The Sword in the Stone
It is movie night with my little man again, this time we opted for a Disneyfied version of the legend of King Arthur. This follows the adventures of a young pre-king Arthur, serving as a squire in a rundown castle. My 5-year-old was more engaged with Sword in the Stone than he was with the Tooth Fairy to my relief. I suppose all the wizardry and swordplay appealed to him. My highlight: The wizard's duel between Merlin and Madame Mim. Overall it does wield a delightful story even though it is not one of Disney's best.

Shrek Forever After (Shrek 4)
This one is a vast improvement compared to the forgettable, stale third. It possesses a refreshing tight script; it is truly funny, and completely entertaining. I suppose the fourth time is the charm. Rumpelstiltskin, the devious and delicious new villain. He nearly steals the show from our beloved ogre. As for my other favorite character, Puss, he definitely remains the most consistent source of comedy in all of Shrek series. I am looking forward to Puss in Boots next year.

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (Ice Age 3)
Gosh I had tremendous fun when I watched this. I laughed so hard, I felt like a kid again, so mesmerised with the lovable characters. The animation just gets better and better. So what if some people said it is not realistic to have dinos in them as they were long extinct before the ice age, just enjoy for what it is and let your imagination flow. It is a worthy addition to the Ice Age trilogy.

Sinbad - Legend of the Seven Seas
This is an entertaining animated blend of adventure, fantasy, comedy and yes romance.Sinbad has always been an epic character and one of my favorites from classic literature and myth.A swashbuckling adventure saga with a fabulous voice talent of Michelle Pfeiffer. She is Eris, the goddess of chaos and discord. I love her silky smooth vocals. She is Purr-fect.

Up
I love this latest stunning triumph from Pixar. Oh and also their trademark shorts, Partly Cloudy. It was very funny and sweet. Now Up will make you weep and laugh at the same time.
85
Terra (Battle For Terra) 2007,  PG)
Terra (Battle For Terra)
An animation that comes with a message and a strong storyline. This is not a big budget Pixar movie and the animation on human race falls short, but don t sign it off yet, it is worth the trouble. Kids would love it naturally but its more for the older ones. Makes one ponder whether humans can ever learn to coexist peacefully, let alone exist in harmony, with another species.
86
Coraline 2009,  PG)
Coraline
Wow, a portal to a magical world that is both thrilling and terrifying. This film has images of ghost children, macabre and grotesque images that might terrify the younger ones, so I suppose this one is targetted for middle school. Oh peeps, this is a visual treat alright. Brilliant dark story, loved it!! On a final note, the grass is not always greener on the other side.
87
Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2009,  PG)
Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs
The movie title itself promises a yummy and messy good time. Feast your eyes on the oversized culinary delights. I enjoyed the ice cream treats galore, spaghetti tournado and when the sky rained burgers, I wanted to sink my teeth into a Burger!!! Kids will be entranced by the visual sweet treats, I knew my kid was. This is one tasty banquet for the young and old.

Partly Cloudy 2009,  G)
Partly Cloudy
This one is amazing. Although it is a short one but it was good, clever and funny.
89
The Princess and the Frog 2009,  G)
The Princess and the Frog
This 2D musical is a keeper! It is visually fantastic. Absolutely refreshing especially during this 3D mania. This latest animation from Disney is also special because it is a glorious homage to New Orleans with plenty of vibrant jazz music to tap your toes too.

Planet 51 2009,  PG)
Planet 51
Mildly amusing bordering on corny and cheesy.
91
Toy Story 3 2010,  G)
Toy Story 3
An incredible delight that matches up to its predecessors. In the long tradition of the best Pixar movies, it is funny, sweet and engaging. I was genuinely moved and moist eyed by the time the credits rolled, much to the amusement of my 6 year old. Indeed, TS 3 is a triumph.
92
Tangled 2010,  PG)
Tangled
This one's got everything on the fairy tale checklist and it is not only for the girls but there is enough adventure and goofiness to entice the boys too. It is visually spectacular in 3D as it brought out and enhances the film's dazzling color palettes.
Maximus: the imperial warhorse is indeed, the film's funniest and most disarming character. He added the fantastic comedic element to the movie and almost manages to steal the thunder from the other characters. And I certainly like the new direction of the story had taken, it is modern, fresh and Rapunzel is no damsel in distress.

Tinker Bell 2008,  G)
Tinker Bell
"The result of a child's first laugh and that's how fairies are born."

An enjoyable flick, best for the kids under 10. It will probably appeal to girls more than boys. As an avid Disney fan and Tinkerbell, Peter Pan?s fairy companion happens to one of the best known characters in the world, I did enjoy this animation very much. Other than marvelling at the beautiful animation, there is a moral to the story too: Tinkerbell must learn to appreciate the fairy talent she has rather than attempting to change it. She was born as a Tinker Fairy, which this particular workforce is responsible for engineering and repairing innovative items using every day objects in nature. But the grass seems greener on the other side. She wanted to be a Nature Fairy with the flair to control the wind, water and light. Sweet, bright and so colorful.

Despicable Me
Trivia: Massive promotions and advertisements through one of my favorite pancake outlets, IHOP. On the menu are Cinniminions, Minionade, Minion Taters and Minion Berry Pancakes. Oh yum!

Despicable Me is a joy. It is hard to find any complains with regards to an animated flick that is so charming, disarming and witty and succeeds in toppling off Twilight's Eclipse at the US box office. The lead animated meanie Gru, reminds me very much of Uncle Fester from The Addams Family with a wee touch of Dr Evil of Austin Powers. Apparently a sequel had been given the green light.

