A brilliant movie from a great director and starring a perfect cast. Every scene is full of drama, intrigue, and excitement. The story is based on true events too. I highly recommend this movie.

Ace in the Hole (The Big Carnival) 1951,  Unrated)
Ace in the Hole (The Big Carnival)
This is my favourite Kirk Douglas movie and my favourite Billy Wilder movie. The story is highly dramatic, suspenseful, and exciting. And the ending is so perfect, I wouldn't have it any other way. I love this movie, it's one of my favourites.
3

This drama is brilliantly fantastic, I loved it. The actors are great, the story is intriguing, and it's based on a true story, what else could you ask for in a drama?

Ben-Hur
This is an incredible movie, a remake, I know, and I'd love to see the original, but Heston is really good in this movie, and the story is epic. This movie is a classic, check it out.
7
The Country Girl 1954,  Unrated)
The Country Girl
If you ever wanted to see Crosby in a dramatic role instead of a comedy, this is the movie to see. He gives a brilliant performance, as does the rest of the cast. The story is realistic and surprising to the end. I highly recommend this movie.
8
Rebel Without a Cause 1955,  PG-13)
Rebel Without a Cause
If you ask me, Dean's character does have a cause, so I don't understand the title, but that doesn't really affect how cool this movie is. This is the first great teen film, and I highly recommend it.
9
A Streetcar Named Desire 1951,  PG)
A Streetcar Named Desire
I cannot write everything I'd like to write about this movie without taking up like a whole page or something, so I'll boil it down to a few major points: first of all, if you're not a Brando fan this movie will turn you into one. His performance and his style are hard not to admire, he's one of the greatest actors. The story is based on Williams' play, of course, which is a very powerful, intense, dramatic play. Transferred to the screen with Kazan's style, it's brilliant. The only problem with the film is that it changes the ending from the play, but other than that it's fantastic. I highly recommend this movie.
10
From Here to Eternity 1953,  Unrated)

All About Eve
A clever story presented in a well made movie with a good cast. It's a bit too long, but otherwise a great movie.
12
Stalag 17 1953,  Unrated)
Stalag 17
This is one of my favourite movies from Wilder, it's a subject that's close to his heart, and is still in the memories of many people: WWII concentration camps. This movie is about a POW camp really, but it's still related to that theme. Anyway, it balances dark comedy and drama so delicately and brilliantly I loved it.
13
The Ten Commandments 1956,  G)
The Ten Commandments
I know it's a remake and I'd love to see the original, but this movie is still worth watching if not for the spectacle, then for the all star cast, or the brilliant way the story is brought to life.
14

Wet Asphalt

26
Paths of Glory 1957,  Unrated)
Paths of Glory
Kubrick's first great movie, I think. It exposes the problems men have with the army and its politics. Douglas is perfect in this movie too. At first I wasn't very interested in this movie, but in the end I realized it was actually a very good movie. If you like Kubrick's work you should see this movie.
27
The Baron of Arizona 1950,  Unrated)

It's a pretty far fetched story, but it is said to be based on a real story, which is really incredible. This movie is dramatic, romantic, exciting, and humorous. I loved Price in this movie.

Douglas plays Van Gogh, and does a great job, if only the rest of the cast were as good as him, this would be a fantastic movie. Still I really liked it, and if you like Douglas you should see his performance in this movie.

Un condamné à mort s'est échappé ou Le vent souffle où il veut (A Man Escaped)
This is a really interesting movie I saw for a class, but I didn't get to see the end. It is really inventive with the sounds and cinematography. If that interests you, I highly recommend this movie.
37
A Summer Place 1959,  Unrated)
A Summer Place
If you've seen Grease you've heard that song about Sandra Dee, Sandra plays against that image in this movie. I liked this movie because I could relate, as many do, to the predicament of having divorced parents who date people and you're expected to like them. Plus, the teenage dilemmas in the story as well. Overall a good movie, I liked it.

41
Acte d'Amour 1953,  Unrated)
Acte d'Amour
A dramatic, romantic, sad, tragic world war two love movie. Douglas is fantastic and the rest of the cast is good too. It's not that different from other war romance movies, but I was surprised by the ending, it was sad. Overall, I think it was a good movie.
42
Peyton Place 1957,  Unrated)
Peyton Place
For the most part this is a really good drama, but it was probably better as a book. You can see that the film makers were trying to push the limits of what they could do on screen at the time, and it's interesting to see how this movie deals with its controversial topics, but the movie is also pretty boring in some scenes. Plus, it's kind of long. Overall it's pretty good, but it could have been better, if they made this movie in the seventies it would have been better i think.
43
A Place in the Sun 1951,  Unrated)
A Place in the Sun
Sometimes this movie was very good, romantic, dramatic, and brilliant, but at other times I was bored, and it was too melodramatic. Overall a pretty good movie, but it could have been better.

