Her names Radha and Rani are of Hindu and Indian origin respectively. Her Mother is a model and designer and her Father is a film maker, they divorced during her childhood. she attended St Michael's Grammer School in St Kilda, Melbourne.
She began her career starring in the ABC show Sugar & Spice (1988). This lead to two separate roles in Neighbours beginning in 1994 over a three year period.
She entered films with Australian Comedy Love and Other Catastrophes (1996) which was nominated for five Australian Film Institute Awards. In 1997 she grabbed Hollywoods attention by starring in High Art and Love and Everything Put Together which were both Independent Spirit Award winners.
This led to higher profile work such as a role alongside Vin Diesel in Pitch Black and opposite Colin Farrell in Phone Booth. She also starred in Man on Fire with Denzel Wahington. As well as playing J.M Barries long suffering wife in Finding Neverland for which the cast recieved a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Cast in a Motion Picture
To Mitchell's surprise she was then invited to star in the Woody Allen film Melinda and Melinda by the Director himself. She then starred alongside Josh Hartnett in Mozart and the Whale a film about two Asperger's sufferers finding love.
2006 saw her rise further in popularity with the role of Rose Da Silva in the movie adaption of the videogame Silent Hill (2006). Over the next two years she starred in Rogue (2007), Henry Poole is Here(2008), The Children of Huang Shi(2008) and Thick as Thieves(2009).
Recently she starred alongside Bruce Willis in the Blockbuster Surrogates(2009) as well as independent film The Waiting City (2009), which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival. She can also be seen in the remake of The Crazies(2010)
