P) 2012 - Films watched during this year

The start of this year is not really a reflection of my true film tastes, but I'm trying to tolerate some of the genres I I give very little time to. No doubt the rest of the year will get darker and darker.

1
The Paleface 1922,  Unrated)
The Paleface
Not as impressive as most of Keaton's films and not as many quirky funny moments.
2
Pretty Woman 1990,  R)
Pretty Woman
Julia Roberts before the edge set in, there is a slight ironic innocence in her earlier acting.

A nostalgic watch, despite the highly unrealistic storyline and (at the time) it's accused glamourisation of prostitution. Some enjoyable moments to rewatch though and this is a film that does what it's supposed to, it's easy watching, taken with a pinch of salt, with a fairy tale ending.
3
The Dilemma 2011,  PG-13)
The Dilemma
The Dilemma has some really funny moments, the two main characters worked well together and it's easy watching, it did however, have a weak plot and seemed not to reach it's potential.
4
Bedknobs and Broomsticks 1971,  G)
Bedknobs and Broomsticks
A fun adventure, with what was probably quite an impressive mix in 1971 of animation and Actors combined. Very drawn out and very dated now, although the Portobello Market scene was really enjoyable.
5
Along Came Polly 2004,  PG-13)
Along Came Polly
One of the more entertaining Ben Stiller films and one I find Jennifer Aniston enjoyable in. Yes lots of cornyness and predictability, but also quirky and feel good too.
6
Rat Race 2001,  PG-13)
Rat Race
A full star cast with a fun race and bet, great characters - although I don't think I will ever enjoy Rowan Atkinson being Mr Bean like in mostly everything he does. Enjoyed the spin off stories, good fun and entertaining.
7
Happy Feet 2006,  PG)
Happy Feet
An all singing, all dancing film that just oozes cuteness. Happy Feet is creative with an adorable storyline, that puts a little smile on your face. Slightly different to a lot of the feature length cartoons and the music gives it a modern feel.
8
You've Got Mail 1998,  PG)
You've Got Mail
I am tackling my demons and attempting a few Rom Coms, this would usually be the type of film I would side step, but I will admit to liking this a little and finding the two sides of the relationship interesting.
9
The Long Kiss Goodnight 1996,  R)
The Long Kiss Goodnight
It's not exactly a mind blowing film nor is it particularly taxing on the brain, but it's an enjoyable watch and an enjoyable one for Geena Davis
10
Dead Man's Shoes 2004,  Unrated)
Dead Man's Shoes
Gritty, emotionally powerful, raw and what British Films should be made of. With an almost frightening reality to it, none of the cast could be faulted.

This was the film that introduced me to the collaboration of Shane Meadows and Paddy Considine and as a result I became a huge fan of their individual works..

Still very much my favourite British film and proof that good film making doesn't have to have a big budget or high tech effects. Mind games, intimidation and revenge are the power behind this story. I've seen many non-Brits class this as a horror even a Slasher (which is a bit of an insult I feel), but it's too real and passionate to be that.

Finally it's only when you look over this film time and time again you come to understand what a great role Toby Kebbell also played in this.

Yes I never stop praising this fillm, it epitomizes everything that can be great from a low budget film and it's one hell of a revenge movie.
11
Half a Sixpence 1967,  Unrated)
Half a Sixpence
Half a Sixpence is a memorable Musical, but not one of the greatest. Lots of well known songs and of course Tommy Steele is the main attraction. A simple rags to riches tale with a love triangle thrown into the mix
12
The Grey 2012,  R)
The Grey
I've heard lots of mixed opinions on this one and think that most people feel it doesn't live up to expectations. For me, it varies throughout, acting-wise it exceeded my expectations as I'd expected another Action type movie, in fact Liam Neeson in my opinion gave a great performance here.

The problem at times for me, was that it was a little too real, which resulted in a long, drawn out film, with almost predictable outcomes.

