(Click here for help.) |  Joseph Leonard Gordon-Levitt was born on February, 17, 1981 in Los Angeles, California, USA to parents Dennis Levitt and Jane Gordon. Joe began an acting career when he was 4, appearing in a stage production of "The Wizard of Oz". He soon was then approached by an agent and began doing commercials. He landed his first TV movie role "Stranger on my land", alongside Tommy Lee Jones in 1988. That same year he appeared on the television shows "Family Ties" and the remake of "Dark Shadows". Joe's feature film debut was in the Robert Redford film "A river runs through it", and it won him a Young Artist Award for Best Actor under 10 in a motion picture. In 1993, Joe had a lead role in the TV movie "Gregory K"(Switching Parents), as an abused boy who wants to divorce his parents. In 1994, Joe starred in the film "Holy Matrimony", as a young Hutterite boy who has to marry his much older, late brother's wife. He then was cast in the Disney film "Angels in the Outfield". Joe then broke out into stardom when he was cast as Tommy Soloman in the television series "3rd Rock from the Sun". The show was about aliens, posing as human beings here on earth. Joe resented the fact that he was featured in teen magazines, and was being seen as crushworthy object. The show ran for 5 seasons, and Joe was nominated for Screen Actor Guild Awards, Young Artist Awards and Teen Choice Awards. During his run on the show, Joe appeared in the films "The Juror", "Sweet Jane" and a small role in "Halloween H20". But his role in the 1999 film "10 things I hate about You", is one of his most notable, recognized films. He played Cameron, the new kid vying for Bianca's attention and heart. The film also starred Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles and Larisa Oleynik. After "3rd Rock from the Sun" ended, Joe quit acting for 2 years to attend Columbia University. During his stay, he studied history, literature and French. Joe dropped out of University in 2004 to concentrate on acting again. Joe's return to acting saw him in a number of indie roles. In 2001, he appeared in "Maniac" where he played a young man sent to a mental instituition. In 2004's "Mysterious Skin" he played a gay hustler who is haunted by his sexually abused past. He was nominated for a Gotham Award. In 2005's "Brick" he played a teen who becomes involved in an underground drug ring while investigating a murder. His next role was a bank heist drama "The Lookout". Joe also was in the Iraq war film "Stop-loss" and "G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra", where he played the main villain. Recently he appeared as Tom Hansen in "500 Days of Summer" opposite Zooey Deschanel. The role, won him his first ever Golden Globe nomination and Independent Spirit Award nomination. Next up for Joe is "Uncertainty", "Hesher" and the Christopher Nolan directed film "Inception". Joe has his own website hitrecord.com, where users can make short films. Joe has descibed he website as "an alternative outlet of where he gets to be a little less professional and just freak out a little bit." Joe has been romantically linked to Julia Stiles and Meagan Good in the past. He is good friends with actress Michelle Trachtenberg. In his free time, Joe enjoys playing guitar.
