Some laughs, Johnny Depp impeccable as always, but 2 hours of constant sword fighting wore anorexically thin very quickly. Time better spent rewatching Pirates 1 or 2.

Third Star
Delicately and beautifully photographed, hilarious and heart-breaking in equal measure and absolutely flawlessly acted. No-one is particularly likeable and you constantly wonder how this group of friends ever actually became friends, but isn't that just life? The chemistry and certainty of the characters never falters. Third Star stays just the right side of sentimental and I can't descibe how much I adored this. Support this under-distributed film and see it!

'Awkward', 'geeky' main protagonist? Check.
Wannabe band? Check.
'Alternative' hairstyles? Check.
Emphasis needed on 'awkward', 'geeky' and 'alternative' because it tries so hard? Check.
So a large proportion of the 'alternative' MTV generation is going to like it? Check.

Within ten minutes the overt LOOK-THIS-FILM-IS-MEANT-TO-LOOK-LIKE-A-VIDEO-GAME!!!!!! mentality went from cute to patronising and deeply annoying. I'd rather just have spent 112 minutes watching Michael Cera stationary with 'VS' stamped on his forehead, and 'that' look on his face.
The heavily edited fight scenes became tedious after... the first one. I suppose this is a failing on my part seeing as the entire narrative is based upon fighting seven deady exes so maybe this film just wasn't for me to begin with.
The only redeeming factor for me was the hilarious Keiran Culkin as Scott's gay flatmate. His fight commentaries made watching slightly, so slightly more tolerable.
The soundtrack isn't half bad either.
Overall, so MTV, so self-conscious, it just really, really wanted to be cool.

Paranormal Activity 3 really is more of the same for fans of the first two installments. But rather than unexplained hauntings, it's started to venture down what I would call a "mythology/demonology" route, much in the same vein as The Blair Witch Project. In fact, judging from PA3, I wouldn't be surprised if any future installments take on that similar pseudo-documentary format found on The Blair Witch Project DVD.

PA3 takes the two sisters from parts 1 and 2, and explores a disturbing time in their childhood. The frights and jumps are constant, and the addition of the swivel camera really rackets up the tension. For a series that started off as a singular, one-off supernatural horror film, to have got to part 3 and still remain interesting with so much backstory still left to be explained, it's a rare treat.

The Human Centipede 2: Full Sequence isn't a film I'd recommend to, well, anyone. I have extremely high tolerances to graphic visuals, but Full Sequence is for a very niche audience. I won't get nightmares from this but I'd imagine there are a lot of people who would. I just find it fairly maddening that such a beautifully photographed piece is much too sickly rich and genuinely shocking to be seen by many people.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
When you can see this rendition of Sherlock Holmes for what it is - a stylish and fast action film which happens to use Conan Doyle's famous characters (a film that isn't trying to be a character central piece like Granada or BBC Holmes so why expect it to be?), it really is quite brilliant. And hilariously funny in all the right places; Sherlock refusing to ride a horse and instead taking up a donkey. Stephen Fry's Mycroft nonchalantly wandering around his house naked. Sherlock's brilliant urban camouflage suit, blending into the walls of Watson's office. Gladstone the dog. Little things that make this it's own kind of Holmes world.

And all this is filmed and edited beautifully. The final chase sequence through the forest is quite something, cutting between fast and slow, perfectly in sync with the suitably industrial score again composed by Hans Zimmer.
All in all, it's slick and considered and smart and it knows it.
