| Emmanuelle Grey "Emmy" Rossum was born September 12, 1986 in New York City to a Jewish American family. Her father is a banker and her mother is a corporate photographer. Her parents divorced when she was three years old and Rossum has not remained close to her father. At age seven, she joined the Metropolitan Opera Children's Chorus. Rossum was enrolled at the prestigious all-girl Spence School in Manhattan until administrators upset with her frequent absences delivered an ultimatum - forego all career opportunities in order to concentrate on schoolwork, or withdraw. She opted for the latter, and graduated from high school after completing "virtual classes" sponsored online by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She left the school to pursue an acting career. She started an acting career by appearing in television shows such as "Law and Order" and "As the World Turns". In 1999, she starred in her first TV movie "Genius", which earned her a Young Artist Awards nomination. She made her big screen debut in the film "Songcatcher". She received an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Debut Performance for her role in that movie. Emmy began building up a notable film career, by appearing in the 2003 film "Nola" in which she played an aspiring songwriter and in Clint Eastwood's "Mystic River", where she played Sean Penn's daughter. Her breakthrough role came in the blockbuster hit "The Day after Tomorrow". Her biggest role to date came in the role of Christine Daae in the film "The Phantom of the Opera", the screen adaptation of the long-running stage musical. For her portrayal she won numerous awards, including a Saturn Award for Best Performance by a Younger Actor, a Broadcast Film Critics Association award for Best Young Actress, a National Board of Review Award for Best Breakthrough Performance, a Young Artist Award and a Golden Globe nomination. In 2006, Emmy starred in another high budget disaster flick "Poseidon". Emmy disappeared from the film world for awhile to pursue a singing career. Emmy's debut album "Inside Out" was released on October 23, 2007. Emmy said of the album, "It's pop music, but not Britney Spears bubblegum pop. I want it to have a David Gray or Annie Lennox feel. I've been spending up to 12 hours a day in the studio". As of summer 2008, Emmy has been recording a new album. Emmy returned back to film by appearing the film "Dragonball Evolution" and the indie film "Dare".
Emmy has lived a considerably quiet life. Emmy was married to Jason Siegel for a year and half before thei divorce in 2009. Amazingly no one knew she was married until the divorce became public. "I'm heavy on preparation... some actors come to the set and don't know what scene they're playing, but that would make me crazy.
