Mystic River
The film is filled with too much anger and violence, for a movie that points the finger at irrationality, and it seems blinded the same way the main character played by Penn does.
Plus it focuses on pain and intimacy instead of social context and triggers, and it is more thoughtful in his own composition rather than about its contents, with an easy hasty ending which doesn't quite solve a thing, but it's tricky and dangerous.
However actors and directing are awesome.

I've seen Insomnia, not knowing it was a remake, which would take away part of my attention.
The beginning is epic indeed, I mean, Alaska with all the misty atmosphere, the old Pacino, the young Nolan (who can get you immediately into the plot)... The film has nearly every reason why something good should come out.

But as it goes, it becomes the classic Hollywood thriller , where there are good and the bad, and it is after to force the twist: the same Williams (really out of hand, even if it is to appreciate the courage to use it as a bad guy) reveals it several times.
But the worst may be the final, even if I can't find another way for a movie like this one, in which it would have ended if not eliminating the badass.

The movie seems to go back and becomes progressively less complex, a bit like the previous 'Memento', and the only character who has a real characterization is the protagonist, in fact we do not know virtually nothing of the murderer, except to the threats. It would have been interesting to see who the "enemy" is, or the relationship with the character played by Hilary Swank, but more importantly, that the insomnia could play a major role.

All that remains is to be satisfied with the Nolan direction.

The pianist is an inspired movie, but we already knew that Polanski was a genius, ain't we?
Anyway, despite Adrien Brody, and the perfect atmosphere/cast, we only see the touching story of a pianist who manages to escape thanks to a German, who is then punished, being deported to Russia to die.
Yet I believed that the Holocaust affected millions of people killed by German SS.
I must be pretty naive. Definitively.

"Dist-suburbia" is a similar piece of work to teens movies of the eighties as Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Breakfast Club, or Mystery Date, films about cinema connected to technologies such as Rear window, scream and American Beauty, and the Joe Dante's movies The Hole and The 'Burbs.
Indeed there isn't much original in it, and it just deals with the usual clichés of the suburban American teen life, in the absence of parents.
The real problem is that on the side of thriller, the film is a bland try, especially the ending, which seems an unnecessarily change, because it's not prepared the release of a serial killer, and the plot twist does not seem to sort any effect, so that no real disturb is caused.

The film is a modest revival of the works of Charlie Kaufman, but on the contrary, it does not ask questions, nor it seeks to respond.
the package is welcome, but it leaves a sense of frustration, incompleteness, and lack of depth. Even Paul Jamatti seems not sure about what the film is about. It is like a film about soul, but without soul.
It remains to hope that the forthcoming work of Sophie Barthes may be more mature and courageous.

Second round of the Millennium saga of Stieg Larsson.

This time you lose the mistery, but the plot it is still centered on the disfunctional families, and some little trick of the hackers, but this time it it is more austere, and it's linked to the uncanny and supernatural, and inspired by the fantasy universe (Frankenstein, The Crow, Two-Face), so that the nice character of Lisbeth Salander comes out weakened, while the brands that are advertised emerge (machinsosh, sony vaio, etc).

The incessant rhythm of the film is always good, and resembles a little the Bourne series, as well as good actors, but it does take itself too seriously, becoming very similar to B serials , passing on TV

Some things that bring some concerns:
- the father-daughter relationship is not played in an emotional way, besides the fact that we don't know much about their past;
- Lisbeth that save herself coming out of the tomb where she was buried alive and has the strenght for the last ax duel;
- Lisbeth's half-brother, is invincible besides sounding like a caricature of the 80s wrestlers.

"Man Hatar kvinnor som" the first chapter of the saga Millennium, works on a giallo based upon the disappearance of a girl in a wealthy family, where after 40 years it is still suspected murder, until that the end reveals the secret.

The film takes a good tension, and it's well shot, but is especially strong for the veracity of his main character, the young Lisbeth Salander (played credibly by Noomi Raptor), a tormented girl always exploited and escaping from something, even though perhaps it lacks a strong blow to the final scene (it reminds me too much of the Shawshank Redemption, and it is pretty obvious).

I wonder: is it possible today to make a good film for a broad public and find consensus without mentioning or showing: Nazis, domestic traps or cages for prisoners, sadomasochism, bisexuality, dysfunctional families and so much violence?

Certainly, it is simplistic, how it is portrayed the easily win of a ordinary girl against part of estabilishment (also because this way it's like to save the rest, cataloging the culprits as rotten apples, while it's the whole tree which is rotten).

However, this third chapter seems to me the most complete of the saga Millennium -although they contain large gaps- because it more boldly describes how society overrides the most defenseless people, without leaving the slightest way to defend themselves.

The plot is quite interesting as well as intelligent, even if it does repeat often what was said in previous films, but perhaps the biggest problem is the villains who are either too old or too dull, and do not keep up with their power (it's still a conspiracy we're talking about...!).

The other problem that's quite important is the relationship between Noomi Raptor and Michael Nyqvist, which is just touched on in the final scene: the two are simply on the verge of resolving their relationship for the duration of the film.
Not even the character of Lisbeth (always Noomi Raptor) has a lot of space, as it was instead in the first chapter.

Another problem is style: the choice is definitely to limit the action as much as possible, unlike the earlier film, which was the most lively, and make the story through the atonement of the sins of the protagonist, but this happens again without finding anything too much original or that departs from the television action series, or the classic courtroom drama.

The most important merit -apart from the courage- it is certainly stimulating reading the books by Stieg Larsson, a true literary event in Europe as worldwide.

The main problem, among a myriad of problems, it is clearly that this film (just like any other film produced today), lacks of the classic spy movie or even previous bond films atmosphere, and it seems it could really be any action movie, with no real distinguishing features.
And you can't certainly blame the cast, who defends itself well.
While I would still have chosen Clive Owen (Craig definitely has a butcher face) Daniel is not entirely a bad actor, and he is cut out for this kind of movies.
The other stuff that emerge are naturally that this film is totally impersonal under the artistic point of view (do we need to mention the screenplay? :D), and above all (what is worst) that it is almost cold, with no moment of warmth.

Recommended only for those who can't live without action movies
