No Country for Old Men 2007, R)
A great movie with some fine actors especially Javier Bardem who I have not seen in anything before. He has a certain screen presence and voice that is perfect for this role. A simple plot about a man on the run after finding two million dollars at a drug deal gone bad in the desert, only problem is the ultimate bad ass killer really wants it back! For me this felt like a modern day western which is very intense and well directed. It does have some strange moments and throws up questions about violence, bad people and bad times along the way. I just thought the ending could have been better. However it is well worth a lot of the praise it has got so far. |

Léon (The Professional) 1994, R)
I have finally got round to seeing this and watched the extended version. This is a great film about the relationship between a Hitman and a 12 year old girl left orphaned after her family is killed. It is violent without being too graphic or brutal. This is nothing like your typical action, assassin film and has some great scenes between the two lead characters. A little strange but a classic and I'm not surprised it has reached a cult status. |

The Jackal 1997, R)
Finally got round to seeing this, been meaning to for years! This is a very enjoyable action/thriller centered around a hunt for an elusive hitman. The emphasis is definitely on the action, seeing Willis go through about 10 different looks as a master of disguise was fun. The tension builds as the day of the hit gets closer, will the FBI and Russian agents be able to stop him? This has a great cast including Richard Gere, Sidney Poitier and even Jack Black makes an early film appearance. The whole Manhunt, assassin films have been done bigger and better since this was made. However this is still a classy enjoyable film. |

The International 2009, R)
I thought this was a good conspiracy action/ thriller with a good cast. It's a very entertaining film with a good plot, it's enjoyable watching all the plot lines unfold and the connections made to take them on to the next lead. The film is shot in many locations including New York, Milan, Turkey and almost has a slight Bond, Bourne ultimatum feel to it. The shoot out at the Guggenheim gallery in New York has been one of the best I've seen since Heat. A solid well made film that should appeal to action, thriller fans or fans of the similar films mentioned. |

State of Play 2009, PG-13)
A very good, intelligent, political/conspiracy thriller. It has a strong all star cast including the welcome edition of Helen Mirren playing the straight talking editor. Plenty of good twists and turns along the way as the plot slowly unravels. You watch it in anticipation of what might happen next. One of the better political thrillers I have seen in a long time. |

Ninja Assassin 2009, R)
An all out exercise for the eye-balls! This is a very violent, extremely bloody/gory martial arts film. I think they must use the same techniques used by Asian cinema with almost fountains of blood with every slice and dice of a Ninja sword. Revenge is the plot, of course....way over the top, humanely impossible action scenes, some cool effects and some great fights. It makes Kill Bill look tame in comparison. |

Hitman 2007, R)
This is an enjoyable action film with plenty of cool action sequences, shoot-outs and chases. It's based on the series of popular video games and stays quite true to parts of the games. The way the missions are relayed, location, suit, outfit changes and even some of the tactics used in the game are shown in the film. So this should keep the games fans happy. For everyone else this is just a cool stylized action film, which reminded me of the Transporter films quite a bit. |

Shooter 2007, R)
A great action film with a good plot, lots of shooting, explosions that keeps a fast adrenalin pumping pace throughout. It's a little predictable and Danny Glover talks like he is wearing a gum shield for some reason!? Overall though I thought it is very similar and just as good as The Bourne Identity. So if you like that check this out!! |

Most Wanted 1997, R)
This is a pretty decent action film, not heard of it before but it's pretty good if it was a straight to DVD release. The first 10 minutes are almost identical to Shooter released this year and the story is very similar. If you enjoyed that you should like this......any film with Jon Voight as the bad guy is worth watching!! |

Killers 2010, PG-13)
Quite poor overall I felt, looked like it could have been fun, but misses the mark badly. Not that funny, not many great action scenes and by the end I thought it was just about to get going, then the credits rolled! Knight and Day is much better in every department and came out around the same time, watch that instead. |

Knight & Day 2010, PG-13)
A great over the top action comedy. So much action is packed into such a short film, it never lets up. There is a good chemistry between the leads and some witty dialogue, lots of exotic locations and great stunt scenes. There is enough to keep everyone happy. A mix of True Lies, Bond, and a Rom-com. A fun lighthearted enjoyable film that has something for everyone. |

Wild Target 2010, PG-13)
A decent little English comedy about an aging hitman who lives his life by strict rules and discipline. This all goes out the window when he can't kill his latest target a young con-artist and is aided by a young runaway in trying to protect her. It has quite a few funny moments and some very British humour in this black comedy. A great cast raise the standard and it has a certain charm about it. |

