At the age of three she moved to Germany where her father got a job managing a hotel. Growing up there, Carey has stated that she was quite shy growing up and was very much a tomboy until the age of 15. Carey caught the acting bug after watching a performance of her brother Owain in a school production of "The King and I". She took part in a school production of "Sweet Charity" in her final year. She was also a student head of drama. Carey applied to three different drama schools but was rejected on every one. She has said that those negative experiences just fueled her passion to act even more.


In 2004, Carey got the role of Kitty Bennent in the 2005 adaptation of Jane Austen's novel, "Pride and Prejudice". The film also starred the likes of Keira Knightley, Donald Sutherland, Rosamund Pike and Jenna Malone to name a few. That same year, Carey had a recurring role on the BBC adaptation flixster.actor.pane.770678627 - flixster"Bleak House". Her other television credits include "The Amazing Mrs. Pritchard" and tv movie "Northanger Abbey" for Granada Television, and played Daniel Radcliffe's brother in "My Boy Jack". In 2007, Carey appeared in the film "And when did you last see your father?" based on the memoir by Blake Morrison. Derek Elley, of Variety, described Mulligan's performance in And When Did You Last See Your Father? as being "strong" and praised her for being "elusive".


In 2009, her most notable role of both the year and her career was, An Education in which she played the lead role of Jenny. Carey said about her role "There were older men who used to come in. Peter Travers, of Rolling Stone described her as having a "sensational, starmaking performance", while Claudia Puig, of USA Today felt that Mulligan had one of "the year's best" performances. The role has earned a Golden Globe nomination, a BAFTA nomination, Screen Actors Guild nomination, a Critic's Choice Award nomination, A British Independent Film Awards nomination, a National Board of Review nomination and wait for it...an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. Carey has also be nominated for the Rising Star Award at the BAFTA Awards.


Her other movie credits include Public Enemies opposite Johnny Depp, Jim Sheridan's Brothers, The Greatest co-starring Susan Sarandon and Pierce Brosnan and Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps with Michael Douglas and Shia LaBeouf.


Shia has been dating her Wall Street 2 : Money Never Sleeps co-star Shia LaBeouf since filming began of August 2009. Carey has also stated that she is thinking about applying to Juillaird. She has also said that she would like to do a play every year.
