, but Casey Affleck pulls his weight enough to make it his own. And to have Freeman and Harris as his supporting cast, Affleck proves he can also hold his own with the heavy hitters.

The Happening
Either I'm getting smarter or Shyamalan is getting less mysterious - because I had it figured out in the first 10 minutes (after the 20-minute opening credits). The only thing that surprised me is the level or gore and violence, but even that gets old once the first few deaths numb out any shock.

The Hottest State 2007,  PG-13)
The Hottest State
While the film still manages to capture the clever verbal exchanges between the leads, which it should considering Hawke wrote both the book and treated it for film, the movie seems to lack the heart that is so apparent in Hawke's modest novel. Still, fans of the book will find a likeness and familiarity in the way Webber and Moreno interact with one another, and the lack of star power in the lead roles actually makes it easier to really listen to what they're saying, not how they're playing the part.

The Hurt Locker 2009,  R)

I Heart Huckabees 2004,  R)
I Heart Huckabees
One of the few films I've seen where the music, however scattered, actually carries the story along. Of course, existentialism isn't the easiest or most accessible theme to follow, the cast manages to simplify any complexities through quirky anecdotes or leg-jerk reactions.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
Was a 4th Jones necessary? Perhaps not. Does this movie stand among the other three? Not quite. But then again, that would pretty much be impossible. Instead what you get is a series of throwback references to the original trilogy, along with some new, almost overly exagerated stunts, and a pseudo-scifi feel that honestly doesn't suit Indy one bit. A little too X-Files for my liking.

Inglourious Basterds 2009,  R)

Into the Wild 2007,  R)
Into the Wild
When I read this book 8 years ago, I found it difficult to understand the logic behind McCandless' motivation. Blame it on personal immaturity or undeveloped wisdom. However, Penn's visual and philosophical approach to bringing Krakauer's novel and McCandless' journey to the big screen is nothing short of brilliant. And while some people will find the movie drags on slightly, at least we're at a point in film history where it doesn't hurt to take your time to tell an important story. Easily one of the best films of 2007.

Juno
Contains all of today's indie ingredients: Witty dialogue, wise beyond their years teens, awkward subject matter, sexually confused male leads, lots of road travel. However, sticking to the formula works surprisingly well for this movie - a sweet, strangely non-controversial, story about teen pregnancy and the usual fear that ensues, even though our hero, Juno, seems to be the only one who isn't scared. Brilliant cast performances.

Moonrise Kingdom
For anyone who has seen any of Wes Anderson's previous works, it's become expected to be introduced to a new cast of quirky, somewhat socially inept characters, and Moonrise Kingdom is no exception. Centered around a pre-teen love story, the events unfold all around them as they venture out into the unknown (although still limited to an island). A pleasant film, although not as rewarding as previous gems The Life Aquatic or The Royal Tenenbaums.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End
While the first 30 minutes can be a challenge to follow along with, this final chapter of the PotC trilogy actually brings the most heart to the whole story. The action and violence ignores its Disney connection, and Bloom and Knightley finally show they can keep up with Depp (who seems to actually let them do as such).

The best Pixar movie yet. Not the funniest, but by far the most well-rounded. Definitely worth seeing in theaters.

Renaissance
Unfortunately, I found myself paying more attention to the animation than to the story itself. The only thing sci-fi about this movie is the fact that it takes place in 2054, and Paris has another city built on top of it. Otherwise, this is a simple suspense-drama, however overly dramatic and offers little suspense.
244
Reservoir Dogs 1992,  R)
245
Revolver 2005,  R)
Revolver
How much could I expect after such offerings as Snatch or Lock Stock? Frankly, not much. And with lower expectations, Ritchie's latest hits the mark. The story is noticeably absent of Ritchie's usual speedy dialogue, it's also marred by repetitive narratives and predictable twists. A disappointment.
246
The Road 2009,  R)
The Road
Arguably the most sincere portrayal of what the world would look and feel like in a post-apocalyptic setting. Although the movie itself may feel confusingly barren to fans of the book, casual viewers will likely find it even less interesting. The philosophical struggle offers the strongest point of view in this movie, which may alienate anyone expecting more action.

While it may not be as instantly quotable as Lock, Stock or Snatch, Ritchie's latest is easily his best script to date. And what makes this even better for fans is the potential for a sequel or two.

Kudos to Richard Linklater for bringing in the artists from another one of his films, Waking Life. With a little more star power, this very cool adaptation of Philip K. Dick's novel is a treat to watch.

