Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Murphy's parents divorced when she was two. She was raised by her mother Sharon in Edison, New Jersey, and later Los Angeles. She was raised a Baptist and attended a Lutheran school, but is now a non-denominational practicing Christian.
When she was nine years old, Murphy landed a singing role in a musical version of Les Misérables, and had signed on with a manager by the time she turned thirteen. Her mother, Sharon was diagnosed with breast cancer when Murphy was 15. She survived after having a double mastectomy.
Brittany first came to fame when she played the role of Tai in the film "Clueless". Some of her other notable roles in film include, "Girl, Interrupted", "Don't say a word", "Just Married", "Uptown Girls", "8 Mile", "Little Black Book", "Happy Feet" and "Sin City". Brittany was a spokesperson and model for Jordache jeans. She also had a band in the early 90s with EricBalfour. She sang again in the film "Happy Feet". The songs were Somebody to Love by Queen and Boogie Wonderland by Earth, Wind and Fire.
In May 2007, Brittany married Simon Monjack at a private ceremony in Los Angeles. The two plus Brittany's mom lived together for three years.
Sadly on December 20, 2009 Brittany was pronounced dead. The county coroner has stated that the primary cause of death was pneumonia, anemia and multiple drug intoxication. The drugs are said to prescriptions. She was laid to rest on December 24, 2009. Upon Further investigation the medical examiner's final word on cause of death was Pneumonia and found NO evidence of drug abuse.
