• Name: Renée O'Connor
  • Date of Birth: February 15, 1971
  • Place of Birth: Katy, Texas, USA
Mini-bio: A former Mickey Mouse Club starlet who has since gone on to craft an impressive career in film and television, Renee O'Connor gained widespread exposure thanks to her small-screen role as Xena's (Lucy... read more Lawless) trusty sidekick, Gabrielle, in the hit television adventure series Xena: Warrior Princess. A Texas native who discovered her love of acting while performing at Houston's Alley Theater at age 12, the aspiring actress attended Taylor High School before refining her skills at the Huston High School of Visual and Performing Arts. After donning various cartoon costumes at Six Flags amusement park, O'Connor made the move to Los Angeles and soon landed a role in the Mickey Mouse Club serial drama Teen Angel (a revival of the original series Spin and Marty). Though a subsequent appearance in an Arnold Schwarzenegger-helmed episode of HBO's Tales From the Crypt ultimately ended up on the cutting room floor, early exposure came soon thereafter with a role in the 1991 television miniseries Changes. Following appearances in a pair of features and made-for-television films, O'Connor caught the eye of producer Rob Tapert during an audition for a role in the 1994 made-for-television adventure Hercules and the Lost Kingdom, and in addition to also casting her in the direct-to-video sequel to partner Sam Raimi's Darkman, the duo agreed that she would make a great addition to a new show they were producing. Her participation in the hit series Xena: Warrior Princess proved invaluable, and O'Connnor and Lawless' chemistry gelled right from the start. Following the cancellation of Xena: Warrior Princess, O'Connor would continue her feature career with the 2000 comedy drama Rubbernecking. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Since her first role as a caterpillar during a Theatre on Wheels production at age 8, Renee has had a passion for acting. At age 12 she began to study acting at Houtson's Alley Theatre, later attending Houston High School of Visual and Performing Arts but transferred back to her original Taylor High School in order to graduate with her friends.

Renee - MacBeth photo Renee's real career began at age 16 in a commercial for McDonalds, later for Exxon, followed by a string of other commercials and odd jobs such as Porky Pig at Astroworld and an aerobics instructor in LA, but then in 1989 she landed a recurring role in the serial 'Teen Angel' featured on the 'New Mickey Mouse Club'. This show led to another Disney serial 'Match Point', her first film role in 'Black Snow' and an episode of tales from the crpyt (directed by Arnold Schwarzenegger), which was later cut. After these roles Renee went on to portray an imperiled student on the NBC special 'The Flood', Cheryl Ladd's daughter in Danielle Steel's 'Changes', a woman captured by Shawnee Indians in ABC's 'Follow the River', an actress who hires Rockford as her bodyguard in 'The Rockford Files: A Blessing in Disguise', Julie Wilkes in Disney's 'Adventures on Huck Finn', and the daughter of a murdered couple on an episode of NYPD Blue (among others).

Renee's performances caught the attention of (Xena: Warrior Princess) producers Robert Tapert and Sam Raimi who were in New Zealand filming a series of movies based on the mythological hero Hercules. After an 'over the top' performance, Renee was cast as Deianeira in 'Hercules and the Lost Kingdom'. They were so impressed with her performance opposite 'Hercules' star Kevin Sorbo that they signed her on for a starring role in 'Darkman II: The Return of Durant'.

She also played her character Gabrielle on 'Hercules: The Legendary Journeys' in four episodes. As Xena became increasingly successful and the seasons progressed Renee wanted to try her hand at directing, and so she shadowed director TJ Scott on season 4's episode 'Adventures in the Sin Trade' where her character did not appear. After this Renee went on to direct the final episode of season 4 'Deja Vu All Over Again' and season 6's 'Dangerous Prey'.

Since Xena ended in 2001, Renee took on the role of Lady Macbeth in Shakespear by the Sea's version of Macbeth on 27 June 2002. The play ran for five weeks and was initially located in San Pedro Point Fermin Park and then toured the beach cities in Los Angeles. She took the lead in Eric Escobar's Sundance short film 'One Weekend a Month' (2004) and co-starred with Bruce Campbell in the Sci-Fi channel movie 'Alien Apocalypse' (2005). Renee produced and starred in the independant film 'Diamonds and Guns' (2007) which was the first feature film made by her production company ROC Pictures, she also starred in 'Ghost Town' (2007) and 'Boogeyman 2' (2007).

Renee is still close friends with Xena co-star Lucy Lawless and the pair regularly attend Xena conventions (Renee appears every year), she also attends some of Lucy's concerts. She joined Lucy for her two night 'Sold Out' performance at the Roxy in LA, Lucy sang and Renee danced, she repeated this during Lucy's New York concerts 31 May (2007) - 2 June. Renee made her singing debut in Hollywood at the Roxy Theatre, January 2008, when she sang with Lucy to a sell out crowd.
