Maureen was born in Bundorran , County Donegal, while her father was doing a summer season there. She was brought up in Glasgow. She is the eldest for 4 children, 2 brothers Mark and Paul and sister Louise who was also an actress best known for playing Laura Johnstone in Emmerdale.
Maureen's father is well known Scottish vauderville entertainer Johnnie Beattie who is currently playing Malcom in Glasgow soap River City.
Maureen's late mother was former model and agent Kitty Lamont.
Maureen trained at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow where she won the James Bridie award in her final year there.
