La Règle du Jeu (The Rules of the Game) 1950,  Unrated)
La Règle du Jeu (The Rules of the Game)
Complex, politically savvy, entertaining and technically brilliant. Some regard this as the greatest film ever made. I can understand why.

Wuthering Heights 1939,  G)
Wuthering Heights
Another heart-wrenching love story. Very dramatic and at times almost operatic. The performances are stunning (Laurence Olivier commands attention) and Wyler's direction is assured and accomplished.

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington 1939,  Unrated)
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
Another Capra classic with Stewart delivering his iconic performance. A stirring and wonderfully timeless story.
4
Only Angels Have Wings 1939,  Unrated)
Only Angels Have Wings
Classic Hollywood storytelling with a dynamite cast. Grant and Arthur are a joy to behold and Hayworth has a captivating screen entrance. This is one of those hidden treasures made in the Golden Age of Hollywood.
5
Stagecoach 1939,  Unrated)
Stagecoach
The pioneering western that started it all. It put Ford and Wayne on the map.
6
Drums Along the Mohawk 1939,  Unrated)
Drums Along the Mohawk
An epic stirring story of the Westerm frontier. Henry Fonda is perfectly cast. John Ford directs with supreme confidence.
7
Zangiku monogatari (The Story of the Last Chrysanthemums) 1939,  Unrated)
Zangiku monogatari (The Story of the Last Chrysanthemums)
An early Mizoguchi effort with timeless and heart-wrenching characters. Again, the imagery is transcendent.

Gone With the Wind 1939,  G)
Gone With the Wind
This classic movie is old-fashioned and that completely works in its favor. It captures an era that is truly "gone with the wind." The first colored film to win best picture at the Oscars, this truly is an epic and Vivien Leigh has such presence and character, it takes an actor like Gable to hold his ground next to her. Their daring love story represents the modern age (and the modern woman) and history needs to pass by in order for our future to advance. It's both a feminist film and a humbling character study, all amidst an epic civil war. This is rare and consummate film making.

The Wizard of Oz 1939,  G)
10
Young Mr. Lincoln 1939,  Unrated)
Young Mr. Lincoln
Inspiring story of a young lad who made a difference. Fine Americana storytelling.
