The Departed
I don't care what anyone says about this film, I believe it is Martin Scorsese's best. It fully earned it's best picture win and Scorsese fully earned his Best Director trophy. In my opinion, this is the best mob movie ever made and certainly the best movie taking place in Boston. Everything is perfect, the cast, which I believe to be the best cast in cinema history, the soundtrack, obviously the directing, the cinematography, the acting, it's just a perfect film.
9
The Big Lebowski 1998,  R)
10
Pan's Labyrinth 2006,  R)
Pan's Labyrinth
This is one of the most well shot films I've ever seen. Everything is perfect. The cinematography, the score, the art direction, and especially the directing. This is probably the best foreign language film I've seen, and it is definately Guillermo del Toro's best.
11
Children of Men 2006,  R)
12
Eyes Wide Shut 1999,  R)
Eyes Wide Shut
as with all of Kubrick's films, much better the second time around.
13
Red Cliff (Chi Bi) 2009,  R)
Red Cliff (Chi Bi)
The first part of John Woo's epic masterpiece is his magnum opus, and the best film released in the last five years. If part 2 manages to be just as astounding, then this will be one of the greatest films ever made.
14
Forrest Gump 1994,  PG-13)
15
Ace Ventura - When Nature Calls 1995,  PG-13)
16
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest 2006,  PG-13)
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
It amazes me to see that 86% of Flixter users liked this film when probably about 90% of the people who I know hate this film. As far as I know, I am the only person on the planet who prefers it over the first. Not only do I prefer it, but I think it is highly superior. In my opinion the story, effects, action, and humour are all much better than its predecessor. But, like I said, I seem to be the only person who thinks so. I don't think there is anything that bothers me more (when it comes to film) than the overall reception of this film by both critics and fans. Maybe I just have horrible taste in movies.
17
Saving Private Ryan 1998,  R)
18
The Prestige 2006,  PG-13)
The Prestige
In my opinion this, not The Dark Knight, Inception, or Memento is Christopher Nolan's masterpiece. I also believe that this movie has the best twist in any film I have ever seen. Having said this, The Prestige, unlike Se7en or The Sixth Sense, is more than just a movie with a great twist.
19
Ed Wood 1994,  R)
Ed Wood
the best movie about making movies that i have ever seen
20
Black Swan 2010,  R)
Black Swan
Finally! A 2010 film that I feel comfortable giving a full 5 star rating! This film most definately deserves it. Natalie Portman deserves all of the praise and accolades she has received for her performance. A true masterpiece, Aronofsky's finest.
21
No Country for Old Men 2007,  R)
22
Synecdoche, New York 2008,  R)
23
World's Greatest Dad 2009,  R)
World's Greatest Dad
"World's Greatest Dad" starts out like the typical, modern, gross-out comedy, but quickly changes into something completely different. It becomes one of the most original, darkest, and well made comedies that I have ever seen. Not to mention that it is the best film Robin Williams has been in since "The Fisher King" twenty years ago.
24
Donnie Darko 2001,  R)
25
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind 2004,  R)
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind
This is one of the most amazing and emotional films I have ever seen. Easily Charlie Kauffman's best.
26
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 2001,  PG-13)
27
Spirited Away 2001,  PG)
28
Minority Report 2002,  PG-13)
Minority Report
This is one of the best sci-fi movies ever made. Very similar to Blade Runner, but then again both movies are based on works of literature by the same author: Philip K. Dick. Top notch visual effects and a brilliantly complex moral questioning film.
29
Cloud Atlas 2012,  R)
30
Pulp Fiction 1994,  R)
31
Cidade de Deus (City of God) 2003,  R)

37
Django Unchained 2012,  R)
38
Happy Gilmore 1996,  PG-13)
39
Broken Flowers 2005,  R)
40
The Thin Red Line 1998,  R)
The Thin Red Line
This one's a grower, but it's not for everyone. It is much slower and less action packed than most war movies, but all in all it's one of the greatest films in the genre as a result of Terrence Malick's brilliant direction and unique take on storytelling. And boy does this film have great cinematography.
41
United 93 2006,  R)

The New World 2005,  PG-13)

Hugo 2011,  PG)
50
The Master 2012,  R)
51
Marvel's The Avengers 2012,  PG-13)
Marvel's The Avengers
It is quite rare for a film to be as hyped as "The Avengers". It is even rarer for those films to live up to there hype. "The Avengers" doesn't live up to its hype, it goes above and beyond.
Joss Whedon proves to have been the perfect man for the job, as his script is always hilarious, never taking itself to seriously. His direction is commendable as well, resulting in what is easily the best film based on a Marvel property, and the most entertaining comic book film ever made.
52
The King's Speech 2010,  PG-13)
53
Gran Torino 2009,  R)
54
Heavenly Creatures 1994,  R)
55