There were some very deep moments, which did give the film a bit of a depressing tone, but the moments felt real and for once this wasn't a Hollywood film that concentrated only on the effects and suspense of a survival film.
13
Marley & Me 2008,  PG)
Marley & Me
Hands up! I admit it, I actually liked this film, like so many people told me I would. Much more of a film about family struggles, than the soppy puppy story I thought it was going to be.
14
The Ladykillers 1955,  Unrated)
The Ladykillers
Not as entertaining as the remake I felt, but was good to be able to compare the two, especially with the location differences as well.
15
Silver Streak 1976,  PG)
Silver Streak
Not the funniest of films that this pairing (Wilder/Pryor) have been in together, but easy watching any how. Very much like a lot of train movies, which involve, strange goings on, murder, kidnap and confusion.
16
Man on a Ledge 2012,  PG-13)
Man on a Ledge
Slightly drawn out, but an intriguing plot which mixed a couple of themes. Best role of film goes to Jamie Bell I feel, but good all round easy watching.
17
The Hills Have Eyes 2006,  R)
The Hills Have Eyes
Wasn't worth the remake, was as terrible as the first and adds nothing new to story
18
In the Cut 2003,  R)
In the Cut
This film makes even better viewing second time around, an Erotic Thriller that pushes boundaries and risk taking with a woman who takes voyeuristic fantasies to a new and intense level, beyond her comfort zone, this sort of parodies Meg Ryan's acting career too, this being beyond her comfort zone in image and typecast roles.

A serial killer film to keep the audience focused, almost sub-plotted to heighten the intensity heightens.

Great performances all around particularly Mark Ruffalo, enjoyed Jennifer Jason Leigh's character too and Meg Ryan as you've never seen her.
19
Bully 2001,  R)
Bully
Based on a true story, this is a teen story with a difference. Sexually charged and drug fueled teens seek revenge on the bully who controls them and don't quite think their plan through. Watching the uncut version of this, certainly highlights the extreme levels of bullying and control, which you may otherwise not experience with the uncut version.
20
Secret Window 2004,  PG-13)
Secret Window
Based on a short story of Stephen King's, this is a mind twister of a film with the kind of performance that Johnny Depp can pull off. Watching this now, it does seem much more predictable than when it was released, perhaps because a lot of similar themed films have been made since, easy watching though! My favourite role of John Turturro's.
21
Cold Creek Manor 2003,  R)
Cold Creek Manor
Corny and predictable, but easy watching. Dorff plays the bad guy reasonably well, no boring parts, but could have been helped along with more suspense..
22
Max Payne 2008,  PG-13)
Max Payne
Sort of hit or miss throughout for me. Parts were interesting, revenge is always a good story base, I know nothing about the game it's been adapted from, but feel it would have been more enjoyable to model it on the graphic novel adaptions. Some important clues were easily guessible and parts were action packed, others a little static.
23
Analyze This 1999,  R)
Analyze This
Quite a funny take on the pre Soprannos Crime boss in need of therapy, which allowed De Niro a familiar genre to provide the comical slant. An enjoyable performance from Billy Crystal. The first half is definitely better than the second, but it's still worth a watch.
24
Amusement 2008,  R)
Amusement
Teen Horror with nothing new to offer. Tensity levels are at a low, gore factor, non existent - a complete waste of time.
25
Cass 2008,  Unrated)
Cass
It may not be directed by Nick Love, but apart from the racial element, this could have easily have been one of Love's films. Whilst it's based on a true story, we have seen it all before, the racial qualities bring out the unique story for Cass being brought up by white parents, but all in all it's another story of football violence.
26
Running Scared 2005,  R)
Running Scared
One problem roles into a series of very unfortunate events in this thrilling Action movie. A grittier role than most of Walker's and one that suited him well. An evolving story, with some great visual effects from the camera shots. You don't have time to be bored!!!
27
Mighty Joe Young 1998,  PG)
Mighty Joe Young
It is all very Hollywood, but a watchable film none-the-less. A remake of the old black and white classic and a landmark of how far film effects have come during that length of time.
28
Blitz 2011,  R)
Blitz
Jason Statham aside, Blitz comes across as a great British Drama, that you would perhaps expect to see as a Drama series. Whilst one of my top guys, Considine is in the film the star role most certainly goes to Aidan Gillen in this film.

Statham invites the Hollywood version of himself to merge with himself in on the British scene and the contrast of the Action guy within a gritty tale, just about passes, although little moments could have been toned down to fit in with the rest of the films style.

