I know of no other film like it. The emotion rawness of De Niro's LaMotta passes off the screen and into you. You seem to be able to connect with him even though there are no similarities. Also, this has go down as one of the most depressing films ever made. Watching LaMotta turn into a train-wreck is anything but enjoyable. Absolutely fantastic. A true masterpiece.

Singin' in the Rain 1952,  G)
Singin' in the Rain
A delightful musical comedy that set the standard for all Hollywood musicals to come. Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen tone-down the cinematic aspects of the film to allow the wonderful singing and dancing to shine. Interesting in that this and "Moulin Rouge!" are the two most popular of film musicals, yet they both don't use original music. Regardless, this is an immensely enjoyable, stupendous musical extravaganza.

Gone With the Wind 1939,  G)

Psycho
One of the all time great horror movies. This film not only chills, it frightens with it's sick characters and haunting cinematography. The character of Norman Bates seems so very innocent throughout the entire film yet he is one of the sickest villains of all time. This film is a masterpiece in ever aspect.
15
2001: A Space Odyssey 1968,  G)
16
Sunset Boulevard 1950,  Unrated)
Sunset Boulevard
A powerful film assaulting Hollywood. Gloria Swanson's performance is icy and unnerving while the film is complimented by William Holden's steady performance as Joe Gillis. Between the great dialog and the strong performances, it is no wonder that this film is so loved. If you want to see Billy Wilder going to max in his assault on American culture, see "Ace in the Hole".

Chinatown 1974,  R)
Chinatown
A brilliantly crafted noir that has you guessing what is going on throughout. As well done as any 40s Noir, this film shows you that in the end, everything doesn't always work out.
22
Some Like It Hot 1959,  Unrated)
Some Like It Hot
Very funny film that seems as more of a spoof of 30s comedies than one itself. Jack Lemmon is dynamite. Marilyn Monroe is quite hot and Tony Curtis is...well he's just Tony Curtis but we won't hold it against him.
23
The Grapes of Wrath 1940,  Unrated)
24
E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial 1982,  PG)

Bonnie and Clyde 1967,  R)
Bonnie and Clyde
Shocking for a film of it's time. Brilliantly acted by the whole cast, though the principles give the standout performances amongst them. A film with very interesting tone, heavily contrasting moments of humor with brutal violence. Strangely enough, this film very much reminds me of a Coen Brothers film.
43
Midnight Cowboy 1969,  R)
44
The Philadelphia Story 1940,  Unrated)
45
Shane 1953,  G)
46
It Happened One Night 1934,  Unrated)
It Happened One Night
Frank Capraā??s "It Happened One Night" is perhaps the epitome of the Hollywood romantic comedy. Itā??s smart. Itā??s romantic. Itā??s fast paced. It has two of the biggest stars of the time (Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert) put in two wonderful performances, complete with witty banter that still has an edge and electric onscreen chemistry. Its serious moments succeed in their seriousness. Its jokes produce genuine laughs. Itā??s shot gorgeously and hardly looks like a film from 1934. "It Happened One Night" has everything that one could hope for in a romantic comedy, and still feels fresh and insightful over 75 years later.
47
A Streetcar Named Desire 1951,  PG)
A Streetcar Named Desire
Very good but disturbing.
48
Rear Window 1954,  PG)
Rear Window
Fantastic thriller. Keeps you on the edge of your seat and when it's over, you want to watch it over again.
49
Intolerance 1916,  PG)
50
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring 2001,  PG-13)
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
A film every bit as worthy as the novel. Strong performances, perfect art direction, character design and artistic vision complement astonishing cinematography and a resounding musical score. Every great literary adaptation should be given the same amount of meticulous attention to detail and love for the source material as Peter Jackson gave to this. The definitive epic of the twenty-first century.

West Side Story 1961,  PG)
52
Taxi Driver 1976,  R)

M*A*S*H 1970,  PG)

North by Northwest 1959,  Unrated)
North by Northwest
One of the greatest Hitchcocks. This film is the best spy thriller you will ever see. Without it Bond would never have happened.
56
Jaws 1975,  PG)
57
Rocky 1976,  PG)
58
The Gold Rush 1925,  G)
The Gold Rush
There's something infinitely charming about Charlie Chaplin's silent films. His character of The Tramp is so innocent, so clumsy and so lovable, very much unlike the real Charlie Chaplin, that he's a real pleasure to watch. His films convey such incredible innocence and whimsy. His 1925 film, "The Gold Rush", is full of many great moments, from the shack teetering on the edge of the cliff to the Table Ballet to the tragicomic romance. Both hilarious and moving, "The Gold Rush" is a staple of filmmaking to be enjoyed by all.

Great acting. I kind of question the purpose of William Holden in the film but I absolutely love Peter Finch's performance. "I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!"

Tootsie 1982,  PG)
Tootsie
A classic Hollywood redemption story. Competently acted, shot and directed. "Tootsie" is not the best comedy ever, but it is definitely far from the worst.
70
A Clockwork Orange 1971,  R)
71
Saving Private Ryan 1998,  R)
72
The Shawshank Redemption 1994,  R)
73
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid 1969,  PG)
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
A bizarre hybrid of buddy comedy, crime film, and western. "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" is the kind of film that is endlessly enjoyable, a film that allows you to really sympathize with and love the characters. Conrad Hall's beautiful cinematography and Burt Bacharach's score complete a solid script. Ultimately, this is the kind of film that embodies what a joy cinema can be.
74
The Silence of the Lambs 1991,  R)
The Silence of the Lambs
A profoundly disturbing, expertly made thriller.
75
In the Heat of the Night 1967,  G)
In the Heat of the Night
A very strong murder mystery. Poiter and Steiger's performances are exceptional. This movie is not overtly preachy. Although the message is a strong component of the film, it is handled very nicely.
76
Forrest Gump 1994,  PG-13)
77
All the President's Men 1976,  PG)

The Apartment 1960,  Unrated)
The Apartment
A delightful film. Bitingly satirical, sweetly romantic and utterly hilarious. Wilder's direction is top-notch, and Jack Lemmon creates one of the most likable characters in movie history. They don't make comedies like this anymore.
81
Spartacus 1960,  PG-13)
82
Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans 1927,  Unrated)
Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans
A visual treat. This film pioneered so many techniques that it goes down as one truly influential film. Murnau is a true expressionist and one of the best early directors. A great film.

Easy Rider 1969,  R)
85
A Night at the Opera 1935,  Unrated)

94
Pulp Fiction 1994,  R)
95
The Last Picture Show 1971,  R)
96
Do the Right Thing 1989,  R)
Do the Right Thing
A tense examination of racial relations in a small Brooklyn neighbourhood. The power of the film lies in how it leaves you with a question, does Mookie do the right thing? Depending on your beliefs, your opinion on this will change and ultimately, this film can gain or lose power depending on what you bring to the viewing.
97
Blade Runner 1982,  R)
Blade Runner
The final cut perfects what is one of the most intriguing films ever made. Ultimately a question of what it is to be human, "Blade Runner" creates such a fascinating world, it is impossible not to be ensnared by it. Deemed the best science fiction film by a general consensus of scientists, this film makes me anticipate intensely twelve years in the future.