Prometheus
Stick to sci-fi Mr. Scott, it's what you do best.
57
Rubber 2011,  R)
58
Troy 2004,  R)
Troy
although it is a terrible adaptation of the iliad, it still has gorgeous visuals, and some of the best action scenes i have ever seen. Lets be honest, every other adaptation of the Iliadhas pretty much sucked. Why? One major reason is because they have tried to follow Homer's story to closely. There are some works of literature that can only be turned into good films if they change virtually everything, and this is a one of them.
59
Fight Club 1999,  R)
Fight Club
The first time I saw Fight Club, I loved it, but for all the wrong reasons. It had seemed like a good, bot not great, film up until the mind blowing twist. After the big reveal I loved it. Quite frankly, there is nothing I like better than a good twist. Having just watched Fight Club for the third time, I have realized the twist is still great, but it is just a miniscule part of the film as a whole. What really makes Fight Club great is the amazing dialogue. It is among the best In the history of cinema, rivaling that of a Kevin Smith or Quentin Tarantino film.
60
American Beauty 1999,  R)
American Beauty
Wow, I am reaaly surprised how much I liked this movie. I have had several opportunities in the past to watch this film, but it just never interested me. I probably would have never seen it if I hadn't become a big Kevin Spacey fan of late. It was nothing like I expected. I expected this film to be shallow and cliche, but it ended up being complex, and I believe, somewhat of a thriller. Truly one of the best films ever made.
61
Crash 2004,  R)
Crash
It amazes me at how many people seem to hate this movie. I wasn't expecting anything special, and was blown away. This film doesn't get the credit it deserves. Credit is due to the Academy for getting it right.
62
The Mummy 1999,  PG-13)
63
Sin City 2005,  R)
64
Rush Hour 1998,  PG-13)
65
Casino Royale 2006,  PG-13)
66
Dead Man 1995,  R)
67
Snatch 2001,  R)
68
Watchmen 2009,  R)
Watchmen
I came in to "Watchmen" not knowing what to expect. Everyone I had talked to who had seen this movie said it was awesome and that I had to see it. I was skeptical, however, due to the fact that none of those people had read or been a fan of the graphic novel like I am. I was worried that the movie would be nothing like the graphic novel, mostly because I thought it was unfilmable. I was wrong. "Watchmen" portrayed its graphic novel better than any other film I have seen based off of a comic book or graphic novel. It is extremely complex, and probably the most sophisticated superhero film ever made. I was stunned at how great a performance Jackie Earle Haley gave as Rorschach, who might be my favorite superhero. Besides that, all I can do is strongly reccomend this film.
69
District 9 2009,  R)
70
King Kong 2005,  PG-13)
71
Beasts of the Southern Wild 2012,  PG-13)
72
Iron Man 2008,  PG-13)
73
Drive 2011,  R)
74
Red State 2011,  R)
Red State
While I have loved most of Kevin Smith's films, I have found that they are good because of his excellent writing, not so much his directing. That isn't to say his direction was bad, just that it was nothing spectacular. However, this film is great because of Smith's wonderful script AND his great direction. This all from the man who turned down the offer to direct "The Green Hornet" because he didn't want to, nor did he believe he had the ability to direct an action scene. Here he manages to make one of the best action thrillers released in recent years, whilst finally proving that he has great range as both a writer and director.

OSS 117: Le Caire Nid d'Espions (OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies)
Brilliant! Vastly more entertaining than "The Artist". This is perhaps the best spoof I have ever seen.

92
Dogma 1999,  R)
93
Inception 2010,  PG-13)
Inception
this is a very difficult movie to review. I really loved this movie, but at the same time, there were a couple of little things I didn't like about it. the biggest was the ending. i felt the simple and predictable ending was out of place in a movie that was otherwise the most complex movie I have ever seen. the other thing I don't like is how everyone is saying that everything in this movie is so original. there are so many things in this movie that were obviously inspired by the matrix. other than those to minor gripes, this was a near perfect film.
94
Amour 2012,  PG-13)

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy 2011,  R)
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
"Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" is the most tightly woven, intelligent, and demanding espionage film I have ever seen. In order to reap it's great rewards, a viewer must have extreme patience and a considerable attention span. Personally, I missed several of the intricacies and subtle plot points upon my first viewing. This is a film that demands at least a second viewing. Even with all this, the highlight of the film may be Gary Oldman's performance, one that has been largely unappreciated, probably due to it's subtlety. Never before have I seen an actor give a performance so subtle, appearing so cold and calculating, while still managing to convey both great power and emotion.
