Brian had been struggling with a heart murmur since he was born, almost dying at the age of four from a bacterial infection.
Brian underwent an open-heart surgery in 1998 which he had posponed twice in the past, at the urgency of his then girlfriend, Leighanne.
Kevin Richardson and Brian Littrell are maternal first cousins.
Howie Dorough's sister died of lupus in 1998.
The remaining band memebers have not ruled out a possible return of Kevin Richardson.
