Most of Vitti's late-'50s film appearances were inconsequential compared to her portrayal of the remote, "uninvolved" leading lady in Michelangelo Antonioni's prize-winning L'Avventura (1960). She also was featured in Antonioni's L'Eclise, La Notte, and Red Desert. Her one bid for Hollywood stardom was Modesty Blaise (1966), which though directed by Joseph Losey, was a significant critical disappointment. Aside from her appearance in Luis Buñuel's highly acclaimed Le Fantôme de la Liberté (1974), Vitti's subsequent film work has been relatively undistinguished and sporadic. As a teenager she starred in amateur films before training Rome's national Academy of Dramatic Arts, graduating in 1953. She also attended Pittman's College before touring Germany with an Italian acting troupe. Vitti went on to win acclaim in the films Ridere Ridere Ridere (1954) and Le Dritte (1958) before landing a part in Michael Antonioni's L'Avventura (1960). Vitti won critical praise with a string of Antonioni films, including La Notte (1961), L'Eclisse (1962), and Red Desert (1964). She only appeared in two English speaking films which were Modesty Blaise (1966) and An Almost Perfect Affair (1979). In 1974 she won the David di Donatello Award for Best Actress for the film Polvere di stere (1973). Though she was lovers with Antonioni during the 60's, she has been with Roberto Russo since 1975.
