One of the show's most naturally gifted singers, the 20-year-old Burleson, TX, native's vocal talents were discovered when she was in seventh grade, when her school's choir teacher heard her singing and urged Clarkson to join the choir. After high school, Clarkson cultivated her voice and went to Hollywood to make her name; she appeared as an extra on an episode of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, but no other opportunities materialized. Upon returning to Burleson, Clarkson worked at a movie theater, promoted Red Bull energy drinks, and ultimately worked as a cocktail waitress at a comedy club before entering the American Idol contest. One of 10,000 aspiring singers, Clarkson distinguished herself not only with her big, surprisingly mature voice, but also with her down-to-earth charm and sense of humor; at one of her auditions, she switched places with judge Randy Jackson, who did an impromptu version of R. Kelly's "I Believe I Can Fly." Over the course of the 13-week show, her consistently strong performances of songs like "Respect," "Natural Woman," "Stuff Like That There," and "Without You" earned Clarkson enough audience votes to claim one of the contest's two finalist positions. After singing "A Moment Like This" and "Before Your Love," both of which were written for the show, Clarkson won the American Idol contest with 58 percent of the audience's votes. In addition to the show's prize of one million dollars and a recording contract with RCA, Clarkson secured a deal with Creative Artists Agency and several bookings, including the national American Idol tour and a performance of the national anthem at the September 11 commemoration at Washington, D.C.'s Lincoln Memorial. Despite her newfound fame, Clarkson opted to remain in Texas rather than move to New York or Los Angeles. Her first single, "A Moment Like This," was released just two weeks after she won the contest and quickly earned platinum sales. Clarkson's debut full-length, Thankful, was released in spring of 2003, just in time to coincide with the second season of American Idol and right before the American Idol movie, From Justin to Kelly. Breakaway followed in late 2004 and was a huge success, selling over five million copies (making it the third best-selling album of 2005) and spawning the hit singles "Because of You," "Behind These Hazel Eyes," and "Since U Been Gone." That song and Breakaway earned Grammys for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Best Pop Vocal Album, respectively, at the 48th Annual Grammy Awards in early 2006. Clarkson continued her busy touring schedule that spring and summer and announced plans for her third album. In 2007, Clarkson released My December the studio follow-up to Breakaway. Notable as Clarkson's first foray into writing or co-writing most of the songs, My December had a darker, even more rock-oriented edge than its predecessor and even featured a guest appearance by punk icon bassist Mike Watt. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi

Kelly ClarksonKELLY CLARKSON

Born April 24, 1982, Kelly rose to fame when she appeared as a contestant on the first season of the popular TV reality series, American Idol, which she subsequently won.

Kelly Brianne Clarkson was born in Fort Worth, Texas, but grew up in Burleson, Texas. Her parents are Jeanne Rose and Stephen Michael Clarkson. She has a brother named Jason, and a sister named Alyssa. Kelly is of Greek, Irish and Welsh ancestry. Kelly's parents split up when she was 6, and her sister went to live with her aunt and her brother left to live with his dad. Kelly stayed with her mom. Jeanne remarried later to Jimmy Taylor.

Kelly grew up with her family always struggling financially, which taught her to be very financially independent. Kelly originally wanted to become a marine biologist, but in grade 7, a teacher of hers heard her singing in the hallway and told her to audition for the school's choir, even though Kelly told her she had no formal vocal training. In highschool, Kelly performed in various musicals, in which she realized her true passion for music and decided she wanted to pursue a career singing. Kelly eventually got classical training, hoping that it would lead her to get college scholorships. When she did graduate highschool, she was offered full scholorships at 3 Universities, but she had decided at that point that she could go to college at any age, and really wanted to try to enter the music biz since she had already written some of her own music.

Kelly had a variety of jobs throughout highschool and afterwords. Many odd jobs, including mowing lawns, helping out her step father who was a contractor, and working at a movie theater. She also worked as a door-to-door vaccuum salesman, which as she once described "It Sucked".

After winning American Idol, Kelly made a movie with fellow American Idol contestant, Justin Guarini, entitled "From Justin to Kelly". It only grossed $5 million at the box office in North America though, and it was highly panned by movie critics.

Kelly has three albums and is releasing a fourth early this year.

Kelly's first album, Thankful, was very much a pop album. Her singles included A Moment Like This, which was her winning single from American Idol; Miss Independent, which was a track that had originally been slated to be on Christina Aguilera's album at the time and was later cut; Low, which was her third single; and finally, The Trouble With Love Is, which appears on the Soundtrack for the movie Love Actually, and in which a music video containing scenes from the movie was shot.

Kelly's second album, Breakaway, is by far her most popular album - it yielded five top 10 singles, certified 6x Platinum in the US, and has sold over 13 million copies worldwide. Her singles off the album include: the title track, Breakaway, which she co-wrote with Avril Lavigne. The track appears on the Princess Diaries 2 soundtrack, and the music video features scenes from the movie; her second single, Since U Been Gone, is the most successful single from the album, and garnered Kelly a Grammy award for "Best Pop Female Performance" - she also won for "Best Pop Vocal Album" at the same time. Since U Been Gone is arguably one of the most popular songs of this decade, and probably the most easily recognizable Kelly Clarkson track, even if you're just the occasional radio listener. Kelly's third single, Behind These Hazel Eyes, broke TRL's (Total Request Live, a show on MTV) record for the number of days at #1 for a female artist - 33 out of 50 days. Because Of You, her fourth single, became the biggest worldwide hit, being the first to reach number 1 on the world chart show, and stayed there two consecutive weeks. Because of You was later rereleased as a duet with Kelly's idol, Reba MacIntyre. Kelly's final single off the album, Walk Away, earned her the title of most played artist in 2006, even though that was the only single she released that year.

Kelly's third album, My December, was mostly panned by critics, but still managed to sell 2.2 million copies worldwide. She released three singles from the album: Never Again, Sober and Don't Waste Your Time - although, music videos were only released for the first and last singles.

Kelly is currently set to release her fourth album this year, with her first single being, "My Life Would Suck Without You".