The story had me glued to the screen and although it's not without it's flaws, it was a very enjoyable film.
29
Twilight 2008,  PG-13)
Twilight
It's true, I never quite thought I would be writing a review for Twiight and yet I find myself drawn to Kirsten Stewart as a young Actress. In fairness to this film, it was much better than I had anticipated, with amazing colours that projected from the nature within the scenes, pretty typical teen film at times, but a story that held me til the very end.
30
Los Cronocrímenes (Timecrimes) 2007,  R)
Los Cronocrímenes (Timecrimes)
An intelligently written, complex time travel story, a fascinating plot, which will have your mind working overtime trying to keep up with the backtracking and new scenarios.

Great to see time travel theme tackled within a more natually acted cast and theme rather than a typical Sci-fi setting..

Enjoyed it equally on both viewings.
31
Going Home 1971,  PG)
Going Home
For it's time, it's a gritty film with it's subject matter and all and it is one of those films that once you start to watch, you want to continue watching to find out what happens rather than being entertained throughout.
32
The Girl Next Door 2007,  R)
The Girl Next Door
The strange thing about this film is that the acting (particularly from the main character) didn't start off great, but it does improve through the film. It's shocking that this was a true story and actions that took place are truly disturbing.
33
Vicky Cristina Barcelona 2008,  PG-13)
Vicky Cristina Barcelona
A pleasant surprise, I expected this to be quite the chick flick, instead was a great travel film, with culture, romance, ups and downs and experimental feelings, totally enjoyed it.
34
Erin Brockovich 2000,  R)
Erin Brockovich
An intriguing true story, I rarely give Julia Roberts credit, but think it was a part she took well. The passion for the human side of law was the whole substance of this film. Aaron Eckhart was truly unrecognisable.
35
The Artist 2011,  PG-13)
The Artist
I feel myself being in a familiar territory when it comes to a big award winning film, I have found parts of this film really good, more so in Direction and the novelty of it's theme, but when it came to story line I felt really disappointed, leaving the Cinema feeling that it had been way over rated. It took quite a while to warm up and did feel quite stretched out at times.

Jean Dujardin was every inch a well chosen lead in the film and was the interest throughout. The first part was a great reminder of Singing in the rain.

Enjoyable, unique, stylish but not quite the masterpiece every one has said it was.
36
Donnie Brasco 1997,  R)
Donnie Brasco
A good film which I re-watched recently. Undercover cop who gets close to Gangsters
37
Flipper 1996,  PG)
Flipper
An easy watching, feel good, kids film.
38
The Horseman 2008,  R)
The Horseman
To call this mindless violence would be inaccurate. Whilst incredibly violent in a very gritty way, the acting is of high standard and the storyline realistic, the violence is the outcome of a man pushed to his limits and is destroyed by events.

The main character was really impressive, a great revenge flick, with a dark character that you can empathise with.
39
Mystic River 2003,  R)
Mystic River
Directed by Eastwood and boasting an all star cast of some of Hollywood's most talented this is a fairly gritty and believable tale with some pretty decent performances all around. A murder mystery, vigilante theme with a built up back story when mixed together make for intense viewing.

A film that will no doubt make a big impact!
40
Crimetime 1996,  R)
Crimetime
A tough one to rate - this is a slow paced Serial Killer film, which perhaps comes from quite an original angle, in parts the acting is terrible and the film feels much older than it actually is and yet there was something that just about held me until the end. Pete Postlewaite's character became more interesting toward the end and that may have been the reason why, Stephen Baldwin, was, hmmm, interesting, quite weird, but not in a good way.
41
Knowing 2009,  PG-13)
Knowing
Surprisingly enjoyable (coming from a usual non-Sci-fi person). The film got better as it went on and some of the effects were pretty impressive.
42
The Mechanic 2011,  R)
The Mechanic
The Mechanic is an Action Thriller with just the right mix of slick, more realistic Action and the more Hollywood explosive Action. The story line is less one-dimensional that a lot of Action movies and the not knowing who is on who's side kept the film exciting throughout.