Seven (Se7en)
One of the most well put together films ever made. A visceral plot, endless suspense, and enough disturbing images to keep you awake at night. Pitt and Freeman play the old cop - new cop tandem perfectly.

Shrek the Third
With the success of the first two installments, it's hard not to go into this one without high expectations. Once again, the animation is spectacular, and the story seems a little slower this time around, but nevertheless, this movie still hits the right notes and manages to deliver some new laughs.

Sicko 2007,  PG-13)
Sicko
With all the heat Moore takes for how his movies are edited to only present facts that paint his subjects in a negative light, the subject this time has a more "this affects us all" notion than any previous work. Although he still tries to make himself out to be an unsung hero, he succeeds only in exposing the harsh reality that the health care system in the US doesn't help anyone but the insurance providers.
273
Signs 2002,  PG-13)
Signs
Out of M. Night's movies, I find this one has the most heart. To have a family as the main focus rather than just Gibson's torn character. Though the ending is a little cheesy, everything else holds up beautifully.

The Silence of the Lambs 1991,  R)

Sleepy Hollow 1999,  R)

Slumdog Millionaire 2008,  R)
Slumdog Millionaire
This one surely deserves its praise as the best picture of 2008. It provides a fairytale plot anchored by tragically real circumstances.

Smokin' Aces 2007,  R)
Smokin' Aces
For a movie with so much gunplay, I found it to be surprisingly boring, with an ending as predictable as gravity.
281
Snatch 2001,  R)
Snatch
Easily Guy Ritchie's best work to date (although I haven't yet seen Revolver.) The story is brilliant, the cast is stellar and be sure to pack a gun in your trousers (for ze Germans.)

Spider-Man 2 2004,  PG-13)
286
Spider-Man 3 2007,  PG-13)
Spider-Man 3
Easily the most disappointing of the franchise. Aside from Raimi and co. upping the ante in the fight scenes and special effects, but the storyline blew and you couldn't possibly care about anyone in the film. This may very well be the last Spider-Man flick I will see.

Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones 3D
Having learned from his mistakes in making Phantom Menace, George makes all new ones in Episode II. He does, however, redeem himself with a little more of the kind of action we all used to see from the original trilogy. Fans were also finally treated to more Jedi light-sabre scenes as well.

Street Kings 2008,  R)
Street Kings
An interesting take on the behind-the-scenes corruption of the LAPD. Reeves proves he can still play a character other than Neo (or himself, for that matter).
298
Sunshine 2007,  R)
Sunshine
Steer clear if you're not a fan of Sci-Fi, especially if you're expecting 28 Days Later in Space. Sci-Fi horror films always have the same fear factors: no oxygen, insanity, ship malfunctions and death caused by all things related. A crew in space trying to save humanity? It's been done. However, at least Boyle offers a new take on what's going to kill us all.

Superbad 2007,  R)

Probably would have been ten times better if they'd dropped all the scenes with the cops, which to me seemed to dull the movie quite a bit. Otherwise, this one's good for a laugh.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

3:10 to Yuma
I'm sure it's a difficult task to remake a movie, even more so with a western. Crowe and Bale both deliver memorable performances, however the film as a whole falls flat.
313
300 2007,  R)

From the same vein as Sin City, a visually stunning movie. There is little to keep track of regarding the plot, but the action sequences more than make up for the lack of dialogue.
314
Thumbsucker 2005,  R)
Thumbsucker
A funny oddball movie. The characters, although a little melodramatic, are warm and familiar. Lou Pucci is excellent in this coming of age flick.

Toy Story 3
A fitting, and ultimately sad, "end" to the Toy Story series. The years since TS2 comes as a tremendous benefit, as Pixar's animation has only improved, giving Toy Story 3 a polished look that was lacking from the previous installments.

Making a modern-day version of Shakespeare, yet keeping the exact dialogue from his play may bore most moviegoers, but the final product works as best as it could. Ye old English is pretty hard to follow, but the cast emote enough to make anyone understand what they're saying. Romance and Leo for the ladies, gunplay for the men. Worth having.

Winter Passing 2006,  R)
Winter Passing
A surprise, to be sure, for a drama to be disguised as a comedy. Deschanel and Ferrell have a great on-screen presence, and Ed Harris is excellent as always, playing an aged Kurt Cobain type (had he not done himself in.)

Plays out a little more like a documentary than a thriller. Fincher could be just reliving his days as a child in San Francisco when the Zodiac first gripped the imagination of every man, woman and child in the 1970s, but he at least keeps it interesting.
