Just Before Dawn
Slow moving but solid creepy backwoods slasher from the early 80s. The films killers are overweight, inbred, creepy, twin brother mountain men who terrorize a group of yuppie campers up in the mountains. The kinda slasher movie where you don't really care about the campers who are on their self indulgent vacations, who only serve as annoying set pieces that make you route for their deaths. The film is very slow moving at parts but if you stick around till the very end...your pay off will be worth the wait.

Blood Cult
Not the worst shot on video 80's slasher but that isn't saying much. The worst I'd have to say would be the 1988 shitfest "The Last Slumber Party. I gave "Blood Cult" one star because they somewhat attempted to make this look like a professional looking no budget movie. All they needed was money for decent film and they would have been set. It's still pretty shitty and bad but entertaining in a dirt cheap kinda way. The movie itself looks like one of those crappy old training videos you had to watch from the 80s when you started your mcjob. The acting certainly screams instructional video everytime someone speaks a line of dialog. Very muggy acting to say the least.

The Last Slumber Party
Not to be confused with the much better "Slumber Party Massacre" series of 80s slasher films, this movie had almost no production values at all and the actors (if you wanna call them that) seemed like people they pulled out of a free clinic somewhere. They were probably offered free pizza and donuts because they sure as shit weren't getting paid for this. The killer is absolutely silly and non threatening, and the gore is pretty much hines ketchup from the looks of it. If you're a slasher completist like me then you'll watch this, otherwise stay the hell away from this shit sandwich that someone had the balls to call a movie. One more thing...to give you an idea of how NO budget this movie is, there's a part where two friends are talking on the phone and they show one girl listening to her friend but you can hear her friend talking to her from two feet away lol I guess they couldn't afford some proper sound editing, so that was their way of showing you what her friend was saying to her on the phone. You also know that you're production designer is doing a bang up job when he's putting Bee Gee's and Sesame Street Posters in teenage age girls bed rooms, for a movie that is set in 1988. Good job guys!!!! To sum it up...this movie is a huge pile of cinematic shit and vomit that's been fucked by a dirty hobo. Also when you hear the girls in this say they're going to go munch out....don't get too excited, that's code word for we're going to eat junk food and not 69 each other. I was let down by this tremendously.

Murderock - uccide a passo di danza (Murder Rock - Dancing Death)
Ever wanted to a see an 80's giallo mixed with the movie Flashdance, directed by one of the godfathers of gore cinema? If not then you'll be well advised to pass this clunker right by. This is supposed to be some kind of murder mystery about someone killing students at a dance school, and there's barely any murder in this at all. The few murders in this are very cheesy looking, boring and virtually goreless. This was directed by one of the goriest directors ever Lucio Fulci and this was right after his major blood and guts period of film making.
I have a feeling he was trying to go back to his Lizard In A Woman's Skin, Don't Torture a duckling period of the early 70's where he had good character suspense drama's that were lite on blood, but this was just flat out boring.
The few good things about this whole movie were some of the beautiful dream like scenes that were shot just brilliantly, almost like Fulci was trying to rip off Dario Argento's Suspiria period, and the music was somewhat catchy for mid 80's dance synth pop.
There were alot of moments that were just like out of Flashdance or the movie Fame, where they will focus on a 5 minute dance sequence when this is supposed to be a murder mystery, Giallo film. It just felt like the there was way too much dancing and not enough murder or suspense or any kind of intelligence in the script writing at all. I also don't think there's anything scary or suspenseful about a killer who uses a very long pin to kill people with either.
This was kind of a turd but I'm still kinda glad I gave it a watch, because I'm a Fulci Completist.

Don't Go to Sleep
Very eerie but enjoyable early 80's made for tv horror about a family who move into a new place to try and forget their dead daughter.
Turns out she wants her sister to know that she's still around in spirit, so she likes to hide out under her bed and freak her right out by saying her name in the middle of the night.
I've heard really good things about this and it lived up to the hype somewhat, I kinda felt like the movie was a little too long for the subject matter.
I think it would have played better in a twilight zone type anthology show personally, but those are small sour grapes...the film in general is very good for what it is.
Valerie Harper and Dennis Weaver do a great job as the parents, Ruth Gordon was an amazing actress and does the stubborn old bitchy grandmother perfectly.
Robin Ignico who played Mary did a great job looking terrified and Oliver Robins as Kevin (The little boy in Poltergeist) did a good job as the snot nose brat brother.
The dead sister Jennifer played by Kristin Cummings was beautiful and creepy all at the same time, which is hard to do especially for a child actor.
The family unit in this is very believable for a made for tv horror and I strongly suggest you watch this if you can find it, because I heard its out of print. This is a pretty good middle of the week watch and you could do alot worse as far as tv horror movies go.

This also makes a good family horror movie because its not overly scary, no foul language and isn't really graphic...but is just creepy enough to be really enjoyable.

The Mutilator
An extremely well crafted and solid slasher from 1983. The killings are slow and brutal, with some of the best make up effects I've seen ever in a slasher movie with this low a budget. The film starts out with one of the most bizarre scenes ever when a house wife frosting a birthday cake accidentally gets shot by her 10 year old son while cleaning his fathers gun, then his father returns home for his birthday. He discovers his dead wife then trys to strangle his son....and doesn't kill him but lets his son just kinda run away. He then decides to drink some Jack Daniels while laying with his dead wife.
One hell of a way to open a cheesy slasher huh? The film then switches gears when it focuses on 6 teens on break from school (one of them the boy who killed his mother) he finds out he has to tend to his fathers hunting cabin. The film really picks up once teens get to the cabin, full of bloody brutal murders (one including a giant fish hook) that will satisfy any gore hound, done by some crazy drifter who lives in the garage of the beach house. The murders are very creative and with characters who you just absolutely hate...it makes it all worth the while when they finally die. Not gonna spoil anything but what an ending...wow
so if you're in the market for a GOOD obscure 80s slasher...you can't go wrong with the Mutilator.