Jason Statham and Ben Foster make an impressive duo and this is certainly my favourite Statham Action flick to date.
43
The Next Three Days 2010,  PG-13)
The Next Three Days
When this film begins, it looks like it's going to be filled with the pretty people, yet soon after, it transforms into a thriller that becomes faster paced as the story evolves. Certainly a film to keep you entertained throughout and there are various dimensions to the film to keep the interest of the viewer.
44
Flashdance 1983,  R)
Flashdance
Such a well known 80's film and yet this is my first viewing! Of course the iconic soundtrack is instantly recognisable, as are some of the dance moves and there is some kind of back story with edging it's way through, but true enough it is corny and tacky like many 80's films, yet something drives me to watch them.
45
Let the Right One In 2008,  R)
Let the Right One In
I have to admit I watched this film, knowing nothing about it at all and had I known it was a vampire film, perhaps I wouldn?t have watched it with the same enthusiasm, however this is the most naturally acted Vampire film that I've seen to date.

Two fantastic child leads and the storyline came across more like a genuine murder tale.

Slightly stretched out in parts, but most certainly worth the watch. The accompanying music is simply beautiful.
46
The Likely Lads 1976,  PG)

Heidi Fleiss: Hollywood Madam 1995,  Unrated)
Heidi Fleiss: Hollywood Madam
I've read a few reviews on this film and I have to say I disagree that this is not up there with some of Broomfield's best.

Every person within this documentary is fascinating and throughout you never quite know who is telling the truth and who is just out to outdo the other person.

Some great angles covered here from a viewing prospective, Hollywood madam, secret clientelle list that could be revealed, sex,, drugs, power, informants, conspiracy. The documentary makes for a great subject matter along with some very direct questioning back and forth from Nick Broomfield.

In truth this documentary doesn't reveal a whole lot from Heidi's prospective and many questions still remain a mystery to that effect, however, two particular characters of interest do feel the spotlight with tales that you are never quite sure is the truth.

An unexpected view was that of Heidi facing prison and her mindset leading up to that, regardless of the charges, this showed a fear and possibly the vulnerable, human side of her, in fact out of the three characters, Heidi, doesn't seem to come out of this as the worst.

Juvenile Liaison 1976,  Unrated)
Juvenile Liaison
Of all Nick Broomfield's controversial subject matters, I found this at times the most uncomfortable to watch. To a certain extent you know what to expect from some of the other subject matters, but I can't help feeling the two Police Liaison Officers, were just a little power crazy and full of their own importance. Whilst it shows a big gap between the way things are handled much differently in today's times and opens up huge debate as to which is deemed to be better, I would be interested to find out how all the children in the film had got on in later years.
49
Juvenile Liaison 2 1990,  Unrated)
Juvenile Liaison 2
A revisit to the people previously featured in the first Juvenile Liaison, uncovers that the original was banned from public viewing. Interesting to catch up with the Juvenile's all these years later, but harsh to see that none had really moved forward much.

The two interviews that were of course of most interest (both police officers involved) lead to a disappointing anti-climax. Slighly disturbing watch in some respects.
50
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind 2004,  R)
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind
I love twisted mind of the writer of this film. It wasn't always an instant favourite with me, but this is a film I appreciate more the older I get.

Both Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet out of their comfort zones when it comes ot how we are used to seeing them on screen, but both were enjoyable characters.

The concept of the clinic makes for an interesting focal point and twist on a film of Romance.

Entertaining, unique, makes you dust off the parts of your brain you rarely get to use!
51
Antz 1998,  PG)
Antz
Such a metaphorical film for many issues. Woody Allen was a great choice for the main character here, a great film to teach the kids about individuality.
52
Mary and Max 2009,  Unrated)
Mary and Max
A totally unique and original Animated film. Quite gritty for an animated film, it's tone is quite depressing, but so human in an ironic way. The relationships are captured with a true insight and depth.
53
Lockout 2012,  PG-13)
Lockout
A very average film with a lot of predictability, there are some good moments in this, but it is a little drawn out in parts, feel it's a bit of a come down for Guy Pearce's abilities, however the Actor who took this film for me was up and rising Joe Gilgun who made his character memorable.
54
Jindabyne 2006,  R)
Jindabyne
Watch on LF
55
Sin City 2005,  R)
Sin City
An amazing film with regards to the graphics, this really was like a comic strip coming to life. A huge star cast, the most impressive character for me being Marv.
56
Hide and Seek 2005,  R)
Hide and Seek
I found this much more enjoyable, second time around, shows yet another side to Robert De Niro's acting skills and young Dakota Fanning is just great in all her roles too, I think this was possibly the best film she has been in. Quite spooky in bits, but it's a great watch and a great twist too
57
The Rose 1979,  R)
