One of them, Moyra, worked with him as an Art Director in Hewlett's internet company Darkyl New Media. flixster.actor.pane.162688817 - flixster It was in high school at Toronto's St. George's College Choir School for Boys that David first appeared in 8mm and 16mm student films by classmate Vincenzo Natali, the future writer-director of Cube, Cypher, Nothing, and Splice. David has appeared in all four of those films while Andrew Miller appeared in Cube and Nothing.

David dropped out of school his senior year in order to pursue both computer and acting careers starting in the late 1980s when he appeared in low-budget horror films like The Darkside and Pin and guested on TV shows such as My Secret Identity and Friday the 13th. Throughout this he also earned a living as in-house computer expert at the messaging network Voice-Tel Canada.

In 1996, after a series of Canadian movies such as Scanners 2: The New Order and Desire and Hell at Sunset Motel and an recurring television role in
Kung Fu: The Legend Continues David landed his next high profile role, as computer whiz Grant Jansky on the hit Canadian series Traders. This earned him two Gemini Award nominations, which was later followed by a Golden Sheaf award for the short film Elevated where he played a security guard convinced he is under attack by marauding aliens.

David moved to Los Angeles and earned a high-profile role in an episode of ER, but ironically made more of a mark back in
Canada — appearing in three episodes of the Vancouver-shot Stargate SG-1 as astrophysicist Dr. Rodney McKay, now of the Stargate Atlantis team.

Before joining Atlantis in 2004, David starred in Canadian movies Nothing, Foolproof and Ice Men; guest starred on TV shows Without A Trace and The District and headlined SciFi Channel movies Boa Vs Python and Darklight.

David has recently branched out into directing with his feature film debut A Dogs Breakfast which has garnered rave reviews and has been picked up by MGM Studios. They have also commissioned a television series based on A Dogs Breakfast's spoof science fiction show, 'Starcrossed' which David will write.

He has recently appeared with Stargate: Atlantis costar David Nykl in Helen. His next film Splice will be out sometime towards the end of 2009.