47
Hell Drivers (Hard Drivers) 1957,  Unrated)
Hell Drivers (Hard Drivers)
A pretty good movie with good actors, like McGoohan, but a story that's familiar. Still, I enjoyed seeing it on TV.
48
Invitation 1952,  R)
Invitation
If you've read the synopsis, you can tell this is going to be an exciting, interesting movie, which it is for the most part, but then there are some really boring talky scenes as well, that drag it down. Otherwise it's pretty good.
49
Shadows 1959,  PG)
Shadows
This is a pretty good, and very different, drama movie, but it's not all that exciting or intense. Plus, I wasn't familiar or impressed with any of the actors.
50
Houdini 1953,  Unrated)
Houdini
An interesting movie about the great magician Houdini, but it could have been better, maybe more biographical?
51
High School Confidential! 1958,  Unrated)
High School Confidential!
This movie may remind you of reefer madness and movies like it, and it should it's basically the same kind of film, one that's supposed to make you aware of the dark side of the teenage nightlife or something like that. This movie has a good story, but in the end it's lacking something.
52
Stazione Termini (Terminal Station) (Indiscretion of an American Wife) 1953,  Unrated)
Stazione Termini (Terminal Station) (Indiscretion of an American Wife)
Most of the movie is pretty exciting, but it's pretty boring the rest of the time, so it's not that great.
53
Raintree County 1957,  PG-13)
Raintree County
There are a lot of great actors in this movie (keep an eye out for DeForrest Kelly in a small role), but it's a boring civil war romantic drama. Gone with the Wind is much better than this movie. Overall it's okay, though.
54
Friendly Persuasion 1956,  Unrated)
Friendly Persuasion
This movie is very predictable, and sometimes boring, but the drama is pretty intense, especially towards the end, and there are good actors in this movie too.
55
Three Coins in the Fountain 1954,  Unrated)
Three Coins in the Fountain
Not a bad movie, but it's really just another romantic comedy, which just happens to be set in Italy. It has it's moments, but overall it's not a great movie.
56
A Star Is Born 1954,  PG)
A Star Is Born
Garland was already a star, I wouldn't have chose her to star in this remake. I want to see the original movie eventually.
57
All That Heaven Allows 1955,  Unrated)
All That Heaven Allows
Most people point to this film as the greatest fifties melodrama, but that doesn't mean people have to like it, right? I think it's okay, but I really don't want to see it in a film class again!
58
Picnic 1956,  PG)
Picnic
An okay melodrama, it's not bad, but it's pretty boring for the most part.
59
The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit 1956,  Unrated)
The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit

60
The Big Lift 1950,  Unrated)
The Big Lift
Maybe I need to brush up on my WWII history, but this movie was a bit confusing. Clift is good in the movie, but the story could be better. Overall a so-so war movie.
61

Hill Number One
A movie with a great young cast, and an interesting story, but not very well made, overall it's okay.
62
The Fugitive Kind 1960,  Unrated)
The Fugitive Kind
Maybe if Kazan had directed this movie would have been more exciting, I don't know what the problem was, but this movie is incredibly slow and boring. The story seemed good, but I couldn't follow it very well.
63
The Dam Busters 1955,  Unrated)
The Dam Busters
This isn't a bad movie, it's just boring, it would work better as a documentary or something because as a narrative film it's too boring.
64
Carrie 1952,  Unrated)
Carrie
This movie is a depressing, sad, and probably very realistic drama. If you like that, you'll like this movie, but I found it really boring.
65
An Affair to Remember 1957,  Unrated)
An Affair to Remember
These back and forth romantic drama movies get on my nerves and this one is no exception. I do like Grant and Kerr, but they don't do much with the movie.
66
The Bridges at Toko-Ri 1954,  Unrated)
The Bridges at Toko-Ri
A great cast, but a boring war movie. I didn't like it. I'd only recommend seeing this if you really want to see one of the actors in it.
67
Love Is a Many Splendored Thing 1955,  Unrated)
Love Is a Many Splendored Thing
Love really is a many splendored thing, but you wouldn't know it by seeing this movie. Jones plays a woman doctor who's part Chinese and falls in love with an American guy, but she keep stressing over the fact that she's part Chinese as if that should keep them apart somehow, I mean no one can tell she's part Chinese so who cares? This movie got on my nerves.

This movie was too boring, I didn't watch it all the way through.
69
The Pride and the Passion 1957,  Unrated)
The Pride and the Passion
This movie has great actors, but disappoints story wise. It's really very boring and I hated the ending. I only saw it for the stars, and that seems to be the only good thing in it.
70
Some Came Running 1958,  Unrated)
Some Came Running
Some came running out of the theater after seeing this movie, others demanded their money back. This movie seemed like it was going somewhere for the longest time, but just didn't, it's disappointing.
71
Run Silent, Run Deep 1958,  Unrated)
Run Silent, Run Deep
Another boring submarine picture... A good cast, but that's about it.
72
Mogambo 1953,  Unrated)
Mogambo
I found this movie boring, I didn't watch the entire movie I was too bored. This is one of those jungle pictures with a little romance thrown in, and not much more. I didn't like it.
