Mini-bio: An actress of almost eerie, otherworldly beauty and simmering intensity, Zhang Ziyi burst onto the international film scene with her role as the governor's daughter in Ang Lee's acclaimed martial arts... read more adventure Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Stunningly convincing despite her lack of martial arts skills, Zhang's dramatic talents were equally impressive, and she was soon cast in such highly regarded films as Zhang Yimou's Hero and big-budget stateside efforts as Rush Hour 2. Born in Beijing to a working-class family that included her economist father, kindergarten teacher mother, and an older brother, Zhang found creative outlets early with dancing and gymnastics. At the age of 11, she was accepted into a secondary school affiliated with the acclaimed Beijing Dancing College. Though her skills earned Zhang numerous awards there, she soon became frustrated with the pressures of school and began seeking other creative outlets. At 15, she enrolled in Beijing's Central Drama Academy, where she finally seemed to find her niche. Fate sealed the deal when the aspiring actress auditioned for a role in a shampoo commercial directed by acclaimed filmmaker Zhang Yimou, and after working with her, the veteran director thought her ideal for the lead in his upcoming movie The Road Home (2000). Cast as a young girl who falls in love with an older teacher, the film won international praise, in addition to numerous awards. If The Road Home had been her breakthrough, her next film, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, brought her even more exposure and fame. With few martial arts skills, Zhang utilized her dancing to perfect the moves needed for the physically challenging role. Though the actress began learning English in hopes of breaking into the Hollywood scene, her first major role in the West, ironically, found her speaking her native Chinese (which was subtitled in English). Parts in such high-profile Chinese features as Zu Warriors and Musa (both 2001) followed, and in 2002, Zhang once again stepped before the camera for Zhang Yimou in the visually dazzling, historical martial arts drama Hero. In addition to earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film, Zhang Ziyi was nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the Hong Kong Film Awards. In 2003, she took the lead for the political drama Purple Butterfly. Later that year, she accepted a supporting role in the popular action comedy sequel My Wife Is a Gangster 2. The actress appeared in no less than three films in 2004, including Wong Kar-Wai's romantic sci-fi drama 2046. In addition to her film work, Zhang has been the spokeswoman for numerous products, including Tag Heuer, Maybelline, and Visa. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Ziyi Zhang Bio

Actress and moZiyi Zhangdel Ziyi Zhang was the second child born to parents Li Zhousheng (her mother, a kindergarten teacher) and Zhang Yuanxiao (her father, an economist). Raised with her older brother in an urban, working-class part of Beijing, Zhang was originally interested in dance and gymnastics. After some friends expressed concerns that she was too frail, her parents encouraged her to take up dance and gymnastics to build up her strength. Ziyi spent years training in traditional Chinese folk dance, first in elementary school at the Xuanwu District Children's Palace, and later at the prestigious Bejing Dance Academy. Ziyi eventually won the Performance Prize at the 1994 Taoli Cup National Youth Dance Competition. Ziyi won the prestigious Hundred Flowers award for her performance.

Behind Ziyi's Name

In the media Ziyi is referred to as Ziyi Zhang and as Zhang Ziyi. The reason for this is that personal names in Chinese culture are different to personal names in Western cultures.A Chinese name is written with the family name (surname) first and the personal name (first name) last. Therefore, in China she is known as Zhang Ziyi, and this is how she has been known for most of her career. But some Chinese people who emigrate or do business with Western countries, sometimes adopt the Westernized name by reversing their own, so she becomes known as Ziyi Zhang. Ziyi stated that the name change was her publicist's idea of a way to appeal to Western audiences and she has asked the Western media to refer to
her as Ziyi Zhang from now on, however some still call her Zhang Ziyi.

Ziyi Zhang Trivia

Different Faces of Ziyi
Ziyi thinks that perfect happiness is to love and be loved

Ziyi says that her principal trait is perserverance

Ziyi has said that her biggest success has been learning a different language

The thing that she treasures most is her relationship with her family. She says it's "very strong and full of love".

Ziyi loves reading children's books in English, she says she can "devour six in half an hour". Although the classic Chinese writers will always be amongst her favorites. In particular Cao Xueqin's literary masterpiece 'Hong Lou Meng', in English 'The Dream of the Red Chamber'

Ziyi's heroes are "ordinary people who do extraordinary things"

Ziyi is afraid of rats. When people say to her 'We'll be ready when you are", that also frightens her

The talent that Ziyi would like to have is to "play the piano with virtuosity"

One of the things which Ziyi hates the most is being misunderstood, she says it makes her "feel very uneasy"

In 2006 Ziyi said the next dream she would like to achieve is "to learn how to cook snails like they do in restaurants in France"

Ziyi has laughingly said, while learning English her favorite words were the swear words. She also loves learning idioms
ZZ: "Yeah, idioms-I love to learn those, but it's hard to figure them out."

Ziyi believes pressure is a good thing as it pushes you to work harder

When Ziyi goes to the supermarket she tells her mother not to shout her name, but to call her "Little Dragon" or "Little Flower" instead, so that nobody will notice her

When the audition for 'Memoirs of a Geisha' came about, Ziyi only knew how to say simple things in English, so her agent taught her how to say "Hire me please!". Which is what she said to producer Steven Spielberg, his reply "Oh, my God, who taught you that?"

Ziyi thinks that the biggest misconception people in the U.S have about China is that the people all look the same. Or that "they think a particular Chinese restaurant has such good food, and then I go and try it and say, 'That's not Chinese food--we have much better food than this!' [laughingly]

Although Ziyi has been in many martial arts films, before Crouching Tiger, she had had no previous training, so she incorporated a lot of her knowledge of dance into the fight sequences. She says before doing the film she didn't know she had that kind of power.

Speaking from a tourism point of view, Ziyi's favorite destination is Australia.
ZZ: "Australia is scarcely populated, the scenery is beautiful, I particularly like its sea. I grow up in Beijing, chance of laying glimpse on the sea is a rarity, I really like the profundity and vastitude of the sea."

During the 6 months that Ziyi worked with Ang Lee on 'Crouhcing Tiger', her only desire was for him to give her a hug for a job well done, as he done with another actress.
ZZ: "I waited and waited, and every single day when I finished work I promised myself I'd do better the next day so he'd hug me. Then the last day we had a wrap party, and everyone was so happy and so tired, and he told me I worked hard and did a great job. And then he hugged me and I started crying. I will always remember that hug."

Ziyi's ideal lifestyle is one of freedom

Ziyi hardly knew a word of English when filming her first American movie 'Rush Hour 2' so co-star Jackie Chan had to translate everything the director said to her

When Ziyi was younger she had no idea that she wanted to be an actress. She dreamed of being a kindergarten teacher like her mother, as she loved children. Or a flight attendant, she thought and still thinks that they are gorgeous. They were elegant and could speak both English and Chinese, so she wanted to learn English and become one of them.

The thing which aggrieves her most of all, is lies

Ziyi says she enjoys receiving letters from fans, because, not only do they ask for autographs, but more of them show curiosity in chinese cinema and an interest in chinese culture.

"I am very pleased whenever reading these letters, because I feel my movie is more than an entertainment to them, it's also of unusual significance. Maybe it's a medium, igniting their interest in chinese, China's ancient culture, chinese costume etc. Usually their interest is expressed in a straightforward and sincere manner."
