Lanky and likable, Ford soon became a favorite leading man of such female stars... read more as Marguerite Clark, Gloria Swanson, Marion Davies, Clara Bow, Louise Brooks, and the Talmadge sisters. Just why he was a favorite is something of a mystery, since physical strength and virility were not among Ford's strong suits. Historian William K. Everson has suggested that Ford's comparative wimpishness was utilized to make his formidable leading ladies seem stronger and more in charge of the proceedings.