Blood: The Last Vampire 2009, R)
A good story for a film, based on the Anime film....from what I saw almost scene for scene the same? Sadly this is ruined by really dodgy CGI for the blood and gore. Some of the creature design is not so good either, and you'd barely known it had a vampire in it. It has a couple of great sword fights but not enough to save the film. |

Man cheng jin dai huang jin jia (Curse of the Golden Flower) 2006, R)
I was disappointed to be honest, I had hoped this would be as good as Hero. Visually it is stunning, bright and colourful with great attention to detail. However on the action and fighting side it is a let down. Not much happens for the first hour, there are some good fights towards the end but didn't live up to expectation! |

War (Rogue Assassin) 2007, R)
This is a pretty good action film featuring an assassin who seems to be playing off the Triads and Yukuza against each other. There is plenty of action, car chase, shootouts, sword fights and quite brutal to. Maybe some of the fight scenes could have been a bit better or more of them but overall this is a quality film worth checking out. |

The Tournament 2009, R)
A simple if entertaining action film. A plot that has been done quite a few times now, this time based around a group of assassins taking over a small town every 7 years for a battle royale to find the last one standing. Tons of action in this, some good fights, chase scenes and stunts and quite a bit of blood. The standard of the cast including Ving Rhames, Ian Somerhalder of Vampire Diaries, and the pace of the film raise it above average. Very enjoyable eye fodder! |

Wanted 2008, R)
A very enjoyable action film with some great SFX and a brill car chase. You really need to switch your brain off though as it is all very unbelievable. Some might see it as a Matrix wannabe, no bad thing, but it's not up to those levels. Still a good film and worth watching if you like cool, action films. |

The Warrior's Way 2010, R)
Hmm Ninjas Vs Cowboys may as well be the title. Visually very impressive and stylized. Think Sky Captain, 300 meets Crouching Tiger for a slick look. Unfortunately despite a good cast it lacks any punch! The type of story done too many times before. Sadly the action scenes look pretty but have very little action! A real missed opportunity with a better story and longer action scenes it could have been a cult hit. |

Quantum of Solace 2008, PG-13)
A very good action film continuing right on from Casino Royale. Plenty of action, chases and explosions. Has a certain Bourne Trilogy feel to a lot of the stunts and fights. The Bond films now are more gritty, raw without the tongue in cheek humour of the past films. One for all out action entertainment but not the best story for a Bond film. |
|
| 72 |
Diamonds Are Forever 1971, PG)
A very average Bond outing, thought I had seen it before, but maybe I couldn't remember it. There isn't much of it that stands out? Not up there with the best of them in terms of plot, villains, action, stunts and chases. Watching it now it seems very outdated, you can see where Austin Powers got most of the jokes from in this. The only real plus was the Tiffany Case character in very little! |

Austin Powers in Goldmember 2002, PG-13)
It's starting to look a bit dated now, and has a tendency to re-cycle the gags from the first two, and has too many song moments. If you're a fan of the first two you will still enjoy it, but it's not as good as the first one. However I loved the cameos in the opening 5 mins of the film, great idea. |
|
| 77 |
Young Sherlock Holmes 1985, PG-13)
A great all too little known film from '86. Set in Sherlock Holmes school days setting the story background as he becomes the worlds most famous detective. I remember seeing this at the cinema and is just the sort of film full of action and adventure everyone should love. Steven Spielberg was involved in the production and it shows. This film has a feel to it like the Mummy and Indiana Jones films. It also has some very good SFX for the time. If you have missed this film then you are missing out, track it down! |

The Da Vinci Code 2006, PG-13) |

Angels & Demons 2009, PG-13)
A very well made film with a good cast. As good as the Da Vinci code, although prefer that one slightly over this. Good acting performances all round. I hadn't read the book on this so didn't know the story at all, but right from the start I knew who was behind it all. So a bit obvious in that respect. Still a very enjoyable film though. |

Unknown 2011, PG-13)
A very good action thriller with a good cast and high production values. It has some nice touches and good twists along the way. Remanded me in part of a few other films like Frantic, The Fugitive, Taken etc. All good films, unravels a bit quick towards the end, but the suspense up to then is great. Well worth checking out. |
|
| 87 |
Faster 2010, R)
A decent revenge action type of film. It's doesn't beat around the bush, it's quite brutal at times, throw in some fast cars, a quirky hitman, a downbeat cop, you know what to expect from this and it delivers it. It has quite a good supporting cast with a fair few familiar faces, plenty of shoot-outs, fights and the odd car chase or two. A very enjoyable film for your action needs. |

The Losers 2010, PG-13)
A very good film, for some reason from the Title I thought this was more of a comedy, but it's actually a very good action film. It seemed very similar to the A team and a bit like the Expendables, although not quite as violent. It has a good cast and big production, plenty to keep the action junkie entertained. |
