Gregory's Girl
Bill Forsyth's Gregory's Girl is a bit of a cult film now in the UK. I was going to say it is thoroughly British, it's not, it's thoroughly Scottish but the 1980's, comprehensive school and life in general was like that. It really takes me back. It is a certain quirkiness that may not travel well, I'm not sure why not though, I do believe the British are the easiest of audiences or at least the least lazy. If it's good, we'll have some of it. Back to the film, the performances are great, John Gordon Sinclair steals the show by a mile but the supporting cast, specifically his mates, are also rather brilliant. Compare it to an American 'gross-out' teen comedy of today, you can't really can you. Of it's time and well worth a visit now and again. Without trying to sound rude or pompous, I honestly do pity those who don't (or don't want to) get it.
Local Hero 1983,  PG)
Local Hero
Local Hero is a funny little film. Whimsical, charming and odd but odd in the best possible way. The leading performances by Peter Riegert, Denis Lawson and a very impressive young Peter Capaldi (who I see on my Train on the way to work most mornings) are fantastic but it's Burt Lancaster who really steals the show in one of my favourite comedy performances of all time. Any predictability is made up for with an exceptionally witty script. Charming as hell and the epitome of likable.
Comfort and Joy 1984,  PG)
Comfort and Joy
If you look up the word quirky in the dictionary it says ;see films by Bill Forsyth. I've heard people say it's a Scottish thing but I'm not so sure I agree, I think he's quirky by anyone's standards. He is the king of quirk. Comfort and Joy is the age old story of Man find woman, man looses women, man get involved in mafia style ice cream vendor war etc etc. It's easy viewing. It's put your feet up, have a cup of tea and enjoy entertainment. Oh, and maybe an ice cream too.