How to Train Your Dragon 2010,  PG)
How to Train Your Dragon
UNBELIEVABLY FANTASTIC! I was blown away by how great it was. A soaring and an enlivening tale of friendship, protection and self discovery. This Dreamworks animation on the flame-breathing reptiles are marvelous; it is almost up there with its arch rival, Pixar. The sheer variety of dragon creature designs is a riot. I discovered that many of the flying scenes are reminiscent of Avatar, but here they are still impressive in their own right. Everytime, this dragon a Night Fury named Toothless comes onscreen, I was beside myself with happiness. It is a joy from beginning to end.

Disney's A Christmas Carol 2009,  PG)
Disney's A Christmas Carol
I loved The Polar Express and this one, A Christmas Carol was a real treat indeed. However I felt that some eerie elements and special effects of the ghosts would likely to disturb sensitive youngsters. Without a doubt, Jim Carrey is good as Scrooge and he voiced all the key ghosts. Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and and Yet to come too. The animation is lively, a story that never grows old.
113
Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who! 2008,  G)
114
Gnomeo and Juliet 2011,  G)
Gnomeo and Juliet
A cheeky, fun, animated version for kids, substituting red and blue garden gnomes for Capulets and Montagues in the quaint suburbs on Verona Drive. Plus, it was scored to the music of Elton John which provides a suitably magical source of life for the animation. Remarkable voice talents with the likes of James McAvoy as the adventurous hunk of ceramic Gnomeo, Emily Blunt as the over protected daughter Juliet. Other well known talents like Ozzy, Maggie Smith, Ashley Jensen and Jason Statham really brought the lawn furnishings to life. It is not Pixar but still, this is a marvelous and unique effort.

Rio 2011,  G)
Rio
I love it. This animated delight is about Blu, the last rare male blue macaw who is feeling out of place in his city of origin. Perfectly voiced by Jesse Eisenberg at his most affably neurotic. Rio is bursting with vibrant colors and you cannot help but be mesmerized by the gorgeous array of exotic birds in the lush Brazilian rainforest to the pulsating atmosphere at the Carnival. I personally felt that Rio caters to children and their parents simultaneously.
The storyline may be completely predictable, but it is a film for kids and it makes up for it in spirited comedy and visual flair. The musical soundtracks enhances the movie and with a wealth of standout vocal talents, Samba, soccer, sun drenched beaches and Carnival, Rio delivers in spades.

Mars Needs Moms
This happens to be more kid-friendly than the more adult-oriented Rango. Hopefully kids will appreciate their mothers more after watching this film. The story is quite simple and far from reality, but it is packed with sweet and good messages. We need our mothers and she is usually faced with tough times in trying to raise us right.

Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure 2009,  G)
Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure
Another lovely tale hails from the land of Pixie Hollow as the Great Autumn decends. The story focuses on friendship and the power of forgiveness. Tinker B. is entrusted to create a scepter that will hold a colorful stone that will help replenish the pixie dust in Pixie Hollow when the Blue Moon rises. However things went awry with her assignment. The impetuous fairy travels far out of Pixie Hollow into some other unknown land to set things right. Lost Treasure certainly appeals to boys ,my son is evidence of that, he was enraptured with it.

Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue 2010,  G)
Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue
After viewing a dark piece like Animal Kingdom, I needed some colors, mirth and magical fairy dust. Tinker Bell and the fairies of Pixie Hollow was all that. This one contains spectacular animation, a good story with full of adventure and the soundtrack to this movie is a delight to the ears. I truly like this whole theme of unexpected friendships and it is the third installment of Disney's computer animated fairy series. Well done, continue to bring on the faith, trust and pixie dust!!!

Ponyo 2008,  G)
Ponyo
I am discovering Miyazaki's work for the very first time and I am very impressed by his sheer creativity. The revered anime deity who did Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke and Howl's Moving Castle. This is a hand animated wonder and owes nothing to CGI. I am going to make it a point to check out more of his films soon. My son loves Ponyo, we have watched this twice in 2 days. It brought out my inner 5 year old as I devoured Miyazaki's whimsical work. I enjoyed the endearing characters which were supported by an excellent and high profile voice casts like Cate Blanchett,Liam Neeson,Betty White,Tina Fey and Matt Damon.

Sammy's Adventures: The Secret Passage
In 3D, the top notch underwater animation will keep you intrigued, however, the storyline tend to dip into the abyss when focused too much on anti pollution. Plus points, it is an education for the young minds about protecting our beautiful yet fragile environments.

For all the die-hard "Little Mermaid" fans. Still enjoyable with beautiful tunes and decent animation but I do prefer the first one.
153
Spirited Away 2001,  PG)
Spirited Away
An enchanted world brought to life by the anime maestro Hayao Miyazaki. It is an excellent piece of work. The animation retains a rather classic style similar to other Miyazaki films. This time he presents us an animated feature which transports us to a mysterious, surreal and always surprising world of spirits. Like Alice tumbling down the rabbit hole, Chihiro finds herself in a bizarre reality.
The little girl comes to realize that there is more to life than whining, she learns about friendship and devotion, courtesy, compassion and survives by using her wisdom. Overall, it is a memorable piece and I had enjoyed watching it. My only gripe is that the world of Spirited Away was not fully explained, where they are, how and why everything is the way it is.
This film is far too intense and complex for those under eight especially whose imaginations are still being formed.
