Cheeni Kum (Less Sugar)
Amitabh Bachchan as a crochety owner of an upscale Indian restaurant in London.

The kitchen scenes are priceless.

It is a somewhat slow movie, a "chic flick", but it's a sweet love story about older folks. And yes, I have no problems believing that a woman in her mid-thirties could fall for a man like Amitabh Bachchan, even with the character flaws shown in this movie.

While this gets more than a little preachy, I enjoyed the picture of love between an older husband and wife enormously.

Amitabh and Om Puri are excellent in this look at Hindu-Muslim violence. While there are graphic scenes of violence, they are not overwhelming for those who have seen a few war movies. The real story develops outside of the riots, both before and after, and it is well done.

Viruddh... Family Comes First
Wonderful performances by Amitabh Bachchan and Sharmila Tagore. Sanjay Dutt, John Abraham and Anusha Dhandekar also have smaller roles that they play well.

This movie spends a lot of time on establishing happy family life for an older couple. I enjoyed that immensely, others will find it slow going. A nice movie.

Waqt: The Race Against Time
A father-son movie about pushing an adult son to grow up.

I might have had a hard time watching this is the theater, as a few of the songs seemed like lengthy and pointless intrusions even by Bollywood standards. But the main thrust of the plot (and the comedy routines, which were nominated for prizes) were wonderful.

The comedy/drama blend (in chunks like stew) will seem a little odd for those whose tastes are formed by Hollywood, and the first part drags a bit. But I greatly enjoyed this family drama.
