To me, a miracle is the most wonderful unexpected thing that can happen. The thing that you hope for most that you least expect to happen. The great Surprises in life that come your way.
 | Born "Richard Earl Thomas" in New York City, the son of Richard Thomas (born circa 1925) and Barbara Fallis. His parents were each dancers with the New York City Ballet and owned the New York School of Ballet.Thomas was seven when he made his Broadway debutin "Sunrise at Campobello" (1958) playing John Roosevelt, son of FDR.
He soon began his television career. In 1959, he appeared in the TV presentation of Ibsen's "A Doll's House" with Julie Harris, Christopher Plummer and Hume Cronyn. He then began acting in daytime TV, appearing in soap operas such as "The Edge of Night" (as Ben Schultz, 1961) and "As the World Turns" (as Tom Hughes, 1966-67), which were broadcast from his native Manhattan.Thomas received his first major roles in film, appearing in the 1969 motion pictures "Winning" with Paul Newman, about auto racing, and "Last Summer" with Barbara Hershey, a summer romance movie.
He became nationally recognized for his portrayal of John 'John-Boy' Walton, Jr. in the 1970s TV series "The Waltons", which was based on the real-life of writer Earl Hamner Jr. He appeared in the 1971 pilot The Homecoming, and then played the role continuously in 122 episodes until 1978. Thomas left the series and his role was taken over by Robert Wightman, but Thomas returned to the role in three Waltons TV movies, 1993-97. Thomas won an Emmy for Best Actor in a Dramatic Series in 1972. He attended Columbia University in 1973, but did not graduate. | |

Thomas` advice for young people who want to act for a living:The odds of making it in the acting business are bad, but that is no reason not to do it.
To love what you do, what your works is, is one of the greatest joys of life.

| | Richard`s voice on Mercedes-Benz Spot? Yes it is!
Richard Thomas visited the Hartford`s Tapeworks recording studios to recod voice over tracks for Mercedes-Benz latest radio and TV Spots.
The session was recorded using ISDN technology, which allowed Thomas to voice the spots in Hartford while being recorded by a production team in NYC. An in-studio monitor screen provided a video reference for the TV spots, giving Thomas the feel and attitude needed for his delivery.
Television and movie actors are often chosen to voice commercials even though their voices aren’t always recognized by the average viewer when their face isn't shown on-screen. Mercedes-Benz chose Thomas as the voice of their new campaign, much of which promotes the Certified Pre-Owned sector of their dealerships. Thomas warm and soothing voice credibly amplifies Mercedes’ pride in their cars and engineering skills while affirmatively answering the old chestnut; Would you buy a used car from this man? |

- Speaks some Chinese, after changing his major at Columbia from Literature to Chinese. He changed his major from Literature to Chinese because he attended Columbia during the time that the Vietnam War was underway and as well as the controversy surrounding it. He was frustrated with the anti-war demonstrations and how they were interupting his educations and he felt the best way to avoid such disturbances was to change his major to Chinese.

He met Italian singer Luciano Pavarotti ( 1935 -2007) when he came to give a concert in Los Angeles and the two of them got on so well they became great friends. Richard Thomas said Pavarotti was the first person to visit his triplets in the Hospital. "
- The Hospital staff insisted he wear didn't fit all the way up his arms, so he walked from the corridor with his arms out like Frankenstein. And when their mother came in he applauded her saying 'Brava! Brava!"
- Apparently Luciano stayed with Richard and his family frequently when he was in the USA and cooked some marvellous meals in the Thomas's kitchen.

A great Christmas present. Harder than finding a pencil under the refrigretor, I`ll tell you.
Jump in the lake with all your clothes on. To get paid for jumping in the lake- that`s what this business is all about!
Playing a bad guy is just Delicious
We`re manning up production as much as we can, . We can only produce many.
There is a prejudice in the business against softer, family-oriented work. It tends not to be as commercial. It tends to appeal to the C and B counties in the heartland of America which is not the area of greater consumerism. The People who love family pictures and family programming tend to get less of what they like for many, many reasons. Economic reasons of course usually being number one. But there`s nothing like a piece of family entertainment when it`s sucessful, because when family entertainment is successful it runs all the way across the lines. It`s just that most people, frankly, are thinking about edgier, more action-oriented stuff for young people between the ages of eightenn and thirty. Those are the ones buying most of the products. It`s unfortunate but it`s the way it is.
The Lord has been good to me, and I think it's my duty to give back. I watch TV, and I want to cry it's so sickening and terrible what is happening.
I don't want a business to be in the hands of an individual.”
If the tour had not gone ahead, the result would be that investors and producers would become more and more risk-averse. This is a freedom- of-speech issue.
Our motto is `join in and have fun` and we want people to come along and enjoy themselves.
We want to go out with a bang, not a whimper,
You know, that's the way it is. We're up here for people's enjoyment. If they don't enjoy us, there's nothing you can do about it. If they do, great. And if you get enough who do, it doesn't matter that there are some who don't."
Every time I've seen Measure, I've thought, Well, this is just a fabulous, kind of mysterious part, Angelo's journey is deeply satisfying, and Peter gave me permission to play it how I wanted-very quiet, very clear, very simple, not some tour de force role, which would be very easy to do-to really play it like an earnest young Republican untested in the world, who gets out there and suddenly everything he thought was secure turns to jello.
On the Movie :All Quiet on the Western Front
- I'm really proud of that movie
On Stephen Kings It
- That was just so much fun!
I went into Angelo with a very clear feeling about how I wanted to approach the role. But Puck just turned out to be a great surprise and a great gift-a great switch.
On its a Miracle:
- We`ve done hundreds and hundreds on our show. It`s amazing to me. It made me realize that, no matter how bad it seems out there, something terrific is happening to somebody every day.
On his Character as "John Boy" in Waltons
- I think any great success that an actor has is going to be a double-edged sword at some level.
- If I should live to 95, it will be "John-Boy Dead at 95." You know it and I know it. But that`s OK with me, because I loved that show. For a while, it irritated me.

Creatively satisfying as well as being my livelihood, and being able to do theatre, which is very costly but which is also very precious and essential for me. It isn't for everybody and it shouldn't have to be for everybody. I don't think any actor should be made to feel guilty for not wanting to be in the theatre. I think that's just wrong. I do it because it gives me pleasure, pure and simple. I'm happier onstage than anywhere else in my working life. "That doesn't mean I don't like working in front of the camera. That's a marvelous challenge and it's very satisfying, and it's been a big part of my life. But I do this for the pleasure. Richard Thomas
