| AMANDA TAPPING'S BIOGRAPHY |
Very early on she excelled in math, but when she found herself in high school, she took great interest in the arts. She attended North Toronto High, and was there awarded both the Dramatic Arts Award and Environmental Science Award. Amanda studied drama at the University of Windsor School of Dramatic Arts in Windsor, Ontario. After graduation, she spent four more years studying theater and appearing in several stage productions. She recalls how she once vowed that she would never do television. However, a short time later she secured an agent and got her first commercial for Tim Horton's. A couple more commercials followed that helped finance Random Acts, an improvisational comedy troupe that she formed in the early 90s. The troup performed sketch comedies at venues in Toronto and the surrounding around, including at The New Ideas Festival and Tarragon Spring Arts Fair. Amanda started appearing in television movies and series, mostly small episodic parts. She appeared in such television series as Due South and The X-Files. However, her real success came in 1997 when she was offered the role of Captain Samantha Carter on the sci-fi series Stargate SG-1, where she starred for 10 years; not including two direct-to-DVD movies that were released in March and July of 2008, and season 4 of Stargate Atlantis, where her character was transfered after the cancelation of Stargate SG-1. Amanda can now be seen starring on the sci-fi series Sanctuary where she is an executive producer. The series began as a webseries in 2007, and released eight 15 minute episodes before taking a break to make the transition to television. It premiere in October of 2008 and has now completed its second season. Amanda has two living brothers, Richard and Christopher. Her brother, Steven, died in December of 2006 from complications involved with his epilepsy. On September 23, 1994, Amanda married Alan Kovacs. She gave birth to her daughter, Olivia B. Kovacs on March 22, 2005. |
